Shark or Miele vacuum? I can't decide

Our Dyson of 11 years has died (finally) and I have £250 to spend on a new vacuum. I've narrowed it down to a shark lift away or a miele (not sure which model). Three kids and a dog to contend with and both hard and carpeted floors. Help!

I have a Shark though not your model, but this comment may still apply. It came with two attachments, (a long nozzle and something I've never used). The problem is these two attachments can't be housed on the main machine itself.

I hang them in a bag in my hall cupboard although the truth is I spend a lot of time hunting round the house looking for the nozzle because I've taken it off mid clean and put it down somewhere. For me it's an irritating design fault.

Miele definitely. Very powerful yet small and sleek.

thatonesmine · 24/10/2020 13:03

My Miele is 20+ years old and has survived two floods, just saying.

I have an elderly Miele Cat & Dog C3 which copes with anything and everything and is still going strong.

iamme21 · 24/10/2020 13:19

I’ve had both, couldn’t be going with the bags for the meile. Love my shark lift away, would highly recommend

opinionatedfreak · 24/10/2020 13:43

No experience of Shark.

On my third Miele. 1 & 2 are still working they just got pinched by other family members....

When I had to buy a new vacuum for an elderly relative I only looked at miele!

I've got the basic model with onboard tool storage (I think that is very important - no.2 miele had a clip on tool caddy and it was a pain in the effing arse). I've got a mix of hard floors and carpet - the standard floor brush flips between the two quickly and easily. I do have a dedicated hard floor brush & turbo brush but tend not to use them so I don't think they are worth paying extra for.

opinionatedfreak · 24/10/2020 13:46

C2 complete.

Thewithesarehere · 24/10/2020 13:47

Do not buy Shark. I spent £200 to buy a machine that lasted three months. Very fucked off with them.

HoldMyLobster · 24/10/2020 13:52

I've had my Miele 10 years and going strong. 2 cats and a dog. Big house.

I am thinking about a Dyson V11 just to have something cord free, but the price is yikes.

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 24/10/2020 13:58

Really disappointed with the shark, I finally upgraded from my old Henry hoover and have decided to still keep both as shark is so useless!!

Clearthinking · 24/10/2020 14:15

Sorry to suggest another brand but I'm in same situation, dog, small people, hairy husband, for £220 you can get vax one pwr blade 4, only reason I'm saying is it's won a few awards this year and it handles brilliantly. I don't work for them xx

Branleuse · 24/10/2020 14:23

I really hate my shark. I got it after reading reviews and researching for ages and I dont think they deserve the hype at all. They lose suction quickly. I do have pets and messy kids though, but this was supposed to be for pets. Maybe it meant goldfish>

PrayingandHoping · 24/10/2020 14:24

I bought a Shark Cordless after having a Miele. The amount of dirt that it got out of my carpets was shocking!

So def Shark. Much better vacuum

PrayingandHoping · 24/10/2020 14:25

I have 2 large dogs

MrsR87 · 24/10/2020 14:27

No experience of Shark but would highly recommend Miele.

We have two cats and had the Dyson animal for years but the Miele does a far superior job! I also find their customer service to be excellent. We started with their vacuum and now also have a washer, a dryer, a coffee machine and fridge freezer from them!

MrsR87 · 24/10/2020 14:29

Just to add...we did invest in the different heads. So we have one for hrs floors, one that’s better on soft floors and one that works wonders on hair and pet fur!

Indecisivelurcher · 24/10/2020 14:29

Well this thread is no help 😆

DeadHeadedDaisy · 24/10/2020 14:32

I'm definitely over thinking it, but I really don't want to make the wrong decision and be stuck with another crap lump of plastic for the next ten years Sad
Miele seems to be the more popular brand - any particular model recommended?
Then again MN seems to love shark in historic posts

Get an extra large shark if that's the way you go. If I've not hoovered all week, we can fill the shark dust container downstairs (4 bed new-build not a mansion!).
Not sure about the meile, but very impressed with shark liftaway pet version after the Dyson died.

Haggisfish · 24/10/2020 14:35

I’ve had both and they are much of a Much Ness tbh. I prefer bagless shark but it’s heavier than Miele.

MrsR87 · 24/10/2020 14:36

We have this

www.miele.co.uk/e/bagless-cylinder-vacuum-cleaners-blizzard-cx1-comfort-powerline-skmf3-10661280-p?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7Y7jgazN7AIVirHtCh3X-Q_0EAAYASAAEgKg6fD_BwE

We bought the cat and dog fur head to go with it. But you can also just get the cat and dog model of the same one.

Ellapaella · 24/10/2020 14:36

I have the Miele pet one - it's no better than any bog standard hoover. Don't waste your money on it.

NewYearNewTwatName · 24/10/2020 14:39

Never had miele.

But bought a shark lift away pet anti hair blah blah recently, my review is on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4059157-Things-MN-have-recommended-on-threads-that-you-bought-but-turned-out-to-be-crap

in short don't bother, and I'm not alone.

QueenofLouisiana · 24/10/2020 14:41

My shark regularly gets jammed up with fluff- both in the bin bit and the tube. Another MNer said exactly the same in another thread, so it isn’t just mine! Not great with my long hair, despite the comb things.
Does clean well though.

Ernieshere · 24/10/2020 14:45

I love my Shark Liftaway,

I clean/rinse the filters every few months & have bought a new foam bit for inside, for around £4 on Amazon, it works like it did the day I bought it, and that was probably 4 years ago.

I hoover nearly every day, no shoes on inside, 1 adult, 1 child & 1 cat and it's about 1/4 full each time.
