I wish I could say I am shocked. But unfortunately this is the government we have, and it is expected that they will always do the cruel/stupid [insert unpleasant adjective here] thing.

if anyone needs evidence that they tories put party loyalty above basic humanity, this is it.

unfortunately, Boris has such a big majority that it is very hard for Labour to stop him at the moment.

But Rashford's petition also has lots of signatures which will force the government to confront this again. Do keep signing to keep the pressure up

Signed, thank you

PerseverancePays · 21/10/2020 22:46

@user116439526896

These are the people who voted to deliberately impoverish disabled people. Who deliberately discriminated against people with mental health disabilities trying to claim disability benefits until the courts forced a stop to the most blatant instances of it.

This is the outcome I expected. Sadly.

We are a horrible society.

They also vetoed that rentals should be fit for human habitation.

exactly @Lollyneenah They don't want to sort out this mess.

No government of any party is going to vote in favour of a bill proposed by the opposition. That's basic politics. Labour only put it forward so the Tories would reject it and so provoke the response in the OP's post. It's all political tactics. The children are just pawns in the game.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/10/2020 01:08

Why shouldn’t the Tories vote for this just because it’s proposed by the opposition? Party politics above decency. Shame on them and those who vote them.

IronLawOfGeometricProgression · 22/10/2020 01:47

The Children's Minister voted against feeding hungry children. This is becoming fucking Dickensian.

What next? Workhouses? Is that what they mean by "Nationalising children"?

ilovesooty · 22/10/2020 02:04

Apparently 5 Tory MPs voted against the government. It will be interesting to see who they are.

ilovesooty · 22/10/2020 02:08

Here they are

With the Tories and their voters if you are poor its only "we are all in it together" when it comes to face masks and social distancing. The rest of the time you can do one.

Its all " we are living in unprecedented times. We are in a pandemic" when making new draconian laws. Yet when it comes to actually doing something practical its like said pandemic doesnt exist.

Furries · 22/10/2020 02:55

I’ve sent them a message with my views. Won’t do anything to change it, but got my message across which helps my frustration for tonight.

Tomorrow, I will try to find a way to at least engage with my local community to see how we can help in our area.

Probably the saddest I’ve felt since the start of Covid, and I’m not a mum.

Can we just have a Ctrl/Alt/Delete reset for 2020 please!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 22/10/2020 03:06

And still people vote for these bastards.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2020 03:17

There's no money to feed hungry kids ... ?

HS2 will cost £100 million per week for the next 20 years, so 100 billion

Track & Waste already cost 12 billion, run by Dido, Tory Queen of Carnage

Fuck knows how much Brexit will cost, but estimates start at 100 billion

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/10/2020 03:28

That's the Tories for you, though. A lot more compassion they'd almost be narcissists!!!
Also on another note what bloody state was Boris in with that blue suit covered in bloody dog hairs.. He looked like hed just rolled out of bed pissed.
I don't mean to sound shallow but this is the bloke who's allegedly running the Country. He doesn't look like he can run a bath to be perfectly honest

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/10/2020 03:33

It's almost like they want to lose the next Election.
That'll never happen though. If I had a million pounds I'd confidently stake it that the Tories will be voted back in. They cant seem to do no wrong in the British Publics eyes. The next Election is what just under 5 years away.
Covid will be long gone forgiven and forgotten by then.

longwayoff · 22/10/2020 06:05

Well, they're Tories, of course they've voted against it. It's time those lazy children earned their daily bread. Are there no chimneys? How about a paper round? And people keep voing for them. Defies belief.

Sittinbythesea · 22/10/2020 06:42

I don’t think it’s that simple.
How do we decide which children get free meals - fsm only? That’s pretty tough on those just above that level.
How do we decide when it stops?
How do we ensure that people don’t become long-term reliant on it? It’s not ‘wrong’ or ‘immoral’ to think that people should think carefully before having children - we see loads of threads on here with people weighing up the pros on cons of having a child (or another one) can they afford it is normally key.
Politics - Labour is playing politics with this, they knew that this wouldn’t get voted for, if it was really what they wanted they would have been pushing for it behind the scenes rather than tabling a vote, that the government would then be seen to lose if it went through. It’s point scoring using children.
There are better solutions - a temporary rise in child benefit, for example.

Graciebobcat · 22/10/2020 06:48

People are going to be long term reliant on government help for a long time anyway after Covid and then Brexit. Perhaps they would have the money if they hadn't wasted £12,000,000,000 on a track and trace system that doesn't work.

Sittinbythesea · 22/10/2020 06:57

Of course Gracie. But normally benefits aren’t earmarked for a particular purpose. The recipient is generally trusted to receive the benefits and spend as needed. That’s way it looks like labour is playing politics, rather than arguing for an increase in benefits they are arguing for the emotional, celebrity band wagon response, rather than the best thought through solution. They are more interested in party politics than finding workable solutions. It’s worked a treat too, judging by the responses on here!

Doobydoo · 22/10/2020 06:58

They despise the 'plebs' and rightly so.....that is who voted them in ( disclaimer..not my view just how I imagine they think!) They can do what they like. They are doing what they like.

NotFrozen · 22/10/2020 07:02

@Sittinbythesea I agree with you but I don’t think there will be much rational engagement on this thread.

I reject this cynical excuse. This is a basic issue about feeding hungry people, the opposition shouldn't need to propose this.

The government have been despicable on this issue.

nosswith · 22/10/2020 07:17

Any who had voted against the government's wishes would have had the whip withdrawn and been deselected, in other words in effect threatened with job loss in 2024.

Look what happened to Rory Stewart and Philip Hammond last year.

Pixxie7 · 22/10/2020 07:21

I think the government is beginning to realise the amount this is actually going to cost and are trying to cut back where they can, and why they have to start with deprived chiLoren says it all.
