I am interested - are you able to get an appointment for an NHS dental check up? We can't even make an appointment unless its an emergency

I've just been able to sign up to a new dentist as an NHS patient for DH and I. The appointment is booked for December but going by other people's experiences I've read on here lately I'm expecting the worse and it'll be cancelled. We both really need to have work done too.

ExclamationPerfume · 20/10/2020 13:00

My husband's dentists are working as normal. My own dentist isn't seeing anyone but emergencies until next year at the earliest.

SoddingWeddings · 20/10/2020 13:03

No. There's also a 6yr waiting list to get on the books at an NHS dentist across the Devon or Cornwall.

My NHS dentist are not seeing anyone until January at the earliest - they emailed us all last week to tell us they'll do telephone consultations from then.

Their private clinic (same practice, same dentists, same staff, same rooms) is, however, open for business.

I'm furious.

No only private work unfortunately. According to the dental receptionist It’s nhs guidance rather than them making the choice not to see people.

doctorhamster · 20/10/2020 13:17

No. We've been given appointments for next July. By that point it'll be over 18 months since me and the dc had check ups. I think it's disgraceful.

Pringlemonster · 20/10/2020 13:18

NHS dentist we see
No check ups ,no work done ,just pulling teeth out is all they are doing ,that and xrays

Iftheclouds · 20/10/2020 13:20

They are providing hygienist appointments for nhs patients if they pay but other than that nothing.

WhispersOfWickedness · 20/10/2020 13:20

As far as I know they are, I booked an appointment for January a couple of months ago...
Outrageous about the ones doing private work but not NHS 😡

Pringlemonster · 20/10/2020 13:21

It is disgrace when every one else is having to go back to normal work ,but not nhs dentist

Pringlemonster · 20/10/2020 13:22

Dare not complain,or we might get struck of

JMG1234 · 20/10/2020 13:23

My kids had check ups with their NHS dentist over the summer holidays. My dentist is working pretty much as normal, but he's private.

LittleMissLockdown · 20/10/2020 13:25

Nope nothing here unless you're an emergency.

I'm slowly watching the time tick by off my maternity exemption and also slowly watching as my gums get more sore and bleed more regularly but I'm not an emergency ora private patient so I don't matter. Sad

Nothingoriginalhere · 20/10/2020 13:26

Wouldnt know - havent been able to have an nhs dentist for at least 10 years!! Even for my children...
Thankfully my very lovely private dentist is open although reduced contact, dry cleaning ( no water spray) and only checkup s
any other work is off at present - He doesnt see nhs patients at all unless for otheodontic work.
However it does come at a premium of £50 per child per check up, and £42 per month for dh and I

Whiskyinajar · 20/10/2020 13:28

Saw my dentist last week with toothache.

He is seeing emergency patients only as once the room has been used the advice is not to use it for an hour afterwards due to risk of airborne virus.

Nightmare.

sar302 · 20/10/2020 13:39

Fine here although my son is the only one we could get nhs registered previously. We've just booked and had to wait for a December appointment. I decided to stay bugger it and sign up privately and funnily enough I'm being seen in just two weeks. But we're in a tier 1 area, don't know if that's making a difference.

Mylittlesandwich · 20/10/2020 13:48

My dentist isn't doing check ups as such but if you have a dental problem they'll see you. They're very kindly seeing DS as his first teeth are coming through and I don't want him to find the dentist scary if I leave it too long.

mumwon · 20/10/2020 13:50

we are in tier 1 too no appointments unless emergency
Can't help but wonder about this re private seems from comments this maybe the case - point is they receive payment for NHS for having people -
My dd (adult) daughter had just had check up as has her husband they live in tier 2 & dentist in tier 1 (NHS not private)
Go figure

OP posts:
toptreeroots1 · 20/10/2020 14:18

I can't even register with a nhs dentist... Bloody annoying. They will take me own if I can go private which isn't a option for me

munchbunch12 · 20/10/2020 14:57

Nope, we are in tier 2 (West Mids) and when our NHS dentist cancelled our September check ups they said they might start doing them again in the New Years.

DMIL and DFIL have both had their check ups at their usual private dentist.

mumwon · 21/10/2020 11:39

I contacted our local Healthwatch (I assume other areas have this) by messenger on their Facebook page
They are very interested & are in discussion with the local health leaders as to whether the dentist are keeping to their paid for contract with NHS & it looks like the local leaders will be contacting dental surgeries to check whether they are obeying rules
First, anyone in pain/need emergency treatment whether they are a patient or not (!) they have to treat. Second they will be checking about their treatment of private patients & excluding NHS
They were concerned about people not be able to get on NHS dental surgery as patients

Mine are doing standard check ups from February however they are still taking appointments if you are in pain, need urgent work etc.

I've just had two fillings done last week which were identified back in January when I was pregnant. I have booked a review appointment in January 21 to look at the other temp filling I had back in Jan this year as it should really be changed for a perm.

EBearhug · 21/10/2020 11:57

Ours are doing emergency treatments but not routine check-ups. I ring them every couple of months to check. Their website is useless.

Quirrelsotherface · 21/10/2020 12:33

Got fed up waiting for mine to return so went private. It costs, obviously but they've been brilliant.

badlydrawnbear · 21/10/2020 12:51

No, I managed to get an emergency appointment in September but no idea when check-ups might restart for me or DC.

DelurkingAJ · 21/10/2020 12:58

They’re seeing DC (NHS patients) for checkups. No adults at the moment.
