I am interested - are you able to get an appointment for an NHS dental check up? We can't even make an appointment unless its an emergency

I've just had a 6-monthly check up with my NHS dentist. It had been postponed twice but has now happened - no hygienist or polish though.

Angel2702 · 21/10/2020 13:28

Nope I have a temporary filling from before lockdown and a cap that has cracked and they aren’t seeing anyone without facial swelling or extreme pain.

Nope - I'm NHS and they've said they'll let us know when check-ups start again, but no hint of when that might be.

Bit different but my private orthodontist asked me in for a check up, bear in mind I’ve had my braces off for over a year so hardly essential! I think if it’s private you have a good chance of getting one however not on NHS atm

this is the answer I got from Healthwatch
Here at Healthwatch, we have started to hear daily from people trying to find treatment, or even just to register with a local dentist, without success. We are currently raising these with local health leaders and are working to ensure that these concerns (held by yourself and others across xxxx) are represented in discussions about resolving issues around dental care access.
Local leaders have very recently agreed to contact dentists about their contractual requirements and the proportion of appointments being provided to NHS versus private-paying patients. It is our priority to continue focusing on this issue and improve this unacceptable situation too many people are finding themselves in.
It should also be noted that all dental practices that see NHS patients follow contractual guidelines - any patient who is in pain should be seen (even if they are not regular attendees at a practice).
If you would like to feedback about your dentist, you could leave a review via our Feedback Centre: healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk/services
If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to help.

Our dentist rang last week wanting to speak to my stepson and when my husband happened to mention that we wondered when check ups are starting she said it would be late next year. She just assumed we were NHS when in fact we pay Denplan. My DH then decided today to ring back as when we thought about it we've paid a lot of money for a service not being provided. The receptionist , on finding out we paid Denplan, offered us check ups this week!! This is really wrong that NHS patients may need to wait a year.

mumwon · 21/10/2020 19:24

@Twigletgirl27 I think is exactly what is happening - & they are taking advantage - as per the message I received above
My dentist (receptionist!) conversation went like this.
Me, having rung up once a month per their instructions to check " Hi my daughter lives in another area/county & has just had her check up this week - have you got any further update when I might be able to make an appointment please?"
Receptionist " Was she private?" (why assume this!!! unless this is how they are operating)
Me " No she was NHS"...
Receptionist " we don't have any appointments at the moment for check ups ring in about 6 weeks"
That's when my antennas went up & as people was note the comment by the organisation about people got being able to get NHS Dentist places either -they are paid to have us on their books

Private dentist and we had check ups this week and have hygienist appointments for next month.

Notverygrownup · 21/10/2020 19:29

That's awful! Both of my lads saw their NHS dentist today. Normal checkup, one of them booked in for a follow up filling next week - Tier Medium, south of England - so it is possible.

Scarby9 · 21/10/2020 19:34

Nope.
They are doing check ups and hygienist appointments for private patients, however.

PlateTectonics · 21/10/2020 19:44

I had a routine NHS dentist appointment back in Aug and so did my DC.
