Mid week shop for fresh veg and fruit?

RednaxelasLunch · 17/10/2020 15:37

I get a weekly Tesco delivery. By mid week the fresh veg and fruit has either gone off or run out. I'm sick of frozen peas or soggy bananas.

What is everyone doing to get that fresh stuff mid week?

We go to our local farm shop to buy fruit veg and meat and a nice loaf, and then do rest of the shop at Morrison's.
We found supermarket veg to go off so quick!
Could you do that? We find it a touch more expensive but we can walk to the shop and it's nice to support local! Appreciate that we are fortunate to not have to go for the cheapest option, however we find it lasts longer and tastes better

EatPrayYoga · 17/10/2020 15:43

I find once a week is enough and most things last.

Carrots, broccoli and cauliflower as well as ginger and garlic last well in the fridge. Onions and potatoes easily last over a week anyway.

Rocket and bagged salad last well and do well with some kitchen roll in but otherwise spring onions and salad last long enough

Som things might deteriorate on day 5-6 but you should be able to should plan your menu around this as you probably don't have salad every day

AriettyHomily · 17/10/2020 15:44

Mine lasts fine for the week

swashbucklecheer · 17/10/2020 15:47

The advantage of being able to pick your own freshest veg when actually at tesco yourself! Having watched the pickers lift the top packet when the date is that day, I always go rummaging in the crates below for the fresher stuff. One shop does us the week.

WankPuffins · 17/10/2020 15:50

I go to the market a couple of times a week. Luckily there is a great one in my town with cheap fruit and veg.

(I’m a total convert to the market now, went to tesco yesterday and thought I’d get veg there - I’m fucked if I’m paying £1.90 for a single cauliflower when they are 80p at the market!)

Floralnomad · 17/10/2020 15:50

I have a weekly Tesco delivery and find that veg is fine if kept in the fridge , I only order grapefruits , oranges , satsumas on the fruit as I go to a farm shop for everything else as I don’t trust people to pick what I want .

BillysMyBunny · 17/10/2020 15:54

Surely what to do if you need to top up on your shopping mid-week is fairly straightforward - go to a shop mid-week. Not really sure what you’re asking here?

Crazyhorses123 · 17/10/2020 15:55

I have a tesco delivery for the week, wrapped broccoli always starts fresh the week, roasted veg are good for day 6, cabbages last well, really is not a problem.
Is your fridge cold enough?

LittleBearPad · 17/10/2020 15:56

Fresh fruit and veg should easily last a week.

If you run out order more or go to a shop

Voyager54 · 17/10/2020 16:01

I understand the issue we tend to purchase swede, celery, cauliflower, carrots and they seem to last 7 days without any issues.

As far as fruit is concerned tend to buy 2 packets of oranges etc and seem to manage. There are 3 adults in our household and we used to shop with Tesco and now use Waitrose as the quality of fresh products in our area is very good

vanillandhoney · 17/10/2020 16:08

Mine lasts a week no problem.

Or you could split your online shop in half and just get two deliveries.

RaininSummer · 17/10/2020 16:15

I don't seem to have a need to do a shop for more fruit or veg in between normally unless I decide to make something I hadn't planned for. I do try to use up the more perishable stuff earliest though as spinach and mushrooms aren't keen on hanging around that long.

RoseMartha · 17/10/2020 16:18

Mine lasts a week too

Sometimes if I want it to last I add something in notes to say please can I have the longest date.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 17/10/2020 16:31

Mine lasts the week. The softer fruit like berries and grapes tend to get eaten first and then the apples and oranges towards the end of the week. Pears often take about a week to ripen anyway!
Veg is similar- fresh salad and spinach soon after shopping, carrots/cabbage/frozen veg at the end of the week. I meal plan so can plan to use the veg that way and don't overbuy so little gets wasted

mindutopia · 17/10/2020 16:39

You just have a to plan a mix of shorter life fruit and veg with longer life ones (like cauliflower, squash, frozen peas, french beans, etc.). Or often we may pop to the local shop for a few top ups.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 17/10/2020 16:41

We run out of bread and milk too so it's usually a twice weekly shop for us.

Meepmeeep · 17/10/2020 16:42

Going to the shop as and when necessary. Is this not normal? Sometimes we need to go 3 or 4 times - it’s life.

TooMinty · 17/10/2020 16:55

You can also get a few more varieties of frozen veg to keep you going - broccoli, sweetcorn, cauliflower etc.

I find carrots keep for ages if I keep them in the fridge but not in a plastic bag. Butternut squash, turnips, swede all keep well too.

Redwolf1 · 17/10/2020 16:57

I get a tesco delivery on a Thursday and on a monday I pop to waitrose for some extra strawberries, raspberries and bread (plus a few extra treats). I usually buy meat from the butchers on a Thursday but might get extra from waitrose depending on dates and what I want

CoronaBollox · 17/10/2020 17:01

I go to the supermarket/fruit stall when needed. Once, twice ten times if need be.

Floralnomad · 17/10/2020 20:01

I assume that the OP is someone who is avoiding going in shops at the moment and that is why it’s not as simple as shop again midweek .

justchecking1 · 17/10/2020 20:07

I've got courgettes in the fridge that have been there at least a fortnight. Still fine.

Have you got the temperature on your fridge set low enough? Seems odd that things are going off after 3 or 4 days

nikkylou · 17/10/2020 20:12

Depending on your budget and how much you go through, we have occasionally gone through periods of getting a Riverford, or Abel and Cole box.

Normally comes mid-week (dependant on your day). You can chose your own selection, get a weekly box or a bit of both.

I've always found it lasts longer, and is fresher. Plus the variety has meant its nice to have different veg we wouldn't normally pick up.

We would still pick up potatoes and onions which tend to keep, and frozen veg.

Depending on your day, you could actually have salad veg at the end of the week!

Boxes come in different sizes and mixes - you can get a a fruit and veg box , or a veg box and fruit bag. Different sizes based on family size. We used to get a medium (technically 3-4 people) for just us 2, as we managed to stretch it over two weeks, providing we used it the right order.

EatPrayYoga · 18/10/2020 10:49

I have actually gone down to shop every other week and honestly we are fine. If anything we run out of things but things don't go off and we have enough veg and fruit to last us somehow. We are lucky to have v local shops where we can get milk, bread, fruit and veg if we need it but we tend not to. We use the butchers a lot though for meat and eggs and the occasional sausage roll.

Savemyusername01 · 18/10/2020 10:52

Mine definitely doesn’t last a week. Broccoli or carrots only last a couple of days and I had £2 strawberries from Tesco the other day which were soggy when I bought them.
