What gives you those ASMR chills?

I don’t know why but this clip always does.

I think it’s when Rowan Atkinson goes “oo” when he reveals the stand for the box Grin

The scene in Toy Story 2 when Woody gets cleaned and the scene in Edward Scissorhands when she gives him a makeover.

AdelaideK · 17/10/2020 14:15

Having my hair brushed. I love it.

Soubriquet · 17/10/2020 14:18

Orchestra tuning before a concert

RiseoftheSeahorse · 22/10/2020 02:25

Ha that scene does it for me too, but not because of Rowan Atkinson...

gurteee · 22/10/2020 08:41

What's AMSR?

gurteee · 22/10/2020 08:41

Or ASMR even? 🤪

amusedbush · 22/10/2020 10:43

Maybe not chills but I've taken to watching episodes of Bob Ross in bed. His soft voice and the "tsch, tsch, tsch" of the paintbrush on the canvas sends me straight off to sleep Grin

TurquoiseDragon · 22/10/2020 12:20

@gurteee

What's AMSR?
Wikipedia defines it as:

Autonomous sensory meridian response, sometimes auto sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia, it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.

For me, watching or feeling certain activities will bring on those tingles on the scalp, and I can feel almost in a trance. Examples are watching videos of facials or massages onm Youtube, although I get a bigger response when I'm actually having these treatments.

Typically, voices are soft, or there are no voices, just the background sounds.

DadDadDad · 22/10/2020 12:25

@gurteee - I would add to the definition quoted above that not everyone seems to experience it.

On the other hand, when I first came across the concept (10 years ago), that was an epiphany for me because it's something I've had since childhood and never even knew if it was something common to everyone, because I never spoke to anyone about it.

gurteee · 22/10/2020 12:28

Thanks for the definitions guys is that the same as getting goosebumps when you hear a song?

ZombieOtter · 22/10/2020 12:37

I get it from tactile sensations such as stroking certain fabrics with my finger, or using the fabric to stroke my face. It works both ways though - there are certain fabrics that make me feel physically sick with revulsion!

EatPrayYoga · 22/10/2020 12:39

Cleaner cleaning the office around me at work! Hasn't happened for a while but that springs to mind

SoupDragon · 22/10/2020 12:42

There were two men at work who had voices at exactly the right level of deepness to do this to me.

Hair brushing is another - when DD was small I used to encourage her to do my hair 😂

Zaphodsotherhead · 22/10/2020 12:59

Hair brushing or massages (or watching videos of either). Oddly enough, when I've been shopping and look at the full fridge and cupboards I get the shiverychills then too!

Does or did anyone who gets the ASMR thing also have synaesthesia? I had it very strongly as a child and still have it to a degree, and think the two things are linked.

I don't think it is.

I can get it when I observe another person closely concentrating on a task, especially if speaking in a gentle, even whispery voice. It's almost a soporific effect (some use ASMR to help them sleep), a warmth over the scalp that is very relaxing. (And not at all sexual in my mind, although I know some make that connection).

TurquoiseDragon · 22/10/2020 13:08

Was the case for my late mum. She had synaesthesia linking taste and colours.

I think I may have it where i think I hear a sound when watching certain soundless things, but I'm partly deaf which may complicate things.

Ugh yes. I can’t stand the feeling of..crap can’t remember the name! It’s used a lot now for tea towels(not the normal tea towel fabric) and I have the feeling of it. Literally sends shivers down my spine.

Whenever I used to dig around to get a toy out of a box of cereal I used to get that feeling and never understood what it was!!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 22/10/2020 13:32

I get what I used to call "that tickly feeling" when someone brushes or plays with my hair or when they stroke my back. I also get it if someone is drawing me. It relaxes me and almost sends me to sleep. I keep trying to get it from YouTube vids but they just do my head in, especially the whispering or where they fiddle with the brush bristles etc before using it.

Gettingonwithlife · 22/10/2020 13:35

The repair shop. Total relaxation if the house was on fire I wouldn’t move🤪

BorderlineHappy · 22/10/2020 14:03

Ah i love the eating videos,Muckbang i think its called.

Hair brushing,tapping,massage.

Iused to bribe my kids years ago to brush my hair,it was bliss.

Zaphodsotherhead · 22/10/2020 14:54

It's all so closely linked in my head that I've now only got to read the letters ASMR and I have the head tingles!

I had one of those head massager thingies that look like a metal spider. Would give me the tingles to start with, but it wore off really fast! Nobody to massage me or rub my head here, so I have to watch videos now. It's not as good!

AlexCabot · 22/10/2020 15:00

Anything involving my head! Having my hair brushed or played with, doctor looking in my ears and that bit at the opticians when they get really close up to look in my eyes!

Also, that proper baritone voice that some men have. I used to work with a guy with it, so relaxing but I never ended up paying any attention to what he was saying.
