How often do you replace your phone?

I'm getting a new phone after using an iPhone 6 for six years. People look at me as if I have two heads when I said I've had the same phone for six years. I buy mine outright as it's much cheaper than a contract.

Probably every four or five years. I also buy the phone outright and have a sim only contract.

Meruem · 17/10/2020 14:15

As infrequently as I can. I barely use my phone. I have a tablet that I use for every day stuff. I don’t really chat on the phone. It’s just a means of someone getting in touch with me in an emergency. So I don’t need all the bells and whistles of something fancy. I have a pretty basic £10 a month sim and my ex actually bought me my current phone (Samsung s6). I did have an iPhone once (again via ex!) but prefer Samsung. I won’t replace it until it stops working completely.

BearSoFair · 17/10/2020 14:22

When the old one gets too slow/laggy to keep using easily. Most recently March this year, upgraded a 2015 Samsung A3 to a SamsungA40. Buy outright then a £10 monthly bundle for texts, minutes, and data.

SimonJT · 17/10/2020 14:24

Everytime a new one comes out, but thats because my employer provides them. So my work iphone 11 will become mine to keep when work give me a new iphone 12. I then keep the newer model and sell the older one.

Qwom · 17/10/2020 14:25

Every 4-5 years

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2020 14:27

Whenever my son replaces his.

I get a 'hand me up' Grin

xyzandabc · 17/10/2020 14:27

When I break them or they get so old they stop working well. I've had 6 since 1996 so 4-6 years on average.

DramaAlpaca · 17/10/2020 14:27

Only when I have to because I've dropped it down the loo or something.

I buy outright and top up monthly because I don't want to be tied into a contract. Current one is a Samsung and I've had it a few years.

Yes hang on to it as long as I can, had this one for 4 years' and buy outright

PontiacBandit · 17/10/2020 14:30

Usually around 3yrs. I use mine all the time and the battery starts to slow and lag at the 3yr mark.

whatswithtodaytoday · 17/10/2020 14:30

When it gets too slow to use with ease, and I can afford a replacement. Or when it breaks/I drop it. I buy OnePlus phones new and have a £15 unlimited contract. I've had mine a couple of years and it's fine, hopefully won't need to replace it for another couple of years. I use my phone for everything so it works hard.

Whatatoodoodle · 17/10/2020 14:31

Only when I really have to and then after masses of angst and googling!
Went from a non smart phone to an iPhone 4 in 2011 then to to a 6 in 2015 and then to an 8 this year. Bought outright each time.
I’m too melded to Apple to swap to android

DustyMaiden · 17/10/2020 14:32

When I need to. iPhone 8 on sim only unlimited use £10 per month.

I think the problem is some people (DH) are gullible. O2 phone him and say he is due an upgrade and he says ok.

BiarritzCrackers · 17/10/2020 14:33

I just changed one that was 8 or 9 years old - iphone3. I kept meaning to upgrade but never got around to it.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/10/2020 14:35

Every 2 years.

And every time I give the old iPhone to dh and it stops working for NO reason after a further 3 months

And when I've taken both of them to the Apple store they say 'permanent software failure' Hmm

I do not think this is a coincidence

movingonup20 · 17/10/2020 14:36

When it goes caput! I buy older models to start with which doesn't help but currently it's 3 years old

Betty94 · 17/10/2020 14:37

I used to be so bad and would replace my phone every 6 months, had loads of contracts on the go Blush now I do it every 2-4 years

BackforGood · 17/10/2020 14:38

Think Im on my 4ths, so I guess every 6 years or so. 3 of them were 'hand-me-downs' though where someone else had decided to upgrade and their 'cast off' was better than my current one.

DustyMaiden · 17/10/2020 14:39

Are you bonkers? Smile

amusedbush · 17/10/2020 14:39

I have a contract so every two years. I did keep my iPhone 6S for three years (switched to sim only for the third year) but by the time I upgraded it was awful. I'd have to charge it three times a day and as I was typing out a text, I watched the battery drain by 2% every 30 seconds. I use my phone as a sat nav so if I'm doing a longer journey, I need it to hold its charge.

I got the iPhone 11 in April and the battery is great so far, hopefully I can hang on to it for a while.

6PeopleInAPubSafeHomeUnsafe · 17/10/2020 14:40

My iPhone is now 3 and still fine. I might replace the battery and keep it for another few years. It's an iPhone 8 and still plenty fast enough.

I absolutely was but in my defence I was young and had no other responsibilities- things certainly change when you have a family and a mortgage Grin

Redcrayons · 17/10/2020 14:45

When Apple stop supporting them and apps don’t work and it won’t hold the charge.

Currently got a 6s so I’m good for another year, at which point it will be 4 years old.

Always buy outright so like to get my moneys worth.

Fizbosshoes · 17/10/2020 14:46

I upgrade every 2 or 3 years but usually get a medium range samsung.
I don't get the idea of queuing for a new iphone. It's not like you get it free if you're first in the queue!!
