I want a really tasty fish pie loads of recipes to choose from, do you have a favourite?

I like making mine with Schwartz Chilli Lime Coriander Wet Sauce For Fish. Obviously you have to grate cheese on top of the mashed potato. Obviously.

TooMinty · 16/10/2020 18:09

The one I like has layers of thinly sliced potatoes rather than mash. And Parmesan on top. Sadly my kids prefer mashed potatoes with cheddar on top ☹️

Meandyouandyouandme · 16/10/2020 18:12

My favourite is Jamie Oliver’s from his Ministry of a food book, really easy and no white sauce to make.

Mash to sauce ratio is important. As is choice of fish

funtimefrank · 16/10/2020 18:31

I also really like the ministry of food Jamie one. We add the optional tomatoes and it's so so easy.

BammBamm · 16/10/2020 18:46

Another vote for the Jamie recipe here. Always gone down well with family and friends.

formerbabe · 16/10/2020 18:49

I make a white sauce

Then I add

A bag of frozen fish pie mix (it's already cubed and boneless/skinless)

Two hardboiled eggs chopped into eighths

Handful of frozen petit pois

Finely chopped gherkins

Then put in dish and top with mash and grated cheese

It's very easy and tasty

PurBal · 16/10/2020 18:57

I just make a white sauce and use fish pie mix and cheese, my husband prefers pasta to potatoes so we call it "fish pie pasta". My top tip is that I always use mustard powder in my roux. I feel like an idiot for asking but are there alternative recipes? I thought fish pie was one of those standard things like bolognese (though obviously the pasta is weird on our part).

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 16/10/2020 18:58

large dish
peas on the bottom, add sliced boiled eggs, prawns and cubed raw fish

make a really thick sauce so thick it barely pours, if it pours too easily it'll run away once the fish is cooked. Double cream stirred though it makes it really rich.

mash...more butter and cream than anyone thinks reasonable and snip chives into it

into a really hot oven until the potato is golden and crusty

you may swap peas for spinach or leeks ...the leeks will need to be sweated first in butter
fish...must be something white, something smoked and big chunks of salmon, also prawns
eggs ...don't boil them to death, just a bit more than soft boiled

no cheese, it's not decent with fish.

Great, thank you!

Rick Stein’s recipe...I’ll never eat another! Double cream makes it so delicious

I like this one - fish pie with saffron mash

fruitpastille · 16/10/2020 19:54

It's a toss up between Charlie Bighams or Tesco Finest. Both delicious and probably cheaper when you consider the prawns.

BruceAndNosh · 16/10/2020 19:55

This one is amazing, it uses a cauliflower topping instead of potato

Jamie Oliver / Come Dine With Me - mixed fish and prawns, quartered boiled eggs, sauce is made with onions fried in butter with creme fraiche, seasoning and a handful of cheese, some lemon juice and mustard. Top with mashed potato. You can put spinach in too.

Same here, it’s my favourite recipe by far, so easy too!
CoronaBollox · 16/10/2020 22:18

First line up your fish peices on an oven tray, then lob it in the bin.

Joking of course, may have to try some of these recipes. Have yet to taste a fish pie that doesnt instantly make me Envy

InTheLongGrass · 16/10/2020 22:31

Joe Wicks, but with cheesy mash on top if you can face the extra washing up. Filo pastry saves a pan!

BoudiccasBoudoir · 16/10/2020 22:39

Smoked haddock, salmon, and either white, sometimes some prawns. Béchamel sauce with bay leaf and a little nutmeg. Spring greens. Mashed potatoes. Cheese crust on top of the mash.

OR

Kids fish pie.
Same fish. Cheese sauce. Peas, sweet corn, maybe peas. Mashed potatoes. Cheese crust on top of the mash

YellowBeryl1 · 16/10/2020 22:58

I buy the Tesco Finest Fish Mix.

I boil peeled red potatoes for best mash.

I soften a diced onion in frying pan, then add a tub of cream cheese. Then add some vegetable stock (half a bisto cube plus water). Then add the fish (salmon, cod, smoked haddock and King prawns) and a handful of sweetcorn. After a couple of minutes I pour the fish and sauce into oven dish, put mash on top and bake in oven for 35 mins. Kids love it.

This Jamie Oliver one: www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fish-recipes/fantastic-fish-pie/

The addition of smoked fish is good. Personally I don't like salmon in a fish pie. Prawns are dreadful - they tend to lose their own flavour and go rubbery.

Yes this one's absolutely amazing. Used to make it regularly, then once they'd been fully weaned (including on this), they refused to eat it, and I've barely made it since, despite it being a favourite of mine and DH's. Might make it again this week...the kids can have something else.
