Think I've just experienced pressure selling and feel drained now

Hello. Just need to talk about my experience.
I had a company come round to quote for new windows. They said it would cost £6k. However they could do it for £4k but I had to sign up now and pay 10%. I said no I needed to get more quotes as this was my first quote. Then he kept saying it was a shame etc. But I thought no if it was such a good deal you could wait a week for me to decide. Or is normal? Do you have commit then and there to get a good deal. I need a brew now. I'm drained

Oh, God, it's awful Did he ring his boss half way through to see if he could give you a super special deal that nobody else can get?

Never let them over the threshold.

motheroreily · 16/10/2020 11:47

Yes he did. He also asked for a glass of water at one point. I wonder if he text the boss when I was out of the room to give him some information. How do you get quotes if you don't let someone in?

Well known sales tactic. Bin him off.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/10/2020 11:51

I don't know. DH was so pissed off by the performance he installed the windows himself. Sorry, I'm no use.

motheroreily · 16/10/2020 11:51

I think he realised I wouldn't be pressured when he asked what price he'd need to offer to get me to commit today and I said £1k Shock I feel OK now was starting to think I was a crazy to let the deal go

I had this with vision express before and was pressured into paying so much so we got money off laser eye surgery. I ended up cancelling and getting the money back through amex. It's so annoying and a terrible sales tactic.

Ilikewinter · 16/10/2020 11:54

Oh op thats shit......have to say we had a window salesman come round last night and i was dreading it....but he was done in 45mins, gave us some fab advice and a actually told us not to replace but repair some windows, gave us he price and will email the quote today and left.

This was a local company so maybe try local and give the big boys a miss - id been told by friends to avoid Safestyle at all costs!

MissKittyCat · 16/10/2020 11:55

Get local established firms round. In my experience they just measure up then send you a quote by email/post. They might ring a week later to ask if you have decided. No hassle or high pressure selling.

motheroreily · 16/10/2020 11:58

Thank you. This was a local company so I thought they'd be OK but maybe they're just a bit full on. I'll try some others. At least I know I can resist the hard sell.

Classic pressure sales. They'll keep phoning you I'm afraid OP to try and force their sale.

At least he has gone now.

I make a point of never using any company that tries to get anyone to commit to a big expense there and then. It shouldn't be so difficult to get a proper, written, professional and fair quote for a job that you can then give consideration to.

For windows you will probably be better off using a small local company rather than one of the big sales firms.

Snazzysausage · 16/10/2020 12:40

"You buy one you get one free! you buy one you get one free!" this used to be that company's selling style. A relative of ours couldn't get rid of them for almost 3 hrs - and all they wanted was a quote for patio doors and a small window🙄😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/10/2020 12:58

I had this not long ago - windows - and the special-just-for-you-and-just- for-today! deal of 50% off.

Had the same over 20 years ago - can’t believe they’re still doing it, and that they really think you’re that stupid!

Someone from the company phoned a few days later to ask why I hadn’t ordered.
So I told her, in very plain words.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/10/2020 13:04

Oh, and ditto a bit later with fitted wardrobes. Still nearly £4K even with their specially-for-you-if-you-sign-up-now! deal.

Instead I painted them - a whole wall of still-sound but old fitted wardrobes in plain but nasty white melamine - did them a nice matte cream colour with the special cupboard paint - and changed all the handles for much nicer wooden ones from Wickes.
Total cost £65! 😂

MsGee · 16/10/2020 13:09

We had this for windows, it was bizarre. He said that he couldn't guarantee the price if I didn't sign there and then as the price of glass fluctuated so much. I think I may have burst out laughing.

motheroreily · 16/10/2020 13:20

I wish I recorded it now Grin he used alot of techniques like trying to build rapport and making it a time limited deal. Then he said they were visiting someone else a few streets so they might take advantage of discount and I wouldn't be able to.

RiftGibbon · 16/10/2020 13:22

I can't stand all the nonsense these companies go through.
We've used the same company for years because the price they tell you is the actual price you'll pay.

Viviennemary · 16/10/2020 13:24

I never let those types over the doorstep. Get a small local firm/person recommended.

Noidea2114 · 16/10/2020 13:25

We had to threaten to set our dog on him to get rid of a window salesman and that was in the 1980's.

RhubarbBikini · 16/10/2020 13:33

Ha,ha! I knew this would be windows before I clicked on your thread.

Many years ago, we had one in the house til midnight. He just refused to put quote in writing. As if we'd sign up then and there without getting a few prices first.

We eventually got rid of him by standing up and telling him we were off to bed.

His initial quote was £16k (for a bog standard 3 bed semi), but tried to persuade us £8k would be a great deal.

Get ready to block their number on your phone I think I had about 56 calls from them in the days that followed.

Try local firms, much less irritating.

Hathertonhariden · 16/10/2020 13:35

Classic pressure selling. I once negotiated down from (an imaginary)£12K to £3K. It was a case of normally it would be £12k, but sign up today and he could do it for £6k. Insisting on getting other quotes and call to manager brought it down to £4k. My research showed £4k was reasonable. I insisted that other quotes were necessary so he asked what I would pay so I said £3k. He went pale but I did get it agreed.

He rang me the next day and said he'd noticed that there weren't any men in the photos I had on display so would I be interested in a date! Not an offer I was interested in taking up.
.

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/10/2020 13:38

This is why very often the company won’t deal with the female in the household if there is also a male living there. They want to do the sales pitch to both of you at the same time so you can’t say you’re going to run it past your husband.

They know they have to try and bamboozle you in the moment and get you to sign the documentation. Otherwise when you leave you’re going to come to your senses and wonder what the hell happrned.

MrMeeseekscando · 16/10/2020 13:38

I have a conversation at the start stating that I've worked in sales, understand their selling techniques and to please don't bother with the bullshit.
Some seem relieved. It's a horrible selling tactic.

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/10/2020 13:39

*passed ? I’m not sure which tense is correct 🤦🏻‍♀️

RaisinGhost · 16/10/2020 13:46

Oh yes this is so annoying and horrible. I was buying a car recently and I was dreading this. But the salesman was the opposite, he was very much like "buy this car if you want, or don't, totally up to you". I was so pleased with this non pressure I felt totally comfortable and bought the car. Not sure if it was a tactic in itself or he just wasn't arsed.

Serengetiqueen · 16/10/2020 13:47

Window firms are known for this....as well as those weird pre-recorded cold-calls. Don’t touch fgs!
