Think I've just experienced pressure selling and feel drained now

Hello. Just need to talk about my experience.
I had a company come round to quote for new windows. They said it would cost £6k. However they could do it for £4k but I had to sign up now and pay 10%. I said no I needed to get more quotes as this was my first quote. Then he kept saying it was a shame etc. But I thought no if it was such a good deal you could wait a week for me to decide. Or is normal? Do you have commit then and there to get a good deal. I need a brew now. I'm drained

Standard practice by bad window companies; it's their way of telling you they are bullying liars. Their installers will be even shoddier crooks than their salesman. On no account should you have anything to do with that company.

I always go on the basis that if someone needs to pressurise the customer in to a sale without time to consider other options it won't be a good deal. Any company actually offering a good deal will know that if it's a product you actually want and they let you take your time deciding there's a good chance you'll come back to them.

We had this the last time we bought windows. Started at £6k, was down to £4.5k by the time he left. Over the next two weeks we had three phone calls dropping the price each time until it was £2.5k, which incidentally was the price the independent place quoted us on their first visit a week earlier and we went with.

We had this with a kitchen company once as well. He was in our house for four hours telling us how dirty and unhygienic the kitchen was (because of a small gap between the worktop and cooker) and how they could do a massive deal for us as he liked us. Lots of calls to the manager. Eventually came up with a price of £9k for a kitchen that was 2 metres by 4 metres - like a corridor. When he went to the car to get some samples we locked the door behind him and turned all the lights off.

Had this shit with my mum ( 80) and chairs. She mentioned in passing that she'd called an 0800 number as it was free to call and someone was going to visit to talk about chairs that raised you up electrically.
So I said I'll be there as well.
Salesman turned up, showed a sample (after lugging from his car) and started his sales spiel. First, I said I deal with salesmen every day so, please, no bullshit. Then I said that I had to countersign every cheque to prevent my mum making mistakes (I lied). It got to the stage that when he suggested a price I of £1600 Shock I said no, then his 'special' buy one get on free was responded to with a 'well if we can have two for £1600Shock but my mum lives alone we'll have just one and pay £800, yes'? Eventually, I think he realised there was never going to be a sale so skulked off back to his car.
These salesmen are just scum. No morals as long as they can see a way to screw you over.

Thanks everyone. I am feeling better now. I've contacted some other local companies. Yes definitely it was a genuine good deal he'd have let me think about it and process the information. Not agree to spend £4000 there and then & pay a £400 deposit

When I was early twenties and brought my first flat, on my own. My boyfriend and Dad were both there when a window salesman came round to quote.

He first did his sales pitch to my Dad who said “it’s not my flat” then to my boyfriend who in turn said the same. Each time ten mins of hard sell bollocks. When it got to me I just said no thanks and escorted him out.

Glad you’re feeling better about it OP! I had one company insist my husband had to be home and were then shocked when I no longer even wanted a quote from them...

RB68 · 16/10/2020 19:45

completely normal and I would avoid anyone who did this - have they asked for an appt with you and your husband yet?? APparently some firms won't do appts unless you ar both thre - they are even worse
