Your favourite food items at Aldi?

I’m trying to cut my food bill in half.
We are a family of 4 (3 adults and a 16 year old) and at the moment we spend £500-£600 a month on food.

I’ve been advised to shop at Aldi, so what would you recommend, and what would you stay away from?

I find most products that are just different name from the brand product taste the same. Don't be worried to try anything. Check used by dates. The middle aisles are hard sometimes to go down! If you want to watch your spending stay away Grin

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 15/10/2020 21:56

I think it’s all good. Almond croissants are v. Good.

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 15/10/2020 22:02

We’re big fans of most things in this house.

Particular favourites for me are the melt in the middle fish cakes. Meat in our nearest is excellent quality too.

Family of 4 (2 adults, 1 hollow 8yr old & 3yr old). Spend about £60-70 a week for everything including 4 pack ups & all household items.

Mediterranean wraps, fish burgers and red wine without sulphites.

Sixtonskip · 15/10/2020 22:06

The only thing I really avoid is their smoked mackerel as I always find it's full of bones. Fresh veg often doesn't last very well but fine if going to be used within a day or so. They do some cheese pot things in terracotta type ramekins in the fresh section in the run up to Christmas which are amazing!

burglarbettybaby · 15/10/2020 22:09

Yes it's all good. Things like fresh pesto are lovely. Salads products cheeses
Fish
Beef chicken etc
You can't go wrong with most products. I use the washing powder and everything.

Stonecrop · 15/10/2020 22:10

I love the frozen section at Aldi

confusednortherner · 15/10/2020 22:11

Most of it is great, things that jump to mind are the toffee cream tarts, tomato soup, beans, chocolates especially the caramel filled one but the fake mars etc are good too. The frozen chicken bites are handy freezer teas. The fresh pizza bases are brilliant too.

Ignacious · 15/10/2020 22:13

Mature cheddar cheese bake with Kentish cider. I love it.

Holdingtherope · 15/10/2020 22:14

Groovy bars and cookie dough biscuit thing

Glitterbubbles · 15/10/2020 22:15

Fresh pizzas are good
Tortellini is good
Straight to wok noodles
Yoghurts
Uncooked meat
Chocolate of course!

Tend to avoid fresh stuff as it doesn't last long

Kisforkaylied · 15/10/2020 22:15

The mini flavoured bruschettas are amazing.
Choceur and Dairyfine chocolate, fruit conserves and pretend nutella lovely.
Homestyle frozen chips, skyr, sliced ham, houmous, colombian instant coffee, frozen pizzas great.

The pretend biscoffs and jammy dodgers not so good.

Fruit & veg can be hit & miss depending on which store you go to - one nearest us is great but the one 4 miles away is awful.

MrsP2015 · 15/10/2020 22:15

I found their fruit & veg went off really quickly (days).

Love their
Noodles
Burgers
Chicken breast portions
Nuts
Waters/ juices
Baby wipes
Shower gels
Pizza
Bin bags

Really like aldi, don't think anything is particularly bad.

Their seeded bread is lovely as is their black olive focaccia. Their baked lentil crisps are good. As PP said their meat is usually very good. Ham hock special pie is good. Mussels in white wine. Flavoured salmon and melt in the middle fish cakes. Cannot leave their chorizo & Gouda rolls. Elderflower water is good, their gin and there's a nice rose wine can't think of the name but has a feather on the front and is a copy of barefoot I think! Enjoy

ineedanotherholiday · 15/10/2020 22:17

Oh I forgot their salted pretzel chocolate bar is so good! Yes I like aldi :)

Glitterbubbles · 15/10/2020 22:17

By fresh stuff I mean fruit and veg!

ChetChet · 15/10/2020 22:18

confusednortherner Remind me again: where would I find the toffee cream tarts, please?

Thecrisplover · 15/10/2020 22:21

Buy most things in Aldi. All cleaning stuff too.
I find it's getting better all the time.
Wine is good too!

anothernamereally · 15/10/2020 22:21

Yorkshire puddings from the 'better' range (almost as good as home made) - ditto roast potatoes. Cheese pots

Landlubber2019 · 15/10/2020 22:23

Also are now starting click n collect !

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 15/10/2020 22:24

Love aldi. The only things I don’t buy from there is washing powder / conditioner and my shower gel (theirs is a bit thin) and shampoo and conditioner. Get everything else

Favourites are the hummus crisps, fish cakes, chocolates, cheeses and yoghurts, plus freezer stuff especially skin on fries and pizzas. Ready meals are nicer than marks I think though less of a selection. And their bread is lovely too. Our fresh fruit and veg lasts well

Gertie75 · 15/10/2020 22:24

Norpak is their version of Lurpak and much nicer, I use the softest version, it's lovely on toast.

The smoked sandwich ham is nice too.

Their deodorants and shampoo are also good, I was very dubious about whether they'd be as good as well known brands but they are.

MrsMidgeMaisel · 15/10/2020 22:24

Another one for the melt in middle fish cakes!!!

nearlyoldenough · 15/10/2020 22:27

We had some frozen soy and ginger calamari last week and it was delicious

shitinmyhandsandclap · 15/10/2020 22:30

Their ribs are good and the special coleslaw is really nice.
