Making bonfire night special/where to buy fireworks

Hi all,

In the spirit of having things to look forward to, what are you doing for bonfire night? I hate Halloween so always make bonfire night great.

Also- where do you get ok fireworks from?

OP posts:

Why do they have to be so loud? It is perfectly possible to have a display without all the loud bangs.

However, I am with the majority here and wish that fireworks were not available for sale to the general public.

Coffeecak3 · 19/10/2020 07:39

I too think it should be organised displays only.
Will never under stand people letting off fireworks in their garden.

DaftyD · 19/10/2020 07:43

The way to deal with fallen wood is let it rot for the ecosystems which need it, or chip it for mulch

Good point. We are going to have a mulching party followed by a ceremony where we draw pictures of fireworks then put big black crosses through them while observing a minute's silence for all the crying shaking animals. LEST WE FORGET.

tigger1001 · 19/10/2020 08:07

@PercyKirke

Most people I know in rural areas hate them too. Livestock and farm buildings are v vulnerable

The OP in her last post would seem to disagree. Also if you are fool enough to let off fireworks near livestock and farm buildings with straw or hay inside you deserve all you get.

I live in a semi rural area. Fireworks cause a great deal of distress to animals. They don't need to be right next to them either. The noise carries. I know if people who have to spend the night (at least one) in the stables keeping ponies calm so they don't injure themselves.

Never mind the horrific burns that can happen if a firework ends up hitting an animal. And these lanterns....

Fireworks just shouldn't be sold to the general public.

What a poor taste remark that is.

MB90 · 19/10/2020 09:18

Please don’t do your own fireworks.

It’s dangerous and selfish. It puts people at risk, keeps children awake and terrifies animals.

Not to mention, emergency services really don’t need this added strain this year.

Buy some sparklers and be done with it

What a pathetic comment

I've bought a set of indoor fireworks - the ones that come on a cardboard tray and have names like The Magical Mystic Fountain and are actually all of 2cm high and last around 7 seconds. Loved them as a child and was thrilled to find they are still just as crap as they were then! Can't wait. And there are magic snakes! Love magic snakes! Will probably also have hot chocolate round the fire pit in the garden if weather is OK.

We live rurally next door to a stables so fireworks are an absolute no.

user1471538283 · 19/10/2020 16:27

Please don't get any. They are a danger to children, pets and wildlife. The emergency services can do without the extra work. I've never understood why people buy them to set off in their own gardens. Even this year with no displays its selfish when some of us have pets and just want a bit of peace

Antonov · 19/10/2020 16:37

@PercyKirke

Well I lost. Sad. I thought it wouldn't be until post number 3 that the anti-firework brigade kicked in. OP if you are anywhere near Aldershot, there's a firework maker in North Camp who makes and sells some great stuff.
Ah, but I think those are mortars or hesh rounds @PercyKirke

Best to light those in the garden, not on the table inside.

I enjoy a garden display too, more so than a public one. When we were younger we had them but my parents have a very wide, long garden. We currently live on a new build estate and whilst our garden is bigger than average it backs on to too many others. We could do them on the front drive but I will probably just watch other people's. I don't mind the noise as it is only just one night in our area, if it was going on for days I could understand the annoyance. Not that concerned about other people's pets tbh same as some people don't care that young children might get scared.

MrsExpo · 20/10/2020 20:57

FFS .... fireworks Angry .... just why??? No, no, no.

Bluesheep8 · 21/10/2020 08:24

I can't believe people find such a grotesque comment amusing Hmm

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/10/2020 09:28

I used to absolutely love the bonfire and back garden display we had every year when I was a child. But the fireworks were ‘milder’ ones, Roman candles, Catherine Wheels etc., small rockets and sparklers - not the mega-bang things that seem to be much more the norm now.

Personally I think it’s a shame that Halloween - with all the vast mountains of plastic tat that is everywhere now - has largely overtaken Bonfire Night - though having said that my own dds always loved Halloween (not that we had all the orange tat then) ditto little Gdcs now.

Zenithbear · 21/10/2020 09:38

Another here who thinks that fireworks shouldn't be available to the public.
Official displays on bonfire night itself fine.
I won't participate because of my animals (one is terrified) and wildlife that get injured and killed every year.
Love halloween we usually have a party.

Bummsbet · 21/10/2020 09:54

Bizarre how it's still even legal to make and sell explosives and call them entertainment!

JanewaysBun · 21/10/2020 13:16

I love a good firework (no I REALLY love them) but think it should be organised displays only. The story of the 1 yo's near miss at being hit by one in his bed is enough for me to be certain that it should be experts only.
