Hi all,

In the spirit of having things to look forward to, what are you doing for bonfire night? I hate Halloween so always make bonfire night great.

Also- where do you get ok fireworks from?

OP posts:

Its the one occasion, and I use that term lightly, that I detest. I hate fireworks and the disruption they cause. They are so antisocial. Organised displays on or as near to 5th November as possible. However its about a month before and then a month after that they are going off.

thecatsthecats · 16/10/2020 19:45

@Clymene

The U.K. is the only country in Europe that sells really dangerous fireworks for bloody idiots to set off in their back gardens. In one of the most densely populated countries this is abject stupidity
Um, have you never been to Germany at New Year then?

It's like the battle of the Somme. Fireworks let off regularly in the street, car parks full of them by the next morning. Far from the only country with similar traditions.

Pancakeorcrepe · 16/10/2020 20:14

Don’t be one of the idiots setting off fireworks at home. It really really really is a stupid thing to do, and inconsiderate.

Toilenstripes · 16/10/2020 20:16

@SilenceOfTheEmu

I don’t think fire works should be sold to the general public - they should only be allowed in professionally organised public events.
Absolutely agree! They’re dangerous, a noise nuisance and they terrify animals.
CherryPavlova · 16/10/2020 20:23

I’m hoping will still do Village fireworks with sausages, bonfire toffee and vegetable soup.
It will have to be slightly less spontaneous, but should still be possible if we use different fields for groups of six each and do it over the fences. It’s something for all generations so will be very welcome regardless of noise. Most of the dogs are gundogs, so not in the leat bothered by them.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 16/10/2020 20:24

Fire pit in the garden, toast marshmallows, have some sparklers. I would never do home fireworks, they are just not worth the risks. I feel sorry for the fire brigade and a&e staff this year

Giraffey1 · 16/10/2020 20:31

No, please don’t. Private fireworks are not a life necessity. If they were limited to one evening then that would be bad enough, but as it is, they are used by thoughtless individuals (not saying you are one) who let them off at all hours of the day and night, weeks on end. ... terrifying cats, dogs, horses etc. Terrible for ex service personnel, too ....

wheresmolly · 16/10/2020 20:37

Please don't. Just don't.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 16/10/2020 20:42
@Rose789 God that’s awful! I’ve always despised fireworks but that’s made me even more terrified of them.
Me too. I spend much of bonfire night, and the evenings around it, sitting on the sofa shaking like a leaf and in tears, trying, and usually failing, to distract myself from the panic the non stop bangs make me feel.

gingganggooleywotsit · 17/10/2020 12:57

What a load of misery guts there are on this thread.

Mistymonday · 17/10/2020 12:58

I think fireworks should be banned. Dreadful things. Hth.

I8toys · 17/10/2020 13:00

Why is it miserable to not like lighting things on fire and letting off explosives for a totally bizarre reason.

Disappointing bangs, a few oohs and its all over - bit like my sex life.

AuthorsOfForever · 17/10/2020 13:02

We usually do a little fire in our in our fire pit and get some sparklers for the kids. As I've gotten older, the more I've realised how incredibly irresponsible it is to have fireworks in your garden.

Just have some coco and some sparklers.

gingganggooleywotsit · 17/10/2020 13:03

Sometimes it feels like mumsnet is a paralell universe. I live in a built up area with semis and terraced houses. Nearly everyone i know with kids has a few fireworks in the garden. It's not seen as a big deal. I am a dog owner and one of us stays inside with him for a cuddle. It's one hour, out of his year.

I8toys · 17/10/2020 13:05

Its never just an hour thought is it on one night - its numerous displays from primary schools, cricket club, football club going off every night around end Oct to middle of November. You never know for about 3/4 weeks when they are going to start up.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/10/2020 13:06

@Peachypips78

Bloody hell! I didn't see that coming.I had no idea people hated fireworks so much.

We live in the country away from many other houses (although we do have a few neighbours) so haven't come across this dislike of fireworks before. Our neighbours also have fireworks. I've never even thought to be concerned about them. Eye opening to see that they cause so many issues.

We have a dog and a cat and they are fine with them but totally understand that many wouldn't cope with it.

When I said 'make it great' I didn't mean some stupendous party - I meant we have soup in a mug outside by the fire pit and marshmallows with sparklers after going to a local display. We haven't done fireworks at home before.

When we were kids everyone did it at home- very few organised displays. Maybe there's a reason for more organised displays now then!

If you live in the country please reconsider, it's not just domestic pets they upset. They can cause harm & distress to wildlife & livestock too. We're rural & there were incidents with both horses & cattle last year.
gingganggooleywotsit · 17/10/2020 13:09

I agree it does go on for weeks which is silly.

gingganggooleywotsit · 17/10/2020 13:09

Lucky you lot dont live in Germany..

YoureRight · 17/10/2020 13:14

‘WhAt a LoAd oF misEry gUts’
cool story, bro. You’re right, home fireworks are miserable, only self centred scumbags choose to inflict them on the mile radius around them.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 17/10/2020 13:15

Most supermarkets sell them OP.

I LOVE fireworks, & really enjoy a garden display more than a public one.

Hope you have a lovely party.

gingganggooleywotsit · 17/10/2020 13:16

nimby moaning minnies!

gingganggooleywotsit · 17/10/2020 13:17

Couldn't agree more!

I saw a display stand full of fireworks in a shop in France a couple of weeks ago. They weren't locked away in a cabinet as they are in the UK, you could just put whichever ones you wanted in your basket and takes them home
LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 17/10/2020 13:33

Well we've bought a fire pit and toasting forks, ordered a morrisons bonfire night box, extra long sparklers and some indoor fireworks - mainly smoke volcanoes and snaps from amazon to have outside.

We have a small garden pets of our own and both neighbours have dogs so don't want anything too loud near us.

Last year one of the further away neighbour must have got angle badly wrong and one big rocket went of right outside our patio doors - which frightened us and the cats - so hoping that doesn't happen this year especially if we're in the garden.

Last few years the single ignition display firework - or fireworks in a box seem to be very popular around here - I think all the major supermarkets and many on-line retailers sell fireworks of all types.
