Really stupid question about prescriptions!

mumof1littlebun · 14/10/2020 06:31

I need to request a repeat prescription but at my surgery you can’t ring up and do it you have to request it in writing. This is the first time in years I’ve needed a prescription and used to ring up to do it so no idea the correct way to do this! Do I literally just write a note stating what I want?! Feel really stupid at my age to not even know what to do Blush

Call and ask the receptionists at your surgery as they all probably have different policy. We can request ours online or used to fill out a slip and post it into a letter box inside... when we were allowed inside that is!

kimlo · 14/10/2020 06:33

is it not on the internet? At my surgery you either ring or order it online.

I would ring and ask what you do.

mumof1littlebun · 14/10/2020 06:37

No they say you specifically can’t ring and have to do it in writing or online and I can’t seem to access my online account

Ring as there are different ways. Mine I can order online and the prescription is sent direct to my nominated chemist who text me when it’s ready. (but only repeat prescriptions and every now and then I’ll order and be called for a medication review - ie is there any change, is the medication still helpful type check).

HeronLanyon · 14/10/2020 06:38

Oops cross post. In that case email them. Set out exactly what you need - I once got tablets instead of capsules for something and wished I’d been more detailed.

FippertyGibbett · 14/10/2020 06:39

I had to ring the surgery to get them to send a link to my email so that I can order on line.
Just give them a ring and ask.

mumof1littlebun · 14/10/2020 06:41

Sorry I should have been more clear, they only allow you to do it in writing and put it in the post box in the entrance! It sure why things are so Stone Age at my doctors! I just feel like I’m missing something or do I literally just write a little note?!

If you have to write a note I would put your name, date of birth, address and prescription request. That should give them all the information they need!

Zoflorabore · 14/10/2020 06:45

I’m on repeats too and used to post my request in the reception area but not allowed in now but there is a post box outside.

I usually tick what i need on the printed list that usually comes in the bag from the chemist with my meds in.

I know in my surgery it’s not automatic to have online access. It has to be requested and I.D is needed to set it up.
Once done it is possible to order online. I keep saying I’m going to do this!

What you need to write op is your name
and date of birth, address and phone number and a description of the medication with dosage.

Hope that helps Flowers

HeronLanyon · 14/10/2020 06:45

I’d add in your nhs number as further identifier, if known. And contact number if they need to speak to you about it. (As if they don’t have all of these details but better safe than sorry I guess).

ExclamationPerfume · 14/10/2020 06:47

At ours we can either post the repeat slip that is attached to the old prescription or do it online.

Sleephead1 · 14/10/2020 06:49

I work in a surgery if you have the back of your prescription you can just tick next to what you want if you dont write your name, date of birth and address on a piece of paper at the top then list what you would like. Add your contact number incase they need to speak to you.

MoodShiteing · 14/10/2020 06:49

Do you have repeat slips from an old prescription?

It's the tear-off bit the pharmacy sometimes hand back to you with your medication. There's usually a list on there you can tick what you need.

If not, put a note with your name, date of birth and address on and a note of what you need. Include the quantity and strength eg. 56 Paracetamol tablets.

If it's something you get regularly, you can ask your pharmacy to order it on your behalf too.

Bagadverts · 14/10/2020 06:53

Do you have the last page of your previous prescription. It may have a list with tick boxes and you can use that and post it. it’s a good idea to include dose for each drug.

cherrytree63 · 14/10/2020 06:54

If it's the first time in years since you've needed a prescription you'll probably have to speak to your GP anyway even if you've had the medication before.

Ginfordinner · 14/10/2020 06:54

Does the surgery have its own website? There may be instructions on what to do on there. We have Patient Access that allows us to order online.

CornishTiger · 14/10/2020 06:55

Don’t forget name of Chemist you want it sending to electronically.

I normally email mine. If yours don’t do that they need to get modern.

Also arrange to get your online access sorted ASAP. I use mine for prescription request and booking appointments

Pipandmum · 14/10/2020 06:56

I put 'x drug as per usual prescription' as I get it frequently and can never remember the different amounts for the different medicines.
Or something along the lines of 'xyz tablets 200mg x 26'.
The form itself will have space for name and address and possibly your nhs number and your phone number.
However, I did this last month at my GP and when I called a few days later to make sure they processed it they had no record of it 🙄.

Soubriquet · 14/10/2020 07:00

Whenever I’ve lost my prescription note I write a normal note and then put on my name, address, date of birth and then whatever prescriptions I need

Not had a problem yet

Mamimawr · 14/10/2020 07:07

When I pick up my tablets there is a piece of paper on the outside of the bag with details of the repeat precription. I keep that and when I need more I post the paper in the post box outside the surgery. IF I can't find the piece of paper I just write my name, address, DOB and details of the tablets I need and post that.

Lolaloveslemonade · 14/10/2020 07:12

Yes, we write notes!

REPEAT PRESCRIPTION REQUEST
Name
Address
DOB
Name of drug
Nominated pharmacy for collection ( ours are sending prescriptions straight to pharmacies)

Mummyoftwo91 · 14/10/2020 07:12

I work in a gp surgery, usually you can email this request, or post it or hand it in at the front door, to access your online account one of the receptionists should be able to reset it for you

Silvercatowner · 14/10/2020 07:26

If you haven't had the medication for years the surgery may consider it a new request rather than a repeat.

mumof1littlebun · 14/10/2020 12:53

Thank you for all the advice. Yes they do need to update their ways but I should also sort out patient access. I had it until they unregistered me after mistaking me for someone else and made a song a dance about re registering but that another story! It’s not a new prescription, I went onto the pill after having a baby recently and just need another lot

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/10/2020 12:55

if it's a repeat then just tick the box on the repeat prescription form that came with your medication and drop it at the GP. Then get yourself sorted with an online account.
