My heating is broken, what should I put my toddler in to sleep tonight?

My heating is broken and British Gas can't come out until tomorrow. The thermostat says it's currently around 18.5 degrees in the house and I'm not sure what to put my 2yo for sleeping in tonight. Her room normally gets warmer than the rest of the flat so she usually sleeps in a long sleeved top, nappy and a 1 tog sleeping bag (we don't have any bigger ones that fit at the moment). I don't want to overwhelm her with layers tonight but I'm worried about her getting cold- I'm thinking vest, long sleeved top, leggings, socks, cardigan and the sleeping bag. I can put a blanket over her but she's a right wriggler so the chances of it staying on are slim. What do you all think?

I assume you don't leave your heating on all night though? So just what she would normally wear?

OudRose · 09/10/2020 14:53

I'd just put in normal night clothes and add extra blankets as needed.

When you check on her in the night, you'll know if her room feels too cold. Don't stress Smile

maybe an extra jumper and socks?
a hot water bottle (filled with luke warm water)?

Grin that's warmer than our house normally is in the daytime and we have it cooler at night.

Her normal stuff; she'll wake up if she's cold

Pulloutbed · 09/10/2020 14:55

Mumsnet always punches me in the face with others realities!!

She will be fine in PJs and a vest if you feel the need.

Khajit · 09/10/2020 14:56

I'd probably do vest, long sleeve top, trousers and sleeping bag for that temperature. It's not cold really so don't worry too much.

It's set to 20 and switches on if it falls below that- usually it doesn't turn on-on during the night because it warms up in the day but it doesn't get this cold.

I should add that 20 in our house feels a lot colder than 20 in family member's houses- idk if it's cos we're not well insulated or the thermostat is a bit dodgy

When mine were 2 they wore normal pyjamas and had a duvet. Never left my heating on at night either.

ApplestheHare · 09/10/2020 15:05

We haven't turned our heating on yet so our house is around 17/18 most of the time. My 1 year old sleeps in a onesie or pjs and has a duvet but she kicks that off most of the time and still seems happy temperature wise.

Morechocmorechoc · 09/10/2020 15:06

Extra cardigan could make toddler too hot. That's worse than being cold

emptyshelvesagain · 09/10/2020 15:07

When you say a sleeping bag do you mean a baby one that fits over the shoulders and zips up? How does she get out of bed? They are quite restrictive. Or do you mean a regular sleeping bag? In which case why does she have that and not a duvet anyway?

Like a baby one, she's in a cot.

Sounds like the cardigan might be overcautious, I think I'll ditch that.

Just her normal pyjamas and bag will be fine. We never have our heating on overnight even in December/January.

Sparkle733 · 09/10/2020 15:19

I'd put a vest, pjs long sleeved and socks. Maybe add a blanket over her sleeping bag but I know what you mean my dd is always moving about.
Blankets don't stay on long at all.

MinnieMountain · 09/10/2020 15:46

Bring her into bed with you if you're worried.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/10/2020 15:50

I’d go for leggings and socks or tights and a long sleeved top and vest.

Ginfilledcats · 09/10/2020 16:19

Our 4m sleeps inn16-18 degrees at night on a good day bless her haha

Baby grow plus 1 tog bag will be fine. We do that or long sleeved vest and 2.5 tog bag.

If you google it will come up with loads of tables of what to put baby in at night at various temps

kowari · 09/10/2020 16:31

Just have her in your bed in the same layers as you. She will be warmer with another person and you can pull up the quilt if she wiggles and gets cold.

riotlady · 09/10/2020 16:35

She can't sleep in our bed unfortunately, we've tried before and she thinks it's an invitation to a midnight party xD

DS aged 1 is in the coolest bedroom in our house - usually around 17 at the moment when he goes to bed and colder overnight, down to 15 or so. He's in a short sleeved vest, PJs and a 3.5 tog sleeping bag and sleeps well - he's warm in the morning, but his hands are usually quite cold so I think it's about right. Not sure where you are, but it's supposed to be cold tonight, so I'd guess your place is likely to get down to 15 or so tonight too. I'd keep an eye on the temp as we head to bedtime, but if you've only got a 1 tog bag, I'd think you'd need at least two good layers beneath, maybe three on the torso. So that would tie up with what you're thinking?

TheBestSpoon · 09/10/2020 16:39

Alternatively, if you can beg, borrow or steal an electric heater, you can use that to warm her bedroom before bedtime? Wouldn't leave it on overnight, but British Gas gave us one when our gas was cut off for maintenance works and it at least mean it's warm to start the night and then won't get as cold.

PotteringAlong · 09/10/2020 16:42

It’s not cold today and heating your house to 20 degrees is really warm! I would just put them to sleep in whatever they would normally wear. Put a pair of socks on if you’re worried but a babygro, vest and sleeping bag will be fine

InTheLongGrass · 09/10/2020 16:43

Have a Google of sleeping bag and what to wear.
I'd go with vest, pyjamas, sleeping bag and then add a blanket if the house is getting cooler when you go to bed.
FWIW, our heating has been on for 2 hours since last spring. Its not that cold is it?
