When will I not be over the limit to drive? 😳

Drank an inordinate amount of wine with my friend yesterday, we were celebrating my new job and him not having the C after a nasty scare.
He just kept buying more and I was too stupid to say I'd had enough.

Kids were safe and sound with DH.

I'm worried I'm still over the limit this morning to drive despite having stopped drinking at 6pm.

I have a day off but need to drive this morning but want to make sure I'm safe.

How long does it take?!

Please no flaming, I'm suitably embarrassed already.

Everyone is different. 1 hour per unit is an average. You can only estimate. You're also not 100% sure how much you drank.

If there's a lot at stake, don't risk it. Take another means of transport and rescue your car tomorrow/this evening.

Clymene · 05/10/2020 09:28

And congrats on the job and your mate's health report :)

I don't hope some of the posters on here haven't been drinking because reading comprehension seems to be quite poor for sober people.

movingonup20 · 05/10/2020 09:32

Normal strength wine in a 175 measure to be safe I would allow 2 hours per glass. So 7 glasses = 14 hours. You are fine now

Greenkit · 05/10/2020 09:43

You come down 7 units per hour

So work out what you drank and then, work out how long it will take you to come down.

In the taxi now and it's pushing towards £20

OUCH.

Lesson learned!

Better to be safe, @CovidStoleTheRainbow!

gamerchick · 05/10/2020 09:51

Ah I feel your pains OP. The taxi of shame has happened to the best of us.

I won't drive if I feel hungover no matter how much or little I had. It's just not worth it.

CleverCatty · 05/10/2020 09:58

I'd honestly not drive this morning - leave it until e.g. lunchtime and have a good breakfast (lots of carbs and sausage etc) and also a good lunch too - to soak up the alcohol.

If you have a banging headache to accompany the hangover then I'd be best off not driving.

better to get a taxi than to have an accident or risk getting caught and breathalised.

Thanks all for the advice, and not judging me!

As a general rule of thumb if you have to ask if you’re safe to drive, you probably sent safe to drive.

And if you’re not sure how much you had err on the side of caution.

OP you’ve been very sensible about it so this is not aimed at you but I’m horrified how many people there are on here trying to justify you driving and count your S alcohol intake down to make it ok when actually you are not sure how much you drank and should be counting up the way to make sure you don’t put anyone at risk. No wonder so many people lose their license the morning after.

Hope the hangover isn’t too bad and your day goes well.

nosswith · 05/10/2020 10:18

I'm glad you opted for the taxi, OP.

Someonesayroadtrip · 05/10/2020 10:20

Congratulations on the new job! Not sure why anyone Paul judge you. You're an adult and being very responsible. I was shocked at the price of Taxis the other night too.

ancientgran · 05/10/2020 10:26

£20 is worth it. Just think if you had been stopped and breathalyzed, now how much would you pay to turn the clock back? I bet it would be more the £20.

So it's one taxi. Now extrapolate that to 12 months worth of taxis and the 5 years of high insurance premiums if you had tested positive.
Ninkanink · 05/10/2020 10:38

Why on earth would we judge??

So you were celebrating and you had a fair bit to drink...so what?

It’s the fear talking, that’s all! Glad you took a taxi though.

Flowers Congratulations on your new job!

FippertyGibbett · 05/10/2020 11:18

I wouldn’t drive until after lunch and make sure you eat breakfast and lunch.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 05/10/2020 11:29

Taxi is a good idea op. I think sometimes even if you are no longer over the limit, it’s best to avoid driving if you can if you have a stinking hangover. I know I don’t always feel safe to drive with a bad hangover, even though my breathalyser says I no longer have alcohol in my body

pointythings · 05/10/2020 11:45

Taking a taxi is a good idea. No judgment from me though, we've all done it.

(Widow of an alcoholic here - I know the difference)

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 05/10/2020 15:12

Thanks.

I feel sick this afternoon I think I over-carbed myself.

I have The Fear and ive been guilt cleaning the house all day.

I'm looking forward to a few weeks just on tea, now!

OP posts:
Janaih · 05/10/2020 15:19

I'm impressed you made it out the house. I drank a similar amount friday and spent all of saturday being sick Confused still felt rough sunday although at least I could eat and drink and keep it down.

Food doesn’t ‘soak up alcohol’ having an empty stomach stops you getting drunk so fast but it isn’t a sponge!
CleverCatty · 06/10/2020 10:17

Bashful Clam - I know food doesn't technically soak up alcohol but you feel much better having something good for it rather than salad - though I have also felt better after salad and smoothie.

Yeah, right... I always say that and then after a night off am ready to go again! Wink
