What do you think the chances are that I’ll be going to America for Christmas?

We have had flights booked to fly to New York on Boxing Day since January with DP, ds and my parents to visit family. With everything as it is I haven’t even considered that we would be going, I have just been waiting for the flights to be cancelled. I called the airline a few days ago as we have agreed on a date to (very hopefully but we thought unlikely) to next year however they advised we aren’t able to change the flights but that it was unlikely we would be going of course.

However, i have just been reading that they may be opening up air corridors to the US in time for thanksgiving? I haven’t even considered that there would be a chance that we’d be able to go. If we can go (as in it’s not going against advice, insurance would be valid, we won’t need to isolate) then I would go as would my dp.

Are you or your DH a dual national?

VenusClapTrap · 05/10/2020 08:58

I think it’s unlikely, to be honest.

The air corridors are a figment of Trump’s imagination. Why would you want to fly to USA when the Infection rate is so high there? Start planning Boxing Day at home and a zoom hook up with family.

zafferana · 05/10/2020 09:00

There is talk of opening up a quarantine-free air corridor between London and New York, but so far it's just talk and it's been going on for months now with no progress. Airlines aren't cancelling flights or offering changes that far in advance yet, so I would just wait OP. No one can predict what will happen in the future, but with cases on the rise here and a very long winter ahead of us I would think it's unlikely that you'll be going.

Houseplanted · 05/10/2020 09:02

Highly unlikely. We just received a refund from BA for a holiday to America that was booked for the end of this month.

samosamimosa · 05/10/2020 09:04

Our holiday to the USA in January has just been cancelled.

serialreturner · 05/10/2020 09:05

We're not even choosing to go to Ireland. I think you'd be mad to go, sorry!

userxx · 05/10/2020 09:08

I'd say zero to nil.

TeenTraumaTrials · 05/10/2020 09:14

I think it's highly unlikely unfortunately. Hope you manage to have a good Christmas and make contact remotely with your family.

We are booked to go to the US at the end of June (2nd rebooking after Easter and then this month got cancelled) and I'm currently thinking it's 50/50 at best for us going - probably only if there is a vaccine and we are able to pay to get it privately as DH and I are both under 50. I'm even less optimistic about our (again rebooked) European holiday at Feb mid-term ........

FelicityPike · 05/10/2020 09:16

I really don’t see that being possible.

TimInRuislip · 05/10/2020 09:34

Yeah I have already made plans, it hasn’t even entered my mind that we would be going until I read today about the potential air corridors. We have already booked a couple of nights away for New Years, have plans for Boxing Day etc. I was probably naive in thinking we’d just be able to change the flights over to next year, she said to hold off until 3 weeks before we fly (so 5th December) and if we haven’t heard anything to ring back. But now I’m slightly panicking that the flights will go ahead and that they’ll (the airline) will expect us to be on them.

I can't see it happening. NYC isn't a nice to be right now or any time in the near future. Everyone has a mask on even outside and no one gives a stuff if you think you should be exempt.

AnyFucker · 05/10/2020 10:15

Not happening, I am afraid

nosswith · 05/10/2020 10:17

More chance of Mr Johnson not being Prime Minister by Christmas.

zafferana · 05/10/2020 11:25

I wouldn't worry too much OP. Ask yourself this: are the UK and the US getting on top of the Covid pandemic? The answer would have to be a resounding 'No' at this point, so I don't see either country opening up to more travel in the near future. Mr Trump isn't about to let people from this country go the USA for holidays and I suspect that Boris feels much the same way, because there is no political capital to be gained and plenty to be lost!

unmarkedbythat · 05/10/2020 11:27

Not quite zero, but not much above.

DulciUke · 05/10/2020 11:36

I live in upstate New York. Cases were very low here compared to the rest of the U.S., but have started rising rapidly, probably due to schools and colleges opening. Admittedly, Boxing Day is months away, but I wouldn't risk/count on a trip to NYC.

Jocasta2018 · 05/10/2020 11:48

Chances on going? Bugger all I'd say...
Even if you could go, what would happen regarding travel insurance? Would you even get health coverage for Covid issues?

HoldMyLobster · 05/10/2020 13:05

I’d be surprised. Also if they do allow you in you may have to quarantine. New York is one of the states limiting who can come in, along with most of New England.

HoldMyLobster · 05/10/2020 13:06

Glad to read this. This makes me more likely to visit NYC.

Its frustrating having to wait though, I understand that (I was booked to go to California in July) but I'd say it's very very unlikely that holidaymakers will be flying.

TimInRuislip · 05/10/2020 13:11

Thanks everyone. I’m really hoping it doesn’t go ahead, I wish the airline would just cancel the flight or let us change but I appreciate it’s not at all as easy as that. Never thought I’d be keeping my fingers crossed that I can’t go to New York 😂

OP posts:
movingonup20 · 05/10/2020 13:12

Unless this vaccine is rolled out faster than expected I doubt it but airlines won't cancel until nearer the time

Therealjudgejudy · 05/10/2020 13:22

Very unlikely OP. I spent last Christmas in NYC and cannot believe the difference in the world in less than a year!
I hope you have a lovely Christmas at home with the rest of your family though.
