Baby's temp showing at 33.6

DS is just coming up to 6 months, he had a nap this morning from 10-12 which is unheard of, we then had a bottle at 12 ish and when I put him down to play he was moaning so I picked him up at which point he started acting tired again.

I thought he felt a little warm on his head so decided to test his temp, I took it with 2 different ear thermometers and one showed 34.1 and the other 33.6. He normally runs at about 35.8 on these thermometers.

I'm not sure if it's something I should be worrying about, other then being cranky and sleepy he seems fine. Should I be worrying about this ? Tia

I know when my DS's temp was below 35 (can't remember exact details) we phoned 111.

They had no appts so told us to take him to A&E.

He was fine and nothing to worry about (I think the Nurofen had done too good a job) but you can't really take a chance. Especially if you think thermometer is fine.

kirinm · 04/10/2020 14:08

Definitely worth a call to 111 in that case OP. Sorry for the confusion with the temps.

meow1989 · 04/10/2020 14:13

Babys ear canals are little and it can be hard to get an accurate reading from the ear thermometers due to this. I would go by an underarm one. If still low call 111 for advice. If baby is unable to wake or floppy, 999.

Call 111. My newborn was in hospital for a week with suspected sepsis and a low temp and quick breathing were the only symptoms. He's only 6 months, better he's seen by a doctor.

whataballbag · 04/10/2020 14:37

111 straight away he needs to be seen ASAP. Low temp is often more worrying than high and the cold hands and feet are red flags too.

Verybookish · 04/10/2020 14:38

111 now

Newjez · 04/10/2020 14:53

You don't want to muck about with sepsis. I would visit a&e.

noblegiraffe · 04/10/2020 14:56

Ear thermometers don't work properly on babies. Try an underarm one first.

Purplewithred · 04/10/2020 14:59

NHS Sepsis advice - as a precaution do call 111. Possible source of infection + generally unwell + low temp + cold extremities + worth it to be on the safe side. Can you count how many breaths he is taking per minute too?

AntiSocialDistancer · 04/10/2020 15:00

Please call 111

RepeatSwan · 04/10/2020 15:00

You've checked the thermometer works - it does.

You've checked your readings - consistent.

If the child has a low temperature you should seek medical help urgently.

lunar1 · 04/10/2020 15:05

Your thermometer seems to be working, so I would get advice ASAP.

Furbs · 04/10/2020 15:06

Agree with PP's. Better to err on the side of caution.

EezyOozy · 04/10/2020 15:43

My daughter had a temp of 34-35 after her mmr and they sent an immediate ambulance when I called 111. Hope you're baby is ok! Thermometer is clearly working.

fatisnotafeeling · 04/10/2020 16:16

Thank you all I called 111 and they asked me to take it again, I had put the heating on and an extra layer of clothes on him and it was up to 36.1 so they have asked me to keep an eye on him for the time being as he isn't particularly unwell if it drops again then to go to A&E with him.

Hows baby today? Flowers

fatisnotafeeling · 07/10/2020 10:25

@AntiSocialDistancer well we've gone from one extreme to the other, last night he had a temp of 40oc which did come down with calpol.

I am pretty sure it's his teeth that are causing these temperature problems but I have ordered a home corona virus test (no one else is poorly in the house though) I'm pretty sure it's not that but thought I better be responsible and get him tested and stay in until we know. Luckily DH works from home anyway and the kids are super happy about having some time of school for a few days.

I hate this time of yr because no doubt this will not be the first time this happens Confused

RepeatSwan · 07/10/2020 10:31

At their age I would want them checked at 40.

Hope all is ok.

Seeline · 07/10/2020 10:33

Both are extremes of temperature is one so young. I too would want them checked.

OverTheRainbow88 · 07/10/2020 10:38

I would call 111, low temp is a sign of sepsis, which shouldn’t be left unchecked. Hope all
Is ok

midsummabreak · 07/10/2020 10:46

Can you take him to hospital to have the reason for the low then very high temp medically assessed, the sore reddened ingrown toenails are likely to be infected, if so he needs antibiotics and that can not wait . They can do a coronavirus test too

OverTheRainbow88 · 07/10/2020 10:48

I agree with @midsummabreak

An infection without antibiotics could lead to sepsis. I wouldn’t leave this, I would get it checked.

MissRabbitIsExhausted · 07/10/2020 12:39

I think you need to call your gp, I thought at that age a temperature of 40 would need to be looked at? Hope everything is ok Thanks

kirinm · 07/10/2020 12:45

I think I would probably be calling 111 (and not be fobbed off) if my 6 month old had a temp of 40C. (I was recently admitted into hospital due to a constant temp of 40C).

AntiSocialDistancer · 07/10/2020 13:10

Please please call 111. How is he doing?

I took my obviously teething baby in when he had a high temp for a few days... raging ear infection, nearly burst his ear drum poor thing!!

I think you baby needs to see a doctor just for a good check up Flowers

Any sign of reduced wet nappies, lethargy, non blanching rash call 999 Flowers
