What do hot flushes actually feel like?

evenflo3 · 03/10/2020 17:24

Just that really - for a few weeks now I've suddenly been getting very hot in the face as the early evening kicks in.

Naturally I thought Covid first but don't have an actual temp just a red hot face and eyes!

Could this be Peru menopause

AnyFucker · 03/10/2020 17:29

Peru ? Grin

I am out the other side now, thank Christ

With my hot flushes, I didn't actually go red in the face. I felt heat from my neck upwards, awful temperature intolerance and sweating.

evenflo3 · 03/10/2020 17:29

Lol - Peri Menopause!

I'm three months into surgical menopause and my hot flushes feel like someone has turned a fire on inside me. I suddenly feel really hot, sometimes with clammy skin but I don't feel hot to touch. I've got one of those cooling dog mats which I put it's the freezer then draped over me when it happens,

How long did the heat last for @AnyFucker?

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 03/10/2020 17:42

At each occurence ? About 10 minutes or so.

How long did they happen for ? A couple of years Angry

alfagirl73 · 03/10/2020 17:43

When I get them it feels like a sudden surge of heat through me - and like I have to get to cool air IMMEDIATELY eg. it could be the coldest day ever, but when a hot flush comes on - I don't care - I need to be outside. It also comes with a sense of panic for me.

YorkieTheRabbit · 03/10/2020 17:45

I don’t go red in the face but I am drenched in sweat, face, neck arms and chest, even the back of my hands are wet Hmm oh the glamour

evenflo3 · 03/10/2020 17:51

Hmmm this is sounding very much like they are hot flushes. Joy!

Putting the pieces together it may also explain my poor sleep and relentless irritability.

I've never had a menop hot flush but I've had hot flushes for other reasons all my life. They seem to rise out of my chest into my face I feel dizzy & maybe sweaty. So far stripping works for me to cool things down.

There was one time 2 yrs ago I just had to throw up, which is a way I can react to any overheating. That passed within 20 minutes, thank goodness.

Readandwalk · 03/10/2020 17:52

Fire rising from chest to face. Furnace like. Sweating clammy. Like a surge. Lasts about ten minutes. Sweating heavily. Often accompanied by anxiety. Immediate need to cool down. About ten times a day.

evenflo3 · 03/10/2020 18:00

Definitely accompanied by anxiety / panic too.

Fridgeandkitchen · 03/10/2020 18:03

For me it starts in my stomach. Like an intense heat that then spreads throughout your body. It goes all over and usually a red face, sweaty forehead, clammy hands and basically, I want to strip off. A bit difficult in the office. Passes in about 8-10 minutes. Can happen several times a day.

evenflo3 · 03/10/2020 18:06

I really appreciate all of your replies thank you. I was feeling very anxious and feel reassured to an extent.

I have 'probable long Covid' and immediately jumped to it being because of that but menopause seems much more obvious when I think rationally.

I feel slightly panicky and struggle to get my breath. I then feel the heat rising from my chest and rushing up to the roots of my hair. I take off as many clothes as I can and still be decent. I then run with sweat and I feel it dripping down my spine, face and chest - even my fingers sweat! My face and chest go a very attractive red beetroot colour. After a few minutes it disappears and I end up shivering as the sweat evaporates. I have these a dozen times a day. It's worse at night. I sleep on a towel to absorb the sweat.

I'm in my sixties and I have had these flushes or power surges for over 10 years. Such fun.

2bazookas · 03/10/2020 18:20

Hot hot hot chest neck face.

Very noticeable to other people (they commented !) my face would go bright red and I POURED sweat off my forehead and chin, running into eyes, down chest between breasts , horribly dripping off my head onto my desk/work whatever I was doing, hair soaked, glasses all steamed up, top half of clothes soaked, pillow soaked at night.

Back then you could get high dose evening primrose oil on prescription and it helped a lot. No longer available free on NHS.
Sistedtwister · 03/10/2020 18:28

With me it's my ears that burn and a very sweaty chest and neck. Less frequent now after 5 years. I think I've been lucky with the symptoms. Not pleasant but not as bad as they can be

ThatsHowItStarts · 03/10/2020 18:38

I'm 48 nearly and been having night sweats for about 3 years. These have ramped up this year. I have to have just a sheet when I sleep or I wake up soaking and freezing!

This last week I've been itching all over. So I googled and apparently there are 34 main symptoms of menopause (itching is just one) which is bloody massively unfair! 😭

Any Fucker apparently night sweats are hot flushes but at night. Did you get night sweats too or just the hot flushes? I have night sweats if I sleep under a duvet. And I'm getting the odd hot flush during the day.

And you say you had them for 2 years? My gp said I could be peri menopausal for 5 to 10 years!

Did they trail off or stop suddenly? Christ 5 years? Why do women have to do EVERYTHING! (periods, pregnancy losses menopause) and it takes ages and longer as we age. My gp (male) was quite amused at my shock that it lasted so long!

Redcrayons · 03/10/2020 18:46

Mine feels like my whole head is on fire, for a few minutes, then I return to normal. Usually only get them on waking up, and sometimes feel a bit dizzy as well.

Night sweats are different for me. I just wake up drenched in sweat, don’t feel particularly hot though. Sometimes I have to change as my top will be soaking.

Crocky · 03/10/2020 18:50

It feels like I imagine a kettle would feel. A sudden and rising boiling from inside. I don’t sweat during these but I have suffered badly with night sweats. These tailed off last year.

beenrumbled · 03/10/2020 19:26

Rising wave of heat and redness from my chest up to my face. Accompanied by a rise in anxiety and feeling of panic. Heart rate rises then i break out in sweat and can shiver with cold as the flush subsides. Get them day and night. Sleep on a chillow. I'm only getting them 10 to 15 times in 24 hours now so after 2 years they are reducing in frequency.

Paranoidmarvin · 03/10/2020 19:36

Mine isn’t so much hot flushes. Mine is more that my body core temperature has been shifting up about 20 degrees. I’m always hot. I was sat here this morning with the window wide open. Lashing it down with rain and cold outside. Yet I was sat there for ages with a fan on my face trying to cool myself down.
This summer had been awful for me. Was hoping when the weather cooled it would get better. But no. I’m still sweating. And it doesn’t really subside either. I’m hot all the time. Had some anxiety attacks over the last year. And so many other little things.
My period lasted for over a year. Yes that is not a typo. I have an annoying not very much period for over a year. This can go on for 10 years. Just great.

ThatsHowItStarts · 03/10/2020 19:43

Would you recommend the Chillow? I've been looking at them. Do you use it every night? And do you eventually get used to it and it stops working? How long have you had yours? Sorry for the quiz! Grin

It's a joke isn't it! My gp said I could be prei for 10 years so does that mean I'll be fully menopausal for another 10?? Shock I know everyone is different but ball park? What a crock.

ThatsHowItStarts · 03/10/2020 19:45
