What do hot flushes actually feel like?

Just that really - for a few weeks now I've suddenly been getting very hot in the face as the early evening kicks in.

Naturally I thought Covid first but don't have an actual temp just a red hot face and eyes!

Could this be Peru menopause

Lol joking aside

I used to imagine it must feel like you are just really overheated.

In fact for me it felt like you're actually on fire! Unbelievable heat and burning skin all over.

Luckily HRT helped. I was only in a medically induced menopause from endometriosis surgery and following treatments. I'm sure I will get the real thing soon.

I got off with mild waves of what initially seemed like nausea. By the time I realized it was a hot flush it was subsiding. Yes yes to the urge to run outside but again too short lasting to do anything. Honestly only 2 night sweats ever.
All done and dusted by early 50’s.
I just reminded myself how much nicer the flushes were to periods, how I liked that more than wet pads or puddles in the bed.
Yup, I embraced the flushes. Anything is better than a period.

@DivisionBelles I am about to go through surgical menopause on the 15th. How long does it take to feel somewhat normal after? Are you on HRT?

@Bellag79 I had a total hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy at the beginning of June because I had early stage endometrial cancer. I've been told I'm not allowed HRT, so trying to manage symptoms with some lifestyle changes.

My surgery was laparoscopic and I was only in hospital one night. I needed painkillers for the first 3/4 days, but after that I found it was fine without. I taking short walks after a week, and by around 6 weeks post op, I was walking around 5k a day. I was off work for nine weeks in total - physically I recovered really well and had no complications, but I found it tough mentally as my diagnosis shock came as a bit of a shock. I'm 48 and apparently quite young to have had it. Luckily I need no further treatment though although I am being investigated for a possible genetic link.

There's a great Facebook support group - Hysterectomy Sisters, that I got loads of advice from. The important thing is to listen to you body and not overdo it. I did a couple of times and boy, did I pay for it the next day!

Good luck, hope it all goes well.

I’m another who seems to have been getting off lightly: I just get the odd hot red face here and there, not body; although, like a PP, my whole body thermostat seems to be bumped up a notch or two as I’m never cold and have lots of central heating battles with cold DH.

When the hot face strikes, few splashes of cold water and I’m fine.

Bellag79 · 04/10/2020 09:28

@DivisionBelles thank you so much and I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis but its great to hear you are recovering well.

I am having an open full hysterectomy and bowel surgery. I have put in a request to join the Facebook group so will have a good read through there.

Hope everything continues to go well for you.

Shouldbedoing · 04/10/2020 09:33

To the poster with the year long period/bleeding, I hope you've consulted your GP about this. It shouldn't be ignored. And any post menopausal bleeding should ALWAYS be investigated.

Gorseandbroom · 04/10/2020 09:34

I'm in Peri, it feels like I'm an oven and someone has turned the thermostat up really high.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/10/2020 09:46

I no longer move from room to room, I move from fan to fan. I have a face fan mentioned by PP too, for when I’m out and about but I imagine what with Covid now, people would be less than understanding of me fanning my face and potentially spraying my droplets around in a ten foot radius. No matter, I’ll just stay in - I’m too bloody tired anyway from all the constant waking up from being too hot, taking duvet off, getting cold, putting it back on again, getting too hot repeat Ad Infinitum.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 04/10/2020 09:59

For me it was just a one or two minute burst of heat feeling and I took off my cardigan then it was done.

Paranoidmarvin · 04/10/2020 14:13

@Shouldbedoing I did. Yes. I have had a scan. All is well. It’s just this crap. And could last for years. I have internal issues from having my son years ago. So I can have anything inserted. So just getting on with it is my only option.

Terralee · 04/10/2020 14:19

I keep getting night sweats so bad my pj top & pillow are drenched in sweat (yuck).
Even though I don't have the heating on.

I'm 44 & take the mini Pill Cerazette so I don't get periods.
My mum had the menopause at 53.

janj2301 · 04/10/2020 15:23

Only had them for a couple of years, as did my mum. Mine always felt like opening an oven door, only my face got hot, never had night sweats either, lucky me
