MN horse racing fans tell me your favourite moments

At the end of a disappointing season for flat racing topped off for me by an almost-trip to the St Leger, the going at Longchamp is too soft for Love to take on Enable which I was looking forward to

Cheer me up MN racing fans with your favourite moments where you cheered in that extra special winner or accidentally backed the right horse

My favourite racing moment was Mr Mulligan winning the Gold Cup over 20 years ago now. He had been a tip from somebody I worked with at the beginning of the jump season and had spent most of it crashing through every fence. After snatching defeat from the jaws of victory where he almost made it to the end of the Ayr Gold Cup before falling, hopes were not high for Cheltenham. However somehow we kept the faith and all my team at work had a fiver on him at 20 to 1. We all nipped downstairs to William Hill and cheered him home with our hands only slightly over our eyes as we couldn’t bear to watch.

What’s your favourite racing moment?

Can't remember the year or be bothered to look it up, but Garrison Savannah was leading the Grand National by about ten lengths, and Seagram somehow took the win by a couple of inches. I had Seagram in a sweepstake. 90 or 91 I think.

I don't actually find horse racing that interesting but I always watch and have a flutter on the Grand National.

@Okokokitsout I'm not the one racing in to a discussion with a 6th form debate to spoil a conversation about sport.

See you later in the milk aisle.

They shoot the horses. They kill the baby cows. They mince the male chickens.

No nerves. Just life.

Some great memories here. I’d forgotten Dawn Run’s gold cup. What a beautiful mare she was too.

@Chocolatedeficitdisorder

I just love those delightful moments when a horse breaks a leg and tries to stand up but falls over. It's especially thrilling when they bring the vet's van and put up the screens so that the public can't see the execution.

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Was just about to say similar. Disgusting sport with thousands of health animals shot for no apparent reason except they don''t meet the grade. all in the name of sport. Disgusting.

It might be 6th form as in really basic cos it's true.

On your other points. That's why I don't eat meat or dairy. But in all honesty for those who do (because that diet isn't cheap) they're a difference between killing animals for entertainment and killing animals for food. Which humans have always done. You're getting arsey because you know it's unethical. I'm not the person who has to live with that.

The 2019 figures make for grim reading:

186 horses died as a result of racing
145 were killed in National Hunt (jump) racing
41 were killed in Flat racing (on All-Weather and Turf surfaces)
52 British racecourses had at least one death

Really not arsey mate.

I came in here for Sports chat. You came in for a student protest. So you're vegetarian, whoop.

I was accused of pretending it doesn't happen. I don't. I just see it as part of the sport. I eat meat. The meat and dairy industry is cruel, far worse than a life of good food, good exercise, a few races and a bullet.

I'll admit to not caring, but I'm not ignorant of it nor harbouring some deep shame because I love the races.

Bordelescott's second Nunthorpe win was really special. Local trainer and a horse I'd followed from the off.

Also glad I got to see Frankel.

Bryony Frost on Frodon in the Ryanair was another great moment.

Always love seen Bristol de Mai run. Even though he's getting on a bit, he's so exuberant and it's great to see him jump.

Libby's Dream coming home at 14/1.

What a great thread - I'm off to start a few of my own:

What's your favourite fox hunting moment? Do you prefer it when the dogs rip the fox to shreds in plain sight or when the terriers pull bits of it out of its set along with its babies?

Which is your favourite part of bull fighting?

Badger baiting - fav moments ?

DENMAN03 · 04/10/2020 19:32

Start your own thread then. Really not interested in your views.

Definitely Sprinter regaining the Champion Chase, still have it recorded and watch it regularly...close second is the adorable Thistlecrack pinging round Kempton, if only he’d stayed sound
