MN horse racing fans tell me your favourite moments

At the end of a disappointing season for flat racing topped off for me by an almost-trip to the St Leger, the going at Longchamp is too soft for Love to take on Enable which I was looking forward to

Cheer me up MN racing fans with your favourite moments where you cheered in that extra special winner or accidentally backed the right horse

My favourite racing moment was Mr Mulligan winning the Gold Cup over 20 years ago now. He had been a tip from somebody I worked with at the beginning of the jump season and had spent most of it crashing through every fence. After snatching defeat from the jaws of victory where he almost made it to the end of the Ayr Gold Cup before falling, hopes were not high for Cheltenham. However somehow we kept the faith and all my team at work had a fiver on him at 20 to 1. We all nipped downstairs to William Hill and cheered him home with our hands only slightly over our eyes as we couldn’t bear to watch.

What’s your favourite racing moment?

I just love those delightful moments when a horse breaks a leg and tries to stand up but falls over. It's especially thrilling when they bring the vet's van and put up the screens so that the public can't see the execution.

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Ilovetolurk · 03/10/2020 15:24

For me it was cheering in St Nicolas Abbey in Dubai at the World Cup meeting where he was running in the big turf race.

Weird place to watch racing as you can’t have a drink or a bet. We spent the day in the stand surrounded by Japanese racing fans there to watch the big Japanese hope win the race.

We were literally the only people in the entire stand cheering in Joseph O’Brien and St Nicolas Abbey as they coasted in. My favourite winner ever Smile

Truth hurt?

Really @Chocolatedeficitdisorder bit sick tbh if that's something you enjoy. Not something I'd admit to Biscuit

coldgraybrix · 03/10/2020 15:33

I've always loved horses and used to work with them, but never really been into racing much. I was asked to go to the races with some friends, and while there I was very taken with a horse called Rough Quest. There was something special about him.

Anyway, the following year, I noticed that he was a runner in the Grand National. So for the first time in my life I went into a betting shop. I didn't have a clue what to do or how to place a bet; the woman behind the counter was very condescending and smirked at me when I asked for help. I bet £5 to win at 9-1, and boy oh boy, did I wipe the smirk off her face later that afternoon when I went in to collect my winnings. Grin

AuntieJoyce · 03/10/2020 15:33

Ah, St Nicolas Abbey I remember watching him as a lovely two-year-old he was so impressive.

My horse broke a leg just messing about in his field.

You know fuck all about horses, so jog on, there's a love.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 03/10/2020 15:49

You know fuck all about horses

Not the case. I rode for years and owned a horse.

I like animals and don't support any sports where the efforts, pain and death of animals is secondary to the 'excitement' and money.

tortoiseshell1985 · 03/10/2020 16:10

how many can I choose please?? I will try and condense the list so many
Desert Orchid Gold Cup 1989 and all his King Georges in fact. He used to literally run every Saturday, different times then!
Kauto, King George (all of them!) esp the last one and the year he won by 30 lengths. And his second Gold Cup
Enable, any, but third King George and the 2019 King George duel with Crystal Ocean
The lovely, great One Man, esp when he finally got to win at Cheltenham.
Sea the Stars, and his Arc win.
not overly taken with tiger roll sorry Tiger but the fences now aren't the fences Red Rum had to tackle to win the National three times
Dawn Run's Gold Cup

villainousbroodmare · 03/10/2020 16:12

At the moment the late great Pat Smullen is very much on the minds of all Irish racing fans, and his 2016 Epsom-Curragh Derby double on Harzand for Dermot Weld was very exciting and richly deserved.

tortoiseshell1985 · 03/10/2020 16:14

Terrible news about Pat Smullen. So very sad.

villainousbroodmare · 03/10/2020 16:51

He was an absolutely lovely man.
Thinking about great racing moments over the years, to me there is something so special about a great mare, more so than any other horse, and in particular a chasing mare. Dawn Run was special, Annie Power, Quevega, and on the flat Zenyatta was unmatchable really. I have terrific memories of Istabraq and Tom Foley's Danoli, a nation united behind a horse.

DENMAN03 · 03/10/2020 18:28

I loved Sprinter Sacre and him coming back from his illness to win the Champion Chase at Cheltenham is my favourite sporting moment ever .

percheron67 · 03/10/2020 18:46

Desert Orchid, Gold Cup. Black Caviar winning (Ascot) here, Red Rum, and so many other wonderful souls.

FreeGlib · 03/10/2020 18:59

Some lovely memories here.

Don't worry about @Chocolatedeficitdisorder, clearly the sort to take a shite in the Tesco meat aisle to make a 'statement'.

FreeGlib · 03/10/2020 19:00

Also, Hedgehunter ♥️

Okokokitsout · 03/10/2020 19:06

When they murder the horses after a fall. But have the decency to but a screen up so we don't have to see it. Best. Moment. Ever.

Okokokitsout · 03/10/2020 19:07

So do horses not get killed after a fall sometimes? Has that never happened? If you're going to like this shit at least be honest and say you don't give a fuck animals die for your entertainment. Rather than pretending it doesn't happen.
flindorama · 03/10/2020 19:17

I ugly cried when Sprinter Sacre came back and won that Champion Chase. So emotional.

So many I can hardly choose but other stand out moments for me were Viking Flagship's Champion Chase in 94, when he jumped the last alongside Travado and Deep Sensation. I adored Lochsong and Frankie, especially her first win in the Abbaye. And Persian Punch's jockey club cup when he looked beaten.

FreeGlib · 03/10/2020 20:32

I don't pretend it doesn't happen @Okokokitsout, at no point have I done that.

Stay edgy though.

So you just don't care then?

If edgy is not wanting animals to die for my entertainment I'm staying here. Its interesting you feel the need to attack me because I'm clearly hitting a nerve.
