ADs crave hotel breakfasts garnished with phallic strawberries

Oh for the good old days of a breakfast buffet.

Back when you could make plans and reasonably expect them to happen. When you could turn up spontaneously and browse or linger at your leisure. When you could meet whoever you like and give them a hug

But until those days return, here's some more AD chat about life, the universe and phallic fruits...

Thats ridiculous.

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind

I've been reading about life expectancy and the fact that at 65, I have a higher life expectancy than someone 40 years younger, which makes sense even if it does seem counter intuitive. I kept putting my life expectancy in as my current age and I have to get to 104 before my chance of living another year becomes less than 50%. Though clearly the chances currently of getting to that age are quite slim.

Anyway it made me wonder what my chances were each year and I found this

annual death risk

So at 65 to 75 I have approx 1.5 chance of not seeing my next birthday.
But I only have a 2% chance of dying of Covid IF I catch it.

And my chances of catching it are minimal since I am retired, meet up rarely and only with other retired (and careful) people plus my son and daughter both of whom work from home and shop max once a week.

It was back in March or April, so the numbers might be slightly out of date now, but Prof Spiegelhalter said (on More Or Less) that for any given person, their chance of dying, if they caught Covid, was about double their chance of dying over the next year. Which for me is a helpful piece of context.

what is she aiming for here?

for every pub and restaurant to close for good within the next 6 months? because that is all she is going to achieve.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 07/10/2020 17:14

I don't understand. How is closing restaurants at 6 going to make any difference.
And who's going to go sit in a pub with a coke and a packet of crisps.
Won't people just gather at home to drink?.

JamSarnie · 07/10/2020 17:18

I wouldn't pay for a evening meal if I couldn't have a glass of wine with it. The point for me if I am going out is to choose nice food and different drinks than I can get at home.

I suspect pubs might as well close their doors.

This rubber stamps the reason why i started posting on these AD threads. The utter hypocrisy from across the C. board.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 07/10/2020 17:24

If alcohol reduced your ability to fight covid, or alcohol consumption was seen to make symptoms worse, these restrictions would make more sense. In reality, its trying to lockdown people to work and home only.

I hate it. I keep typing and deleting on the various pro-lockdown threads "yes, yes I do think we should let all the grannies die if it means all the younger people have a normal life." But that would make me a bad person.

But yep, i feel like I've given enough.

110APiccadilly · 07/10/2020 17:29

A thought has just struck me. All those who think we should lock down until some unspecified date when there will be a vaccine, etc, just in case, because a single death is a tragedy and worth going to immense lengths to avoid... they're going to be really cross when they find out about QALYs, and how NHS funding for drugs works.

I saw that this morning.
I just rolled my eyes and thought why on earth is every random issue 'BUT WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC' and people screaming the sky is falling in, but you dare suggest cancer treatment is being held back and is killing people or that people with dementia are deteriorating and dying alone and confused and the only response you get is "well if the health system got overwhelmed itd be worse because covid covid covid" I honestly can't see why people are reacting so strongly to some stuff but not giving a shit about things that are fucking killing people.

HeIenaDove · 07/10/2020 17:47

some people on that board have been screaming to the heavens about how its the general publics fault for not washing their hands enough but are strangely unconcerned when people cant wash their hands due to having no water. Tells you all you need to know.

Exactly.
Dowser · 07/10/2020 18:07

Just trying to catch up.
I’m sick of fighting on the fb groups I’m involved with.
Especially my town one where so many but not all are as thick as mince.
The tide is gradually turning but you get the odd person spouting if only people stuck to the rules
Well that gets my goat because people did stick To the rules in lockdown because there was nowhere to go.
No one was driving. Hospitality was shut.
We have miles and miles of coast line and weeve had few deaths per head of population .

I keep fighting the fight and try to educate them but the odd one gets through my defence system and I come out with profanities

Ibake · 07/10/2020 18:13

@110APiccadilly can't tell you how many times I've explained QALYS and NICE to them all. Also, have they not yet realised that they're not getting the vaccine if they're

MissEWeatherwax · 07/10/2020 18:21

I’m so sad about Scotland. Why don’t they stop alcohol sales in supermarkets etc. And make people drink in a controlled environment. In my city the students are just buying alcohol from supermarket at 10pm. I am crying again. I miss my parents.
I hate my life, work and home, what sort of life is that.

HeIenaDove · 07/10/2020 18:23

Exactly Alcohol can be bought from supermarkets anyway and drunk in groups at home. I dont get the logic.

Yep. Not having water for days is just something you can suckup, nothing to do with covid but you should still wash your hands 50 times a day to stop "me" getting It! Thick as mince.
justasking111 · 07/10/2020 18:27

Nicola S is a sneaky bitch, pubs can be open 12 hours a day but no alcohol sold. As one wag said so it will be a packet of cheese and onion crisps with a FREE beer for £3.50. This will mean no financial aid because she has not shut them down. Someone said the house parties in Glasgow have to be seen to be believed these days.

The barstewarding welsh are infecting us in the hospitals it has just been on the national news. Go in for one thing and get a dose of covid gratis. 23 deaths linked to these hospitals and 127 cases. So it was not the selfish public who were spreading it but the bloody NHS.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-54452779

The same thing happened in Wrexham hospital a while ago they tried blaming other things but then had to admit it was them spreading it.

Stopping alcohol sales in Scotland’s supermarkets will send me over the edge!!!!!!!

I’m sorry you’re sad but that is not the answer. Stopping these stupid lockdowns is the answer.

Reedwarbler · 07/10/2020 18:51

I think on the covid board there are a lot of people who think no-one should die at all from covid (but other causes of death are perfectly acceptable). I read with amazement about mother's spraying their children with dettol when they get home from school. What?!
This holding out for a vaccine for themselves and their children is naive in the extreme. In their eyes there is a mythical day when everything will become okay because everyone has been vaccinated and we can get back to Tuscany, Brittany or where ever, as if nothing ever happened. As I have mentioned before, the infrastructure is currently not in place to mass produce a vaccine anyway. The glass vials, the refrigerated trucks needed to transport it - nothing is being manufactured or organised at the moment with regards to this .(Christ, I hope Grant Shapps isn't in charge of transport!)
Being in my 60's with a few minor health problems, I would be perfectly happy to risk assess my own life re covid and take a bit of a back seat if things for the under 40s/50s could get back to normal, and life could get back to normal in general. I am not particularly worried about getting it either. If it kills me, it kills me, but that is very unlikely statistically. I so resent being babied and bullied by the goverment. At the moment oblivion seems a better option than a life of nothingness.
I sincerely hope the Scots rebel about the latest crackdowns.

TheOrchidKiller · 07/10/2020 19:01

In the spirit of Marie Antoinette, "If there is no water to wash your hands with, let them use alcohol gel!"

I've been in a care home when the water has been shut off due to burst water mains & it's not pretty.

Am alternating between feeling numb and wanting to scream FUCK OFF!
Saw a dog in the park, bounding with joy. That did cheer me up, it looked so daft and happy.

Taswama · 07/10/2020 19:04

Can someone help with legal advice please?
The bubble has burst at DS school and he is at home. The letter says they are recommended to self isolate. Is this legally binding or not as it hasn't come from T&T? He obviously won't be going to school but wondering if we go for a family walk...

MissEWeatherwax · 07/10/2020 19:11

Sorry @WouldBeGood, was just playing devil’s advocate.
I feel where I am this is worse than normal lockdown. The dr has just stopped my DM’s prescription. Telephone appointment in two weeks, it’s so good, she’s going deaf. Good luck.
Lucky it’s something we can buy from chemist, probably not quite right dose, but better than nothing. Will leave in bag at her door.

MissEWeatherwax · 07/10/2020 19:13

My DD’s bubble burst and she has to stay home/ garden. And not go in public areas. So I take that as no walks.

TheOrchidKiller · 07/10/2020 19:30

Yeah, unfortunately I think they do have to stay indoors/garden. I'm dreading it happening here. Have had a chat with DS about how he'll deal with it. He is into home workouts & good at occupying himself.

DH will be ok, I think.
I'll rage and be in a foul mood but get on with it.

DD is the one I worry about. Being furloughed sent her mental health crashing, & going for long walks got her through it. I've saved up some craft activity kits for her to do. But mostly I suspect she will sleep a lot.

In public health terms, isolating makes sense. For mental health, it doesn't. I feel for anyone having to do this.

amicissimma · 07/10/2020 21:01

Hello, Dowser. Good to see you again.

WouldBeGood, don't worry - I can't believe a smuggling operation from England wouldn't be set up before you could say 'What're you having?'
