I need to buy a bottle of whisky for someone who usually drinks Bells. What is a similar type but a bit more high end please? 🙂

Jura Journey is a good step up - as PP said, avoid anything too high in ABV/cask strength and anything peaty/smoky. Way too challenging.

A few suggestions here tor monkey shoulder, but that's bourbon so would be very diff to bells.

Glenmorangie is great as a step up. Widely available in supermarkets. It's Scotch which is what I think you're after. (Jamesons also lovely but Irish, some people prefer to stick with Scotch or Irish: whisky or whiskey!)

Used to love whisky. Still do but somewhere along the way it's started to give me banging headaches so I just can't drink it any more

AngelOfTheSilence · 03/10/2020 07:28

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned Johnnie Walker.

Double black is a firm favourite but black is still an amazing drink.

I have been drinking dark rum recently but I may need to pick up a bottle of whisky with the weekly shop later 😋

Haig Club is blended like bells and comes in a lovely bottle which would be a really nice gift. You can definitely get it in the supermarket

PurBal · 03/10/2020 07:46

I would be careful about erring out of Scotland. DH is a big bourbon drinker whereas I prefer scotch. So we have both in the house. I don't mind Jameson with ginger beer or something, I don't mind it neat either tbh. The region can make a big difference though.

Bertyb7 · 03/10/2020 07:46

Oh or agree with PP- Johnnie Walker is a great shout!

Horsemad · 03/10/2020 07:49

Still mulling it over. 🙂

My DS who drinks an occasional whisky with the Bells drinker, suggested a couple that are similar to Bells according to the list provided by @FeminismIsForALLWomen - Balvenie and Dalwhinnie. He also suggested Glenfiddich.

Any thoughts on any of those please? 🙂

Just asked my husband actually as he is a massive whiskey fan and Johnnie Walker Red or Black are on special offer at Sainsbury's until Wednesday this week (he is factoring in a special trip apparently 😂) £20 and comes with a free glass.

PurBal · 03/10/2020 08:02

Dalwhinnie was my father in laws favourite. Rather than spending on something they may not like how about trying a good tasting selection? Master of Malt (I don't think my links are working) do "Drinks by the Dram 12 Dram Whisky Collection" or "Regions of Scotland Whisky Tasting Set". They'll all be good and you may find a winner.

PurBal · 03/10/2020 08:03

I realise I have no idea of your budget... sorry if I'm getting carried away.

Horsemad · 03/10/2020 08:05

@PurBal sadly I need this for tomorrow (was sprung on me last minute, unfortunately), or I'd have gone for a taster selection.

DH is usually a Bells drinker but likes Ballantines

Blueberrycreampie · 03/10/2020 11:04

My OH likes scotch whisky. Someone gave him a bottle of Jameson's Irish whiskey and he hated it! It's very different.

clpsmum · 03/10/2020 11:05

Monkey shoulder is always a hit with my whisky loving friends x

TheSpottedZebra · 03/10/2020 11:16

Bells is quite smooth and sweet - it's an easy drink so maybe find something along these lines.

So maybe to: Dalwhinnie, Monkey Shoulder, Chivas, Jamesons, Glenfiddich.

Def no to Johnnie Walker, Auchentoshan, Ardbeg (!), . All to much.

More Bells is really not a bad idea.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 03/10/2020 12:27

Are you looking for an Irish whiskey or a Scottish whisky (note the difference in spelling). Jamesons is Irish, never tried it but I’m sure it’s good. A really smooth tasting whisky is Aberlour, it’s a Speyside whisky so less harsh than some of the island ones such as Laphroaig (which I personally like). A very popular Speyside is MacAllan which is one of my favourites, also Balvenie. All available at most supermarkets. I tend to avoid anything that starts with the word “Glen” as they can be a bit bland and marketed at tourists. If I had to pick one as a present, I’d go with MacAllan.

Planesmistakenforstars · 03/10/2020 13:24

cheeseycharlie Monkey Shoulder is definitely not a bourbon. It''s a blended Scotch.

LeslieYep · 03/10/2020 13:38

Haven't rtft, bit monkey shoulder is a lovely, sweet blend of 3 single malts. Not too pricey and lovely straight, with ice or water.

AlwaysLatte · 03/10/2020 13:48

My stepsons like Haig, I always make sure we have that in when they come.

Oldraver · 03/10/2020 16:50

Penderyn is a lovely drink and quite mild so if they are not used to the more peaty stuff a good in between

Horsemad · 04/10/2020 18:42

Thanks for everyone's help with this.
I went to Asda and their selection was a bit rubbish!
Ended up getting Chivas Regal and the recipient was thrilled with it. 🙂
