Whisky drinkers.

I need to buy a bottle of whisky for someone who usually drinks Bells. What is a similar type but a bit more high end please? 🙂

Tricky thing with bells it’s a blend. The higher end ones are single malts which have more distinctive flavours. I find auchentoshan is liked by most, I’m not a whisky fan but even o like it

FeminismIsForALLWomen · 02/10/2020 21:06

Personally I would say Oban but these guys disagree Grin

Auchentoshan Three Woods is gorgeous - it is aged ten years in oak, two years in sherry barrels and a final year in an oloroso barrel, which gives it a rounded smoothness.

A blend my late father liked was Chivas Regal, but I don’t know how it compares to Bells. I’m not much of a whisky drinker myself.

Horsemad · 02/10/2020 21:16

Thank you for the suggestions 🙂 I need to be able to grab this from a supermarket, is Auchentoshan available from the supermarkets?

Failing that, having looked at FeminismIsForALLWomens* list, I may go for Glenlivet. 🙂

Jamesons is a great 'next one up'.

Horsemad · 02/10/2020 21:22

@Squiffany, funnily enough, Jameson was the other one I'd thought about - only because I bought it for a gift for someone else years ago!

Chivas is the only blend I would drink neat. Much nicer-
English whisky is lovely and light and easy to drink.

Horehound · 02/10/2020 21:30

Yes people who like bells tend not to care so much about single malts...

Horehound · 02/10/2020 21:31

My husband loves whisky and I read out your post. He said he wouldn't bother getting anything different than what they usually drink.
Fair point.

Dreeple · 02/10/2020 21:36

All whisky drinkers (and practically all drinkers) like 10-year old Glen Grant.

Just remember there’s not much in a bottle, nowadays.

Janevaljane · 02/10/2020 21:38

Monkey Shoulder! Delicious! A blend and available in supermarkets.

Bbdm1984 · 02/10/2020 21:48

My dp is a whiskey drinker and if he is feeling a bit flush or i am buying a present it would be haig club or monkey shoulder. He drinks bells any other time

DGRossetti · 02/10/2020 21:50

I'm partial to Glen Moray in Chardonnay casks ... a bit niche but divine.

FraughtwithGin · 02/10/2020 21:53

My late mother loved a glass of whisky.
Bells would have been classed as "cooking whisky" in our house, when I was growing up.
I like 10 year old Ardbeg, but it is quite dry and very peaty, so not to everyone's taste.
The reason I like Ardbeg is that is non-chill filtered, and with no colouring.

Horsemad · 02/10/2020 21:57

Haha, so many to choose from! 😆

Janevaljane · 02/10/2020 22:01

I'm a bit addicted to Monkey Shoulder. I also like a really peaty single malt, but when you want something easier and more comforting nothing beats monkey shoulder. It's my favourite drink!

BlueBirdGreenFence · 02/10/2020 22:04

Get Bushmills. Definitely a more premium version of Bells. Yum!

whojamaflip · 02/10/2020 22:10

Just spoken to a friend of mine who is a bit of a whiskey connoisseur and his advice would be Jamesons if their usual tipple is Bells. He says don't go for a single malt as a) they probably won't appreciate it and B) it will blow their head off!

No idea as I can't stand the stuff - gin on the other hand.........

Etinox · 02/10/2020 22:12

2 bottles?
Horsemad · 02/10/2020 23:30

Thank you @whojamaflip, I'm erring more on the side of Jameson's. It's so hard, not being a whisky drinker myself - I'm a gin fiend! GinGinGin

everythingisginandroses · 02/10/2020 23:49

You can't go wrong with Jameson's, really. If you'd rather buy Scotch then Glenlivet is a good step up.

ShinyPie · 03/10/2020 05:01

Glenlivet 12Yr Old! It's also on offer at Tesco at the moment. Failing that, Balvenie is worth considering.

I'd avoid anything heavy on smoke and peat as they tend to be quite divisive (Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Talisker). They're the only whiskies drunk in our house though.
