Burry

mateysmum · 02/10/2020 13:35

Burry

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 02/10/2020 13:35

Berry

Hailtomyteeth · 02/10/2020 13:40

Berry. I go there quite often, or did before Covid. Burry is acceptable, too.

Ah, but how do you say Salford?

Chloemol · 02/10/2020 13:46

Burry

Bluetrews25 · 02/10/2020 13:48

Salford = Sol-ford.
Saying Sal-ford ( Sal like in Al Murray) hurts my ears.

Bumpsadaisie · 02/10/2020 13:50

People from Bury say Burry (in fact I think they say something in between Berry and Burry) but most English people would say Berry.

Bury St Edmunds is Berry St Edmunds.

Bury your Dead! Is Berry.

BikeRunSki · 02/10/2020 13:51

I say Berry, but I’m from the other side of the Pennines. I know how to pronounce Slaithwaite though.

Flaxmeadow · 02/10/2020 13:53

Bu-ray or Buh-reh. Seems to be how locals say it

Not Berry.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/10/2020 13:55

natives usually say Bury to rhyme with flurry. But people even just a couple of miles south say Berry. Everyone understands and no-one corrects anyone, so I think it's just an accent thing, as Bury is the southern point of the East Lancs accent, and quite different to a Mancunian accent just a few tram stops away.

HipHopBanzai · 02/10/2020 13:58

Locals say Burry. People from just a couple of miles down the road (and the rest of the UK) say Berry.

x2boys · 02/10/2020 13:58

I'm From Bury born and bred ( now live in Bolton) I say Berry but many locals say Burry .

aToadOnTheWhole · 02/10/2020 13:59

Berreh.

Sol-fud.

Figmentofimagination · 02/10/2020 14:00

I'm from west lancs and I say burry.

moglovesquotes · 02/10/2020 14:00

It's like a mix here (grew up a few miles away) like ber-ry

BarbiesWorld · 02/10/2020 14:03

Aaah but @BikeRunSki do you know how to say Linthwaite? 😉

LooseMooseHoose · 02/10/2020 14:04

East Lancs and I say Burry too

HattonsMustard · 02/10/2020 14:05

Best black pudding on their market, according to my Dad!

We said Berry as in rhymes with merry but we didn't live there, we lived near and close enough so my Dad could go and get his black pudding every couple of months.

Either was Burrry to rhyme with flurry or Berry to rhyme with merry is correct.

LadyEloise · 02/10/2020 14:05

Thanks all.
I've never had such a quick response.

@wowfudge

I'm from Manchester and say "Berry". Same as for Bury St Edmunds. Locals say "Burry" but as I don't have the same accent I'd sound like I was taking taking the mick if I did.
Yes same here
FredaFox · 02/10/2020 14:08

Live in Manchester and everyone says Berry but my Burnley born mum says Burry

@BikeRunSki I’ve had many a good day drinking in Slaithwaite, I still don’t get why it’s pronounced like it is! 😂

CaraDuneRedux · 02/10/2020 14:12

Half way between berry and burry! (Don't know quite how you'd describe the vowel sound - I grew up in the NW). I think most people would hear what I said as "berry" but the should is slightly different from how I'd say, eg, blackberry.

Yubaba · 02/10/2020 14:12

I’m from Manchester but live in Bury and I say berry, it depends if you have a Manchester or Lancashire accent. Lancashire is burry and Manchester is berry.

CaraDuneRedux · 02/10/2020 14:13

The should? The sound!

Flaxmeadow · 02/10/2020 14:14

Buh reh
Brat-fud
