pants get bigger as you get older, right?

Just bought myself some new undies in M&S. Such excitement for a friday morning.

In my 20s and late teens I would have been straight at the thongs, or the tiny little bikini briefs. A decade later, after a couple of pregnancies, those were a thing of the past and it was firmly into the mini briefs. Now i'm in my 40s. Recently had an abdominal hysterectomy and needed a pair of knickers which didn't have a seam anywhere near my (hefty) scar. Midi knickers all the way.

Was browsing the knicker shelves and wondering when I'll switch up another gear and catch myself thinking that the full briefs which come up to your armpits look comfy. And what comes after that? Full on corset or a woolly vest too?

Definitely! I’m 56 and like big knickers. I like my rather large stomach to be warm!

Having said that I have a friend the same age as me who has gone the opposite way! She is now all into skimpy thongs whereas she used to like big knickers too.

NewYorkNewYorkNewYork · 02/10/2020 10:22

Yep

I'm 6months PP and still rocking the c section pants. I look absolutely hideous however great to keep the hubby away 😉

CMOTDibbler · 02/10/2020 10:23

Full briefs are a thing of joy. Treat yourself and you won't look back!

I'm wearing thermal leggings and long sleeved top out of the M&S Heatgen range today. I am comfy (lovely brushed interior) and cosy, on a manky day and I care not about what S&B would say!

Ah, I was reminiscing about an electric blue, mesh thong I had as a teenager the other day. Good times Grin the thought of that on my episiotomy scar now though...

RaininSummer · 02/10/2020 10:24

Yep giant pants are great. My Mum's friend calls them 'harvest knickers' because 'all is safely gathered in'.

BrazenlyDefying · 02/10/2020 10:26

Thongs are just instruments of torture. Agree that they're not compatible with episiotomy scars.

Is there a cut-off lower age for browsing the Damart catalogue?

Grin love harvest knickers
Yes big pants are the new black

RickOShay · 02/10/2020 10:28

I wince when sorting DD’s underwear Grin

pollypork · 02/10/2020 10:29

I've been wearing granny pants/girl boxers since I was a teen. Can't stand VPLs, discomfort & a cold back!

SenorFrog · 02/10/2020 10:32

I'm 53 and still wear briefs, If has never occurred to me to get bigger knickers. I'm not sure how I feel about them, I think hmmm maybe and then recoil.

pointythings · 02/10/2020 10:45

I'm 52 and have just replaced all my pants with full briefs. It is bliss. My DD2 (17) is also a fan of the big pants. We should allow comfort to be the priority. After all if we are in a situation where tempting undies are needed, we can always plan for a quick change and a big reveal.

lifestooshort123 · 02/10/2020 11:17

Big pants and big bikini bottoms here. All tucked away and behaving.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 02/10/2020 11:23

Sorry going to buck the trend, 51 here and thongs all the way for me. Big knickers just don't sit right on me thongs are perfect though

VinylDetective · 02/10/2020 11:26

I always hated cheesewire up my bum. It’s big knickers all the way now. Any fool can be uncomfortable.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/10/2020 11:32

No but I have no scars to accommodate.

pollypork · 02/10/2020 11:36

big bikini bottoms here

Controversially my bikini bottoms are pretty scant but I don't need to worry about keeping the cold out a warm beach!

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/10/2020 11:44

I think a lot depends on shape. I've always been ample of buttock even as a slender young thing, and thongs just cheesewired my arse. But my older (now 65) friend swears by thongs, and she has much less buttock than me.

I have always favoured the no-vpl of large pants. I hate that little triangle of elastic you can see through jog bottoms or leggings when people are wearing small pants. But whatever keeps them comfy.

I am practically knee to boob elastic now. There is nowhere to go from here.

StarlightLady · 02/10/2020 11:58

40s here and no scars to concern me, so I am unable to comment from that point of view. Whenever l buy a new bra l get 2 pairs of matching knix, in different styles if possible.

To supplement that l usually go for brazillians and l have a few thongs which are comfy (size up when buying and go for something with stretch).

I have some French knickers for “floaty days” but that is the nearest l’m going to get to big knix for a long time to come.

And on those hot summer days with a long dress it’s sans knix!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 02/10/2020 12:17

Nope, I'm 52 and still wear thongs as I find them more comfortable than knickers. I always have the problem with "creepage", where the leg holes gradually move around the arse cheeks (IFSWIM) and I hate it. Constantly wanting to rearrange them! I've tried shorts but found them uncomfortable, and I just find massive pants unappealing. At least with my thongs they don't move once on so I don't even feel them, and there's no VPL so they look better under my clothes.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/10/2020 12:18

I've never worn a thong. Giant briefs every day of my life. Poor DH!

pollypork · 02/10/2020 12:24

@Zaphodsotherhead wonder if that's it because big pants don't give me VPL & I too hate the visible triangle.

Your last point 🤣🤣

Whenwillow · 02/10/2020 12:24

Im very short waisted so big knickers come to just under my quite ample bust. They are really comfy but there is literally an inch between knickers and bra. So I wear briefs or those little shorts ones. I did recently go up a size despite not gaining weight, and that feels lovely (and doesn't look ridiculous) I guess it all depends on shape.

Lockdownseperation · 02/10/2020 12:27

I think there maybe an inverted bell curve. My 4 year old like big knickers so she doesn’t get a wedgie! In my 20s I used to wear thongs. I now approaching 40 and my knickers are giant ones I bought when I was pregnant and expecting a c section. Now my baby is a toddler I really should do something about losing weight.

ImFree2doasiwant · 02/10/2020 12:27

Dc1 is 5 and im still enjoying the soet of pants i wore post c section. I have had another pregnancy, and episiotomy in the meantime though.

BrazenlyDefying · 02/10/2020 12:30

Totally agree that as you get older it's a lot more about comfort than fashion. I have a 15 year old DD who goes out shivering without a coat because she doesn't have one which goes with her outfit. Or all the kids you see walking home getting soaked in the rain without a brolly or a coat. Or young women wearing heels so high they can't walk, or a dress so tight they can't sit down in.

Fuck that. Comfort all the way.
