Classical music that gives you goose bumps

I was just listening to Elgar’s Cello concerto in E minor and got the inevitable goose bumps and a lump in my throat. Was trying to think of others that have the same effect, parts of Rachmaninov variations on a theme of Paganini (the 18th variation I think) and parts of the Planets suite and almost anything by John Williams. Anyone got anything else for my goose pimply play list?

I love so many of these! Except the lark ascending, sorry. I've played it in orchestra and it is extremely dull. I listened to the Romanian national anthem for the first time today and it really gave me goosebumps. So powerful and yet so poignant.

Brahm's lullaby. Not the derived nursery rhyme, but the original piece in full. I find it lovely and relaxing.

It's already been mentioned but Allegri's Miserere is so beautiful it makes me emotional, along with the goosebumps.

I love core ngrato sung by Andrea Bocelli - gives me goose bumps every time ( and love when the conductor holds his hand at the end.)

Also Cavatina (the Deer Hunter theme.)

I thought I was the only one! I really dislike the Lark Ascending and will switch the radio off if it comes on. I think it is dull in the extreme and it goes on for ages - I think the bloody lark is probably in orbit by the time it is over. But everyone seems to love it so I have never previously dared say that I loathe it. Never heard the Romanian anthem but I must confess to having a soft spot for the Russian one. Slightly bizarrely my teenage son currently has it as his phone's ringtone.

Préludes, Op. 28 No. 15 in D-Flat Major, Raindrops; Frédéric Chopin

Heard this on The Crown (Edward Heath played it) and had to google it - really dark and moody, building up to the "drop" (sorry, not sure what the classical musical term for this is!!!) - sent shivers down my spine!

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

Mahler 5 adagio

Shostakovich 5..3rd movement

monkeytennis97 · 01/10/2020 03:55

Sorry, Mahler 5 Adagietto

By Maurice Ravel, "Daphnis et Chloe, Suite No. 2" and "Pavane pour une infante défunte."

Agree with ginghamtablecloths on "Schindler's List."

The theme to "A River Runs Through It," especially as it's used at the end of the movie when the elderly Norman Maclean says in a voiceover, "I am haunted by waters." I sob every time.

Verdi's requiem, particularly Dies irae, for some powerful goosebumps!

MadauntofA · 01/10/2020 06:28

And a big yes to the pp who mentioned Arvo part

MrsAvocet my teenage son loves the Russian national anthem too! We have to play it every time we are in the car. It is very rousing I must say.

MuseumOfYou · 01/10/2020 07:23

O Soave Fanciulla from La Boheme, especially the echoey bit at the end.
Libera Me, from Verdi's Requiem, the quiet piece in the middle.

Lovely image, made me smile!

Adagio from Beethoven's Empreror Concerto. All those rolling arpeggios.

AgentCooper · 01/10/2020 07:31

Catalani’s La Wally (Ebben ne andrò lontano) which was in the film Diva.

Schubert’s Ave Maria

Michael Nyman’s soundtrack to The Piano

@JovialNickname I’ll need to look up Bocelli doing Core Ngrato, I’ve only ever heard it sung by Uncle Junior in the Sopranos but it was beautiful!

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 01/10/2020 07:31

Definitely Elgar’s Cello concerto. Also Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 in A Major

chomalungma · 01/10/2020 07:46

I see all the Lark Ascending folk are out!! A regular Classic FM winner.

I adore Variations on a Theme by Thomas Tallis...by Ralph Vaughan-Williams. It just takes me to another place.

So many beautiful pieces on here.

Jules Massenet: Meditation from Thais.

cinnamongirl1 · 01/10/2020 08:51

I cried like a baby at Massenet's Meditation from Thais the other day

cinnamongirl1 · 01/10/2020 08:52

ha wildrosie I didn't actually see your post!

WildRosie · 01/10/2020 13:39

Meditation is one of my ten classical favourites, along with Gymnopedies 1 and 2 and Jupiter from The Planets.

WildRosie · 02/10/2020 07:54

I should also mention O Fortuna by Carl Orff for its dramatic, apocalyptic menace.
