Classical music that gives you goose bumps

I was just listening to Elgar’s Cello concerto in E minor and got the inevitable goose bumps and a lump in my throat. Was trying to think of others that have the same effect, parts of Rachmaninov variations on a theme of Paganini (the 18th variation I think) and parts of the Planets suite and almost anything by John Williams. Anyone got anything else for my goose pimply play list?

@Gingernaut - Have to agree - that Vaughan-Williams piece is sublime.

Pachelbel's Canon in D, I love, especially if played with a bit of pace.

Lully - March for the Turkish Ceremony - so rousing! (I have requested it at my funeral.)

This is probably my favorite though -

The Lark Ascending.

I was just going to say that @Clawdy ! I've always loved it. We had it played at my baby's funeral service - we couldn't think what to have played and it suddenly hit me and I couldn't believe I'd not thought of it sooner! I've only been able to listen to it twice since, mind

Montagues and capulets from Prokofievs romeo and juliet.

Such a sense of unyielding power.

Adagio for Strings - such a beautifully mournful piece of music.

Someone I know had this playing at her wedding, whilst people were sitting down which made me Hmm

Elgar's Salut d'Amour (cello rather than violin) - I am not a godly person, but listening to that is a near religious experience for me.

StillMedusa · 29/09/2020 19:21

Cavalleria Rusticana... played at my Dad's funeral and will be played at mine. It gives me goosebumps it is so beautiful...
Especially when Georges Pretra was conducting.. how much is he IN the music

timtam23 · 29/09/2020 19:23

Schubert - Impromptu no.4 in A flat major
Dvorak - 9th Symphony "From the New World" 2nd movement (Largo)
Smetana - Vltava, from Ma Vlast. In my first year of secondary school we studied Ma Vlast in music lessons, the teacher really made the stories behind the music come to life. I especially loved Vltava and I asked for a cassette of Ma Vlast for Christmas (early 80s so it was cassette or LP only!)
