Would you work if you didn't have to?

Sitting here with a virtual pile of very uninspiring admin to do and daydreaming...

Would you work if you didn't have to? For instance if you and the family had a paid off mortgage, good pensions and a windfall. (I'm imagining 1-2 million in the bank). I think I'd give up work and study for a postgrad degree just for fun, but I wonder if I'd feel differently if I like my (quite well paid but dull) office job.

God no!

Chersfrozenface · 29/09/2020 13:14

Good grief, no!

emotionalbutterfly · 29/09/2020 13:16

Yes and I did. And once I've had my baby I'll be off back part time.

MothershipG · 29/09/2020 13:16

Absolutely not, I'd get a puppy (or 10)

DiscombobulatedAf · 29/09/2020 13:16

I would but only part time for a charity or something. I’d get bored otherwise so two days a week doing something fulfilling and low stress would suit me

caughtalightsneeze · 29/09/2020 13:17

No, I'd be so bored.

Penny31 · 29/09/2020 13:17

Nope! I’d happily do the school run, clean the house, sort the washing, meet friends for coffee, go the gym, spend time with the kids, cook and bake all day every day forever more!

HowFastIsTooFast · 29/09/2020 13:17

No I wouldn't work in that position, but I would do voluntary work to fill my time and feel like I'm still useful. I volunteer quite regularly now for sporting events and am always a bit staggered by how reluctant some people are to help out, even though they happily participate in similar events and couldn't do so without the volunteers.

Fatted · 29/09/2020 13:20

For the love of God, no!

I don't understand these people who say they would be bored at home on their own all day.

AvoidingRealHumans · 29/09/2020 13:23

I wouldn't do what I do now but I would love to have a little cute coffee shop that sells amazing cakes and light dishes so hopefully I could do that and work there.
I would definitely volunteer somewhere once or twice a week rather than spend my whole time indulging myself though.

Ardnassa · 29/09/2020 13:24

Yes. Love my job, love my industry. Feels like I am making a difference (though maybe I would drop to 4 days a week and spend an extra day on my music).

CremeEggThief · 29/09/2020 13:31

Maybe part-time, as I've had extended periods when I haven't worked, and I don't have a lot of close friends and family around. So 2 days a week would be ideal.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/09/2020 13:39

I've been known to Wink
It's easier not having to work while the DCs still need wraparound care as DS1 struggles with long days and needs quiet time at home. I may well make myself avaliable to work in a few years when they need me around a bit less.

JoJoSM2 · 29/09/2020 13:40

I don’t have to and don’t work. Life isn’t boring. There are always friends and family, hobbies and all sort of little projects or charity you can focus on.

AuldFox · 29/09/2020 13:41

Yes! I don’t have to work as DH earns enough for our lifestyle and my money just ends up being invested, but I really enjoy it!

Shakespearsister · 29/09/2020 13:49

I inherited the large Victorian Villa we live in and I'm the beneficiary of a substantial trust fund and yet I work for the NHS in an ITU dept. Why, because I love what I do and I'm bloody good at it plus the kids are old enough ( 18, 16 and 14 ) to look after themselves until my husband gets home. We also have a cleaner so I don't do the domestic Goddess thing although I'll cook on my days off. I'd get bored doing nothing.

evilharpy · 29/09/2020 13:49

I'd teach fitness classes for fun and jack in my day job.

ExpectTheWorst · 29/09/2020 13:51

Not doing paid work does not equal doing nothing.

Boredbumhead · 29/09/2020 13:53

Hell no. I'd give up my University job and breed golden retrievers.

Humbersider · 29/09/2020 13:54

Not doing paid work does not equal doing nothing

Absolutely I'd be ashamed to have such a limited life that the ONLY thing of meaning in it was paid employment. Pitiful.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/09/2020 13:55

Definitely not. I enjoy my job, but there's a hundred different things I could in the daytime to occupy myself. Life is short.

DrCoconut · 29/09/2020 13:56

I'd do lots of useful/fun things but not be tied to a 9-5 job. Wish my lottery numbers would come up

planplan · 29/09/2020 13:56

No way.
I'd get a dog and go for long walks and write my novel.

Peacenquiet2 · 29/09/2020 13:57

I don't have to and I do. Id go stir crazy sat at home while the kids are at school all day, only so many afternoon teas you can go for

helpmegetoutofthispickle · 29/09/2020 13:59

I hate my job and my lifestyle right now so under those circumstances I would be happy to never work again. I was furloughed for four months and despite not being able to do much I loved being at home everyday with the kids and cooking, crafty and lots of adventures walking around. I feel so depressed and trapped now I am back at work.
