Did anyone else have a rainy wedding day?

We're getting married on Wednesday and the weather is going to be horrific.

We'd planned for everything to be as outdoors as possible as it's a beautiful place, but I'm not getting my hair wet or ruining my shoes 😂

Got some big umbrellas and we'll look round the venue tomorrow, but I really wanted pictures by a nice lake and things like that.

Any tips on how to make the best of it and still get some nice pictures? Just the two of us so Jo guests to keep dry

Not rain but gale force wind. We have a lovely pic of DH with my veil wrapped around his head!

Greenteandchives · 28/09/2020 12:38

Yes. The only wet day in an otherwise scorching summer which is still talked about today. It poured all day.
Everyone remembers my wedding. The vicar said that it was lucky, and so many people had been praying for rain.
I’m still happily married.

Bright sunshine the day before my wedding, and the day after. On the day itself it drizzled all day, broken only by bursts of proper rain.

I was worried about it raining beforehand, and my mother spent most of the day fussing about my hair, but on the day itself I was having such a brilliant time that I honestly didn’t care about the rain. I swapped my shoes for cheap flip flops, which were totally ruined, and black mud soaked up the underskirt of my dress as far as my knees. It came out at the dry cleaners.

Yes mine did. We didn't care too much and still traipsed out into the field next door for photos and all over the courtyard of the venue. The venue offered to put up a gazebo for our guests but they only had one back-garden sized gazebo and we had about 100 guests. Some had brollies, most didn't care and got stuck into the booze and canapés regardless.

Made for some funny photos- my husband trying to rescue my satin shoe which got stuck in mud, husband carrying me across a puddle etc etc, both in hysterics. The photos look epic with huge rolling omnipressant black clouds behind my white dress! Photographer did amazing job.

The hem of my dress (and then some) was absolutely caked in mud and pretty black by next morning but the dry cleaners worked miracles and it came up like new! It was a dress that clearly knew how to party!

Honestly you can't control everything on your wedding day, just embrace it and enjoy it.

Your wedding day is our anniversary 😍

It chucked it down on our wedding day! But apparently cloudy skies are better for photos than bright sunshine!

You just have to go with it, really!

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/09/2020 12:56

It rained on my wedding day. I had all the photos taken on the altar steps, church porch, and at the reception which had a stage which was useful as the large group shot had everybodies face in view-some guests sat , kneeled or stood on it. None of my photos were taken outdoors. Good thing too because not only did we have my dress to consider but several kilts and a relative/piper who was in full Scots guards uniform including the bearskin hat.

Delatron · 28/09/2020 12:58

I think you kind of have to expect rain in England in any month on any day! And not be disappointed if it happens.

Ours was October so I was sure it would rain. We planned most stuff indoors. It did only rain for about 15 minutes though and the light was beautiful.

Went to a wedding in June once where they planned for it all to be outside. No acceptance that it might rain so no plan if it did. It was 13 degrees and rained all day. Bride was so upset it ruined her day. I just don’t understand why in this country you would ever expect the guarantee of nice weather! Plan for rain and if it doesn’t it’s a nice bonus!

These stories are making me happy. I've raked out my ancient, bright pink converse and DP has bright blue trainers.

@Margo34 happy anniversary for Wednesday!

The forecast for my wedding day was torrential rain and wind. I bought myself a cashmere cardigan from M&S in case I felt ridiculous with bare arms. Right enough, the wind and rain woke me up on the morning of my wedding day. I had to duck into the hairdressers. But when I was getting ready the rain stopped and it turned into one of those beautiful autumnal days.

A good photographer will know how to take pictures in the rain with great atmosphere. Although I agree tramping in grass with heels isn't ideal.

Justmuddlingalong · 28/09/2020 13:16

According to the Met Office website it's been pouring here all morning. There hasn't been a drop, so I'd take Wednesday's forecast with a big pinch of salt.

cookiemonster5 · 28/09/2020 13:18

Our wedding day was horrible. So foggy your couldn't see outside the windows so all our photos had to be taken inside. Was still an amazing day and just after our meal the sun broke through and my husband and I were able to run off with the photographer for a few photos alone on a little bridge over a pond in the gorgeous sun. Gave us half an hour alone just the 2 of us after the manic day.

The venue should be able to guide you and the photographer will know where best to take photos. Try not to worry.

ivfbeenbusy · 28/09/2020 13:20

Given how much you will have saved by having the numbers cap I would pay for a photographer to come on another day it's sunny to get the lake photos you want

Peach1886 · 28/09/2020 13:26

Apart from being memorable, your photos are likely to be much nicer if it's raining as the light is so much kinder than bright sunshine - it threw it down all day on our wedding day, my dress got completely soaked and we had to borrow a very un-weddingy brolly at one point...

it couldn't have been more perfect to be honest...just roll with it and enjoy yourselves!

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 28/09/2020 13:29

Best friends wedding was the wettest day I've ever experienced. Everyone got soaked. Everyone sucked it up. The best atmosphere ever. So incredible pictures of he bride and groom in the rain.

I would like to do that but it's 5 hours away from where we live. The staff there are wedding planning experts so I'm sure they'll have a great plan B

Yes torrential rain. We also had a loud crash of thunder just as we were leaving the church and to top it off I also had a bird poo on me whilst I was in the open top car on the way to the church.
At the time I was wondering if it was all a bad omen but we are still together 10 years later!

We had lots of big umbrellas and luckily our reception was in a marquee in our garden which was next to the church so no one got too wet.

Redcrayons · 28/09/2020 15:04

On the bright side, it cuts down on the hanging around for endless photos. More time for celebrating.

loutypips · 28/09/2020 15:05

Yes and I should've taken it as a bad omen not to go through with it! 😂

JorisBonson · 29/09/2020 21:37

It's been a beautiful day today and we have a 50/50 chance of being able to be outside tomorrow... Sun dances please everyone!

Good luck OP, have a fab day and a fab life with your partner.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 30/09/2020 06:50

We have rain on our wedding day (the lakes). We still did photos outside on lake Windermere. The sky looks so dramatic it made for amazing photos - no way we’d have got that on a sunny day. We were lucky as we got a couple of breaks in the rain.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 30/09/2020 06:50

Oh good luck for today x
