How can I make frozen brocolli edible?

Rather than be a wet mush?

Soup

INeedNewShoes · 27/09/2020 19:33

Actually, soup is wet mush so I haven't answered your question but I don't think it'll be possible to bring frozen broccoli back to life as a nice side vegetable so I'd use it differently.

Soup - simmer in milk, with onion and a stock cube. Blitz, add block of stilton. Yum!

ImFree2doasiwant · 27/09/2020 19:35

I've been doing a once weekly online shop, and often fresh veg doesn't last all week so I thought I'd try frozen. It's horrid!

I was hoping to have some with salmon tonight, but soup it is!

Are you keeping it in the fridge OP? I normally get at least full week from fresh broccoli, often much longer.

pawpawpawpaw · 27/09/2020 19:37

Chop finely for pasta (google green pasta sauce) or an omelette (though I guess these are both also wet mush) Smile

pinkbalconyrailing · 27/09/2020 19:41

it should keep fresh in the fridge for a week.

but for the frozen stuff - roast it in the oven or frying pan with a few almond flakes

TheDuckSaysMoo · 27/09/2020 19:42

Use it in anything saucy: curry, chilli, creamy or cheesy pasta etc. It's useless as a standalone veg.

KurriKawari · 27/09/2020 19:42

I sometimes throw it into any pasta dish and works fine.

Ninkanink · 27/09/2020 19:42

Roast it.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/09/2020 19:43

I'd make the last meal of the week something you can shove extra veg into. Stir fry etc

GreyishDays · 27/09/2020 19:43

We tend to be on carrots and frozen peas by the end of the week. Oh and frozen sweet corn.

But some of it does last ok, just keep an eye on it.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/09/2020 19:43

I just put it in a glass bowl and nuke it. The water content in the veg is such that you don't need to add water in it to steam it.

ZarkingBell · 27/09/2020 19:44

Just never buy it again. It's the pits.

I agree with PP - totally useless as a stand alone veg.

TweezerMay · 27/09/2020 19:44

Toss it in a load of garlic puree and cayenne, roast it in the oven. Really nice. Also works with spouts!

Bizzywater · 27/09/2020 19:45

Mash with butter / garlic. Wet mush but tasty

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/09/2020 19:46

Eat it straight from the freezer

Its edible if steamed rather than boiled I found.

NannyR · 27/09/2020 19:47

It works well chopped up finely in pesto pasta and baked in a cheesy pasta bake.

noblebarry · 27/09/2020 19:47

Clearly in the minority here. Just had it for tea with some frozen peas, frozen green beans and quorn sausages and it was delicious. I just put it (all the frozen veg) in hot water in the microwave for 15 mins and drain it. No pepper, cheese or anything.

Trousersareoverrated · 27/09/2020 19:48

We buy packs of frozen veg (Birdseye I think) that come in individual packs that you put in the microwave to steam for 3 mins. They are great if I’m rustling up a freezer meal because I’ve been too lazy to shop. Perhaps some kind of steaming is your answer?

MummytoCSJH · 27/09/2020 19:50

I love it as it is but I also steam it and add it to things and roast it with crushed garlic.

KurriKawari · 27/09/2020 19:53

DD is obsessed with having frozen veg with everything she eats, she cooks it in hot water for a couple of minutes so still al dente and eats it without any seasoning, I leave her to it because at least it means she's having her 5 a day.

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 27/09/2020 19:56

Use it instead of cauliflower in cauliflower cheese.

FrangipaniBlue · 27/09/2020 20:00

I don't boil it again, either in the top of the steamer above the taties for the last 5 minutes or if I don't have the steamer on I just pop it in a bowl of boiled water from the kettle for minutes while I dish everything else up.

It's usually already part cooked so all you're doing is defrosting and warming it through rather than cooking it.
