Rather than be a wet mush?

Under cook it in microwave so it's still a bit hard. Not too bad. Make a ''broccoli cheese''.

Or I bung it in a pasta bake in the oven / with cauliflower cheese in the oven

Another vote for soup or broccoli cheese

Yes. Is that too long?

@noblebarry is 15 minutes a typo? Frozen veg only needs about 3 minutes in the microwave. You can cook a giant jacket potato in 10 mins in the microwave

Flipping heck noblebarry that's some mighty overcooking Grin

Speaking of microwaving veg does anyone do it to a swede? It's beautiful

I do an online shop once a week - I meal plan and the last couple meals always involve things that keep well in the fridge - usually carrots, peppers, leeks, courgettes, cabbage, or I use frozen cauliflower to make a cauli cheese - cook in the pan then 'dry it out' in the oven.

Cripes. This is news to me. I only have a microwave at present ie no oven or steamer and just found 15mins does the trick!!

I have a Waitrose recipe for macaroni cheese that says to add broccoli and cauliflower. I prefer broccoli to cauliflower so double up on frozen broccoli.

Basically it’s baked broccoli with cheese sauce and some herbs.

I steam it and it doesn't go mushy I also do cheese sauce with it.

Roast it with lemon juice and chilli flakes or shove it in a pasta bake

Blitz from frozen with frozen mango and a good slosh of apple juice. Green smoothie - yum!

Or steam it - miles better than boiling it.

Defrost it and chuck it in the compost bin. Buy some seeds and sow them in the compost.

I've only done it in the microwave, as per the instructions. It just held so much water, it was horrible. I'm going to be a bit more stringent with my meal planning. I only have a small fridge freezer so struggle a bit.

I don't have a steamer. I'll look into the veg bags though for emergency veg consumption!

I tried roasting it - it was awful! What do people do to make it delicious and crisp? I put it in at a fairly high heat with garlic and chilis and all the ice crystals just melted and boiled it. It was grey, soft and unappetising.

It must be pure mush @noblebarry Grin But then I like my veg al dente. I would say max 3 mins in microwave. Frozen veg is already cooked, it just needs to be heated through. Even fresh broccoli doesn't need 15 mins cooking! 5/6 mins max.

Get a steamer (saucepan). We have a big one and use it pretty much every day to steam veg of some sort to have with dinner (and have done since we got it 12 years ago). In fact it lives on the hob we use it so often.

StellaGib · 27/09/2020 20:48

I don't have a microwave so just do it on the hob - only takes about 4/5 minutes and I don't find it any different to fresh!

Bin it.

I too have learnt the hard way.

After cooking, which shouldn't take long, make sure it is well drained and dry. Make a cheese sauce to cover it and put in oven or under grill to brown. That would be a nice vegetable accompaniment, lovely with lamp chops and roast potatoes. It's actually the only way I will eat broccoli and generally fresh, not frozen, though I have bought a packet of frozen broccoli and cauliflower florets which was OK. The purple sprouting broccoli is the nicest, I think.
