Ideas needed please

Just wondering what's wrong with Dovedale? Grin

zafferana · 27/09/2020 15:54

Chatsworth (particularly the gardens)
Stanage Edge
Mam Tor and Castleton
Eyam
Matlock

Things to avoid (IMO):

  • Matlock Bath (tacky)
  • Bakewell (horribly crowded)
  • Speedwell Cavern (unless you like long, dark and extremely claustrophobic tunnels)
Lardlizard · 27/09/2020 15:54

Oh nothing we think it’s beautiful, just need ideas for somewhere else !
Thinking maybe the cable cars at Matlock ?
It’s to combine with one day at Alton towers

Are you into walking Op?

Abracadabra12345 · 27/09/2020 15:58

We went to Matlock when it was very hot so went up to the Heights of Abraham on two consecutive days because it was much fresher up there. We loved every minute. Great walks, fun cave tours, and the like.

Matlock Bath has its own charm. I much preferred it to Matlock high street

Fivemoreminutes1 · 27/09/2020 17:17

In the opposite direction, Trentham Estate

Wherearemyminions · 27/09/2020 17:23

Tissington, nice short walks around the village or longer ones on the cycle route (Tissington Trail)

Livingthecovidaloca · 27/09/2020 17:28

Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath was the highlight of our Alton Towers mini-break!

QuitMoaning · 27/09/2020 17:34

My partner and me are just back from a week in the area, never been before.

Crichton Tram Museum was twee but nicely done if you like grams. We are not into trans but still enjoyed it
Carsington water, lots of activities and quite beautiful and not too crowded.
Dove Dale , very pretty and unspoilt
Heights of Abraham : really enjoyed this
Monsal Trail on hired bikes, this was our favourite
Derwent Water : soooo busy at the visitor centre but we walked around LadyBower reservoir (5.5 miles) and we loved it.
Matlock Bath was good on the Sunday as there were lots of motorbikes and my partner loved looking at them.

We are not walkers but still enjoyed the break very much and has inspired us to walk more.

QuitMoaning · 27/09/2020 17:34

That would be trams, not grams or trans

MellieNelba · 27/09/2020 17:41

Eyam is fascinating

Pepperwort · 27/09/2020 17:43

In Derbyshire? Get out to the Peaks and walk.
We often headed for Bakewell - even if it is busy it’s worth it! There’s loads of walks you can go on in that area. Head to the Chatsworth estate, or start at Lathkill Dale and go the other way round. Get a decent map and go through the dales to Monsal Head. It’s a bit late for the well dressings now, even if any did go ahead this year, but just get out there and explore. I recommend circling round and ending up in Bakewell for the bakeries and an obligatory tart.

There’s the caverns too if you’re looking for conventional attractions.

Crikey - if you think Matlock Bath is tacky, don't ever go to Blackpool!

TheOrchidKiller · 27/09/2020 18:20

Ashbourne for tea shops.
Tissington trail- flat-ish bike rides/walking
Tissington itself is pretty.
Baslow near Chatsworth House.

LauraLooDerby · 27/09/2020 18:47

Near Alton Towers you also have Dimmingsdale which is truly beautiful. You don't have to be much of a walker - it's not hard www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/route/3075694/bbc-countryfile-magazine-dimmings-dale-staffordshire

Ashford in the water is pretty
Youlgreave

Walk along the river at Monsal Dale (rather than along the old train line - I think it's called Chee Dale, there are stepping stones there too under overhanging cliffs) www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/route/5011176/bbc-countryfile-magazine-chee-dale-millers-dale-and-wye-dale-derbyshire

Mam Tor is a bit further

Cromford
Black rocks
Crich
Ashbourne

The Cock Inn at Weston Underwood :)

Fudgeytastic · 27/09/2020 18:54

Castleton, especially if you want to walk! It's just stunning and I'm desperate to go back.

Yes, Castleton as well! I was trying to remember what it was called and couldn't, so didn't put it 🤦🏼‍♀️
AdoptedBumpkin · 27/09/2020 19:08

Some lovely villages in the Peaks. I can recommend Tideswell, which really impressed me when I first visited.

QuitMoaning · 28/09/2020 20:38

I was in Matlock Bath on the Sunday and the next day we drove to Blackpool. Do I win a prize for the most tackiness in 48 hours? Grin

In some ways they were the same, in other ways they were worlds apart.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/09/2020 20:40

If you like riding bikes go to Hassop. You can cycle for miles. Nice cafe too.

Anyone mentioned Castleton?

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2020 20:46

Hathersage pool. Outdoor heated pool. Lovely setting. Great cafe! Book online first.

Buxton

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/09/2020 20:50

Bakewell
Chesterfield
Castleton
Chatsworth
Ladybower
Buxton

The list goes on, but that's my highlights

Chosennone · 28/09/2020 20:51

Buxton. Pooles Cavern and a walk through Grinlow Woods up to Solomons Temple. Views across the whole town. There is a Go Ape there too. The Crescent has finally opened after a 30 year wait and is a beautiful building. Love little bars and restaurants behind it and to the side.
Hathersage, Tideswell and Castleton are all gorgeous too Smile

JayAlfredPrufrock · 28/09/2020 20:55

Blue John Mines.

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2020 21:00

Scarthin Books in Cromford
Wirksworth for a potter en route to Carsington. If one is allowed to potter anymore.
