Cheaper stuff that you prefer vs branded stuff?

faithfulbird · 27/09/2020 09:56

Could be anything really. Stuff that works just the same or will do. Could be food, clothes, toiletries or anything!

For me it would be the cheaper vicks/vapour rub you can get in home bargains/Poundland, even the children's versions (by bells). They're both under a pound.

Supermarket own brand shower gels are fine. Aldi q10 face cream is just like nivea.

Aldis Jaffa cakes!

JosieB68 · 27/09/2020 10:10

Lidl’s plum tomato soup, about 40p a tin and so so tasty! Way nicer than Heinz tomato soup

reluctantbrit · 27/09/2020 10:11

Lidl’s cloudy not-concentrated Apple juice. Perfect for mixing with sparkling water instead of buying the expensive one in Waitrose.

I hate the typical concentrated juice taste so that’s a money saver and tastes as good.

Also, Lidl’s single origin milk chocolate.

lazylinguist · 27/09/2020 10:13

Aldis Jaffa cakes!

Came on to say this too. The original Jaffa Cakes' cakey bit is horribly dry and dusty compared with the Aldi ones.

Cheesypea · 27/09/2020 10:17

I only really buy branded tea and coffee, evertlything else is generic. my mum always said you get what you pay for with coffee. Yorkshire tea is non negotiable, were in a hard water area.

shouldhavethoughtthisthrough · 27/09/2020 10:29

Asda's pringles

plunkplunkfizz · 27/09/2020 10:32

Tesco tartare sauce is so vinegary and nice. Much better than Waitrose and Stokes.

charmsofasimplelife · 27/09/2020 10:32

Aldi's Pringles... infact I'm pretty impressed by a lot of the Aldi copies! Their gold tin of hairspray (like the elnett) is really good and I find it to be a better hold than the elnett!

BearSoFair · 27/09/2020 10:42

Sainsburys cheese curls - not as crispy as Quavers but they have more flavour!
Asda Jaffa Cakes
Sainsbury's red label tea bags

Plump82 · 27/09/2020 10:44

I like Asda own tea tree face wash. About the only face wash that doesn't break me out. Also from Asda their own tomato sauce, micro rice, theur cheap and chip bleach which is nice and thick. I love Farmfoods own salted butter. Its usually only something like 2 packs for £1.5!

FlowFlow7722 · 27/09/2020 10:44

Asda’s twix bars

Coatandhat · 27/09/2020 10:46

Haven't tried Aldi's version but Lidl's Jaffa Cakes soooo much better than the originals!

FourPlasticRings · 27/09/2020 10:48

Basically any own brand ketchup. Heinz is grim.

QueenieMum · 27/09/2020 10:54

E45 cream, nothing beats it for everyday use on my dry skin.

HeronLanyon · 27/09/2020 10:58

Sunpat peanut butter rather than any of the organic whole nut type gritty pastes. But then I was brought up on skippy which is actually the best ever.
Own brand mozzarella over buffala mozzarella in this country. If in italy then it’s buffala all the way but it doesn’t travel well.
For certain things only basic white sliced will do. Over and above all of the other better breads in my bun/freezer. Cheese and coleslaw sandwiches being the most obvious.

FizzyPink · 27/09/2020 11:00

Aldi mayonnaise, literally 20% of the price of Hellman’s

AltoCation · 27/09/2020 11:00

Lidl ‘Mars bars’. The caramel is richer and more caramelised in flavour.
Lidl and Aldi ‘hob nobs’ aka chocolate Oaties.
Lidl sensitive roll on deodorant

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/09/2020 11:01

Lidl jaffa cakes (only go in for them)
M&S doritos
Aldi beans
The co op lemonade

powershowerforanhour · 27/09/2020 11:02

Cheapo paracetamol and ibuprofen, absolutely no point in paying for glossy TV ads with a pretty young woman doing a pained expression.

whirlwindwallaby · 27/09/2020 11:09

Aldi coconut milk.
Aldi colombian coffee in the 100g jars, don't understand relatives buying Nescafe, I think it tastes horrible and I boycott Nestle anyway.
Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, or Sainsburys 85%+ (Lidl do 95%) cocoa chocolate, I'm happy with any of those rather than nasty sweet Lindt flavoured dark chocolate.

StormyInTheNorth · 27/09/2020 11:13

Aldi multi surface cleaner with bleach. Better than any other bleach spray. However it also stains clothes. Must be strong to do that though.

Everything's generic apart from coffee, tea, caffeine fre diet cola (I don't drink a lot and like it in a can) and washing capsules

LindaEllen · 27/09/2020 11:20

To be honest, I find that most supermarket own brand products are absolutely fine - and you can save a fair amount if you switch to non-branded for everything in your shopping trolley.

I make a lot of pasta dishes with tinned tomatoes and I find that Asda's version are nicer than the branded one I used to get.

dottiedodah · 27/09/2020 11:21

Sainsburys Red label tea bags ,and their Tomato ketchup is easily as good if not better than Heinz!

PenguinsOnParade · 27/09/2020 11:22

DH loves baked beans and much prefers Morrison's own brand ones to any branded ones. Their ketchup too. It was sold out the other day and we had to get Heinz and it tastes much more vinegary I think.

Basic ingredients like tinned tomatoes, passata, cooking oil, cooking vinegars and salad dressings I tend to get supermarket own ones for too.

I stick to branded for toilet roll and coffee all the time. Lidl do a coffee which isn't too bad but I'd rather just have branded as I still taste some difference in it. We've been using Co-op fair trade teabags recently after getting them in a gift hamper and they've been a lot nicer than I expected. I swore by branded teabags before too. DD's Earl Grey is always Twinings though.

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2020 11:27

Aldi Hobnob alikes

Also much prefer Body Shop shampoo and conditioner to the Wella stuff the salon tries to sell me.
