Sharing toothbrush - is this weird??

OK, it's actually an electric toothbrush with different heads (we've moved to a another country for a few months and one got left behind accidentally). My dp maintains that the little coloured bands at the bottom of the brush distinguish one person's brush head from another,and that it's normal to share the electric handle, making sure your own head is on...

Is this normal?? Do families share electric toothbrushes like that? I am certainly not familiar with the custom 🙈

It's normal, but I would never do it. But I have three toothbrushes just for myself most times. Manual toothbrush, electric toothbrush, and either an extra tooth brush head or extra toothbrush for doing my weekly whitening.

chatterbugmegastar · 27/09/2020 17:35

Mind boggled

So what did you think the coloured bands were for? An art project? Confused

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/09/2020 17:37

Me and dp have done this for 10 years. I bought a really good quality one and we just switch the heads. We use the coloured bands. Made sense to spend 150 on one tooth brush than half that on.

@Fluffycloudland77

We have phillips Sonicare and in the blurb it said one base unit per person.
Well of course they do, lots more sales to be had that way!
Plussizejumpsuit · 27/09/2020 17:41

I suppose we both have good hygiene and we both rinse the handle. We also don't keep it on the charger all the time do that doesn't get gross.

People saying its disgusting. How are you brushing your teeth?!

dementedma · 27/09/2020 17:45

Not normal here. We all have our own.Other people's have toothpaste dribble and spit on them. Yuk.
It also means we are not constantly touching the heads so more hygienic

doctorhamster · 27/09/2020 17:47

Not normal here. What happens if one of you goes away? Do you toss a coin to see who gets to have clean teeth?

Ghostlyglow · 27/09/2020 17:49

Of course it's normal.

ladybee28 · 27/09/2020 17:49

What are people doing with the bottom end of their electric toothbrushes that it's too gross to share?

How far into your mouths are you sticking the thing? Where else are you putting it?!

Mumsnet really is wild... Grin

@LeSquigh

This was discussed on here very recently. There’s quite a long thread about it somewhere.

We all have our own here and would never have thought to share one. None of them have a case so would be difficult to travel with different heads. I don’t suppose there is anything wrong with sharing but everyone else in my house doesn’t seem to think that cleaning off all the toothpaste gunk from the handle is a thing so I would rather have my own!

I should have known there was already a long thread on the subject Grin

You know...I really hadn't thought about it that much 🤔 To my shame

Yes, I'm pink or yellow, DH is green or blue

CassandrasCastle · 27/09/2020 21:11

it's not that I think it's 'gross'...I just thought everyone had their own toothbrush really; with little decorative coloured bands to jazz them up 😏
Mine wasn't v expensive, but I do see the point in sharing one that is. I just don't like the faff of changing the head every time I go to brush my teeth😬 (and yes, I know that sounds ridiculously lazy).

This thread is soooo Mumsnet. NB - some families don't have multiple bathrooms, or even an en suite. There are four of us with one bathroom; of course we share the base of the electric toothbrush! And when we go away... we have an analogue brush. Each. You lot are so funny!

multivac · 27/09/2020 21:15

PS you don't 'change the head' each time you clean your teeth. You rinse the head at the end of each brush, and store it separately. Leaving the head attached? Now that IS icky....

Isit2021yetplease · 27/09/2020 21:21

(Silently wonders if anyone else just shares a toothbrush with their husband.....nope...back under rock...)

CassandrasCastle · 27/09/2020 21:25

Sometimes I leave the head attached after rinsing, yeah. SHIT

CassandrasCastle · 27/09/2020 21:26

I wish we had multiple bathrooms...

ladybee28 · 27/09/2020 21:31

@Thatbliddywoman I googled it!

And it's funny you should bring that up... I have an ongoing idle fantasy that the Ick Brigade on Mumsnet (the ones who wash their towels after every use and shudder at the thought of someone else's toothbrush) all have wild sex dungeons in their houses filled with cattle prods and splash sheets...

multivac · 27/09/2020 21:31

Oh I dream of an en suite. Would totally have its own toothbrush.

chatterbugmegastar · 28/09/2020 06:10

You're forgiven SmileGrinThanks

There are five of us with only one bathroom. We do not share the base. We have our own ones.
BusterGonad · 28/09/2020 07:25

I don't think it's normal, having said that I share mine with my young son, so I'm in charge of cleaning it and keeping it charged and I brush his teeth. We only share as we live somewhere where its hard to purchase such things and the dentist said my son needed an electric toothbrush. I wouldn't share with anyone else and yes, the ends do get grubby, surely when you're cleaning your back teeth it goes quite far back? As son as my son does his own teeth or I come across a decent priced one I'll get him his own.
