Sharing toothbrush - is this weird??

OK, it's actually an electric toothbrush with different heads (we've moved to a another country for a few months and one got left behind accidentally). My dp maintains that the little coloured bands at the bottom of the brush distinguish one person's brush head from another, and that it's normal to share the electric handle, making sure your own head is on...

Is this normal?? Do families share electric toothbrushes like that? I am certainly not familiar with the custom 🙈

Normal for some people but I find it gross. If you can afford £10 for a cheap handle from amazon I would get your own!

BestOption · 27/09/2020 16:04

In your situation I'd be happy to do it (as it's for a limited time & for a good reason) but then I'd share DP's toothbrush is necessary. Christ knows it's not the most intimate thing we share!

But in general, it's a faff I can do without. It's easier to have your own. We have one charger/base in the en-suite & one we can plug in elsewhere if necessary

minipie · 27/09/2020 16:07

We have one each as we often brush our teeth at the same time. And occasionally we go away on our own.

yes, normal.
we have one for the whole family, each has their own brush head.
would be bloody expensive and a great waste of plastic otherwise.

giantangryrooster · 27/09/2020 16:10

Definitely have one handle and head each. So not normal.

catherinep80 · 27/09/2020 16:25

We have an electric toothbrush each, but when DH left his round a family member's house once we did share mine for about a week. Each using our own heads of course! I doubt it's a custom or anything, but it works if you want to do it that way.

BlackberrySky · 27/09/2020 16:27

Definitely not something we do in our house. Everyone has their own brush, head and base.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/09/2020 16:28

We all have our own here.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/09/2020 16:34

We have phillips Sonicare and in the blurb it said one base unit per person.

JuiceyBetty · 27/09/2020 16:40

Yep we share, why not?!

Topseyt · 27/09/2020 16:46

Not normal in this house. We have an electric toothbrush each. I wouldn't want DH or the DDs mucking around with mine and vice versa. To me they are very personal items.

Sojo88 · 27/09/2020 16:52

We used to do it in our family of 4 with different heads. V wasteful and expensive to buy 4 whole electric toothbrushes!

user1493413286 · 27/09/2020 16:54

Normal although we don’t because I can’t be bothered to mess about with the heads every time

LindaEllen · 27/09/2020 16:57

I'm sure it's normal but I can't stand the thought of sharing a toothbrush haha - even if it's just the end you don't put in your mouth.

I know people are different though.

I fell out with my 16yo stepson over this (one of those arguments that ends up being blown out of all proportion) because he'd been to a friend's to sleep over and left his toothbrush in his bag, and rather than walk the two metres to his room to get it, he instead just used MY toothbrush. I was absolutely disgusted, not only at the act, but at the sheer laziness. And he was already in trouble as he'd come home still drunk (after being told not to drink because he has a condition that drinking exacerbates, not to mention he's too young) and was throwing up in the bathroom. So he was puking and then using my toothbrush.

Thank god I noticed his wasn't there, as I told him to brush his teeth to freshen up after puking and he said he'd already done it so I said how can you your toothbrush isn't there .. so he said it's fine he used the pink one.

Absolutely revolting.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/09/2020 16:59

Totally normal. There is only one charging point in our bathroom.

mistermagpie · 27/09/2020 17:04

We do this, the toothbrush itself cost about a million pounds (some fancy sonic number) so I wasn't about to buy two! I'm quite squeamish about sharing stuff generally - I won't let DH have a a swig of my drink even though we've made three children together! But this doesn't bother me really.

FOKKYFC · 27/09/2020 17:04

Of course it's normal. What the hell would be the point of having a detachable head that can be swapped out, otherwise?

dementedpixie · 27/09/2020 17:05

So that you can replace it easily when it wear out?

SimonJT · 27/09/2020 17:05

Yeah its normal, it cuts down on cost as well, we don’t even bother changing the head most of the time.

mistermagpie · 27/09/2020 17:05

I should say we also have manual toothbrushes for travel or nights away.

Stinkyguineapig · 27/09/2020 17:18

I thought this was going to be about the actual brush ....which I would have said gross. We dont have this set up (1 base, separate brush for each person) but I dont think its particularly gross.

AlessandroVasectomi · 27/09/2020 17:23

We have only one power point in each bathroom, so it would be difficult to charge more than one base unit regularly in each bathroom if everybody had their own. I don’t see what is objectionable about common use of the same base unit anyway. I may be unusual, but I don’t put that bit in my mouth. #Firstworldproblems

vanillandhoney · 27/09/2020 17:27

@FOKKYFC

Of course it's normal. What the hell would be the point of having a detachable head that can be swapped out, otherwise?
So you can just replace the head and not the entire brush every time?

I'm with you OP - I know some people do it but I also find it quite gross. Toothpaste and spit don't know to just stay on the bit that goes in your mouth!

Separate brushes and holders here.

dementedpixie · 27/09/2020 17:27

We only charge them when the light flashes to tell us. There is a charging point in each of the 2 bathrooms

LeSquigh · 27/09/2020 17:28

This was discussed on here very recently. There’s quite a long thread about it somewhere.

We all have our own here and would never have thought to share one. None of them have a case so would be difficult to travel with different heads. I don’t suppose there is anything wrong with sharing but everyone else in my house doesn’t seem to think that cleaning off all the toothpaste gunk from the handle is a thing so I would rather have my own!
