Please recommend some wellies for my toddler that won't leak after a month

Toddler DD has to keep a pair of wellies permanently at nursery (covid rules) so she also needs a pair at home for evenings and weekends.

I usually buy her pairs from supermarkets, Boots or M&S for £10 - £15. I haven't generally spent more because her feet grow so fast. But the wellies frequently leak before she's grown out of them. I feel like I spend far too much time and money buying wellies and filling up landfills with them. Once my DS is walking I'll be doing this x 2.

I'm happy to spend more on wellies that won't leak, particularly if I can pass them down to DS as well but I'm worried I'll spend a fortune on a brand name that leaks just as badly (my Hunter wellies cost a lot but we're terrible quality).

How much do I need to spend to get something decent? And where should I try?

We have always bought our kids Hunters. They’re great and last till they grow out of them. If they grow out of them before they’re done in you can sell them on too. My kids wear wellies to trek round fields so they got proper wear rather than just to splash in the odd puddle on the way to the shop. Mine have been going strong for 10 years too! I know a lot of people don’t rate them though.

Stringervest · 26/09/2020 19:53

Thank you. Yes, I'm one of the ones who doesn't rate them based on my own experience but perhaps kids' ones are better. I heard that Hunters used to be brilliant but that they were bought out a few years ago and the quality has dropped in favour of profit.

I'll look into it some more!

I've never bought wellies for more than a few pounds and never had a leaky pair. Are they def leaking, and not just water running down from the top?

Otherwise I recommend the cheapest wellies you can find!

Maybe pick up a pair on eBay for the DC just to see how you find them.

CrunchyNutNC · 26/09/2020 19:54

I always think hunters feel quite heavy, have always favoured cheap and lightweight.

Stringervest · 26/09/2020 19:55

How odd! Maybe it's something DD is doing which is making them leak. I'm reasonably sure the water isn't coming in the top.

John Lewis sell nice looking wellies in bold colours but a lot of the reviews for them say they leak, too!

Aigle are great.

Stringervest · 26/09/2020 19:57

@sherbetlemony never heard of them! I'll have a look.

Look for EVA wellies (the foamy stuff that Crocs are made of). We’ve had some from Demar and Fuzzios that have lasted multiple children and they wear them so much - in and out of the garden all the time and for walks all year round. They’re lightweight, warmer in cold weather than rubber, have better cushioning and seem to be pretty indestructible

The4ks · 26/09/2020 19:57

Our 5 yo has a regatta pair, natural rubber, and are great quality.

Best pair he had were actually Ted Baker that I picked up on sale. He wore them till they literally fell off his feet after nearly a year.

DoubleHelix79 · 26/09/2020 19:57

Ours crocs wellies have öasted a while and are really light and easy to put on

TheMandalorian · 26/09/2020 19:57

Crocs wellies are good. No seams to leak.
Consider a warmer snowboot instead. Decathlon do a fab fleecy, waterproof one in toddler sizes when their ski stock comes in. Better for walking in because they support the foot.

Herdwick · 26/09/2020 19:58

Border wellies.

My two farm kids use them every day for hours and never had a split or leak yet. They are in near perfect condition even after they have been passed down from one child to the next.

Hunters are poor quality these days with an expensive price tag.

Whatthebloodyell · 26/09/2020 19:58

I’ve never had problems with my kids wellies leaking. I’ve bought from jojo, John Lewis and m and s.

Millie2013 · 26/09/2020 19:58

I’ve had Hatley (plus M&S) wellies for DD and we haven’t had any issues with leaks

Or maybe try Jojo maman? We love their snow boots and they get a proper hammering in mud, rain and snow

saussaggessandmasshh · 26/09/2020 19:59

I have never ever had a pair of leaky wellies and my kids abuse their kids like you wouldn't believe.

I buy cheap colourful ones off eBay and Amazon called Leopard, never had a problem with them and I've had 4 pairs used till growing out.

Could water be getting in from the top? Maybe try ones that have drawstrings to pull them right?

Findahouse21 · 26/09/2020 20:00

Dd always has the fur lined wellies from lidl for forest school and wevve never had a leak even when she's been out all day

firstimemamma · 26/09/2020 20:01

Sainsbury's £11 for our 2 year old and no problems so far. Smile

Morsmordre · 26/09/2020 20:02

Both my boys have had their wellies bought from John Lewis and we've never had a problem with them. Well worn in muddy puddles too. Grin

saussaggessandmasshh · 26/09/2020 20:02

Meant to attach. Drawstring Wellies!

Wow, thank you everyone, I didn't expect so many responses! I've fallen down a rabbit hole googling wellies now. Plenty of new ideas!

Bogs neoprene wellies are a bit pricy but very warm and waterproof and can be passed down through two or three kids.

User478 · 26/09/2020 20:13

Decathlon Sailing Boots are really good.

Fairybatman · 26/09/2020 20:14

The best pair we’ve bought were these from RNLI. Nice and wide, bit pricey but supports the charity.

Dunlop are the best. They aren't £££ either
