Please recommend some wellies for my toddler that won't leak after a month

Toddler DD has to keep a pair of wellies permanently at nursery (covid rules) so she also needs a pair at home for evenings and weekends.

I usually buy her pairs from supermarkets, Boots or M&S for £10 - £15. I haven't generally spent more because her feet grow so fast. But the wellies frequently leak before she's grown out of them. I feel like I spend far too much time and money buying wellies and filling up landfills with them. Once my DS is walking I'll be doing this x 2.

I'm happy to spend more on wellies that won't leak, particularly if I can pass them down to DS as well but I'm worried I'll spend a fortune on a brand name that leaks just as badly (my Hunter wellies cost a lot but we're terrible quality).

How much do I need to spend to get something decent? And where should I try?

I bought my dc spotty otter wellies from Amazon and I've been so impressed with them, they're warm and fleecey inside with a drawstring top.

We had this with several pairs of wellies. We came across the khaki green ones you can get from farming/equestrian type stores; they are good and have never leaked. They're not very exciting to look at, but do the job.

Really like our Hatley pair, best we’ve had so far.

Muddy Puddles are fantastic quality

[quote Fairybatman]The best pair we’ve bought were these from RNLI. Nice and wide, bit pricey but supports the charity.

Also bought a pair of these when on holiday in Dorset when I left a pair behind at home for my eldest. My son loved them and also supports the RNLI.

Jojo maman bebe wellies are good

Mountain wearhouse with the drawstring at the top. Ds loves his wellies to the point of refusing to wear anything else and these ones really have withstood a lot.

MaidenoftheSpear · 26/09/2020 21:10

Peacocks! DD has grown through 3 pairs and wore each pair almost constantly - they've been through puddles, walking to and from nursery for 2yrs, forests, mountains etc etc not a leak in sight!

Aigle wellies, avoid Hunters they're too heavy for smalls.

The Joules roll up wellies are good too but Aigle are the best, ours become passed down through various children without any bother and you can get lovely fluffy lined ones too.

OpEd · 26/09/2020 21:28

Snow boots are good too but not for "proper" mud, we have small children and horses at home so over winter boots and kids get a daily mud filled outing.

DS wore his Mountain Warehouse wellies almost every day for a year and they're still pristine, we've just replaced them with an identical pair in the next size up.

Never had an issue with leaking wellies we've had everything from Sainsbury's to Hunters.

Make sure they are high enough up the calf, I'd imagine it's coming in from the top.

SpanielPlusToddler · 26/09/2020 21:47

Crocs wellies are brilliant, never split or leak, light and easy to put on. Mine lasted for my 2 boys who used them a lot and then passed them on to a friend.

SpanielPlusToddler · 26/09/2020 21:48

PS You can get crocs wellies on Amazon.

Timshortforthalia · 26/09/2020 21:49

Another vote for croc boots.

Bellesavage · 26/09/2020 21:53

We found the tread on crocs wellies was awful, any mud and they were just like walking on ice. I prefer muck boots, they're fantastic, warm and never leak but I always buy in the sale as they are pricey

NauseousNancy · 26/09/2020 21:57

I was always having this issue - my girls seem to have skinny legs and the water was coming in from the top. Hunters were the worst - their feet and lower legs were always so wet after splashing in puddles.

Someone recommended wellies with drawstrings. I got some Muflon (had never heard of them!) ones with drawstrings from amazon, for about £15, and a trespass rain suit. Nursery are always amazed when she takes it all off at the end of the day and she is dry and the other kids are soaked through. Was the first time ever she had come home from nursery with dry feet, and she had been knee deep in water.

Sorry for the essay, it’s just very rare I actually can be useful Grin

Having bought a lot of different leaky children’s wellies, I now always buy Joules and they haven’t leaked yet after several pairs!

cheeseychovolate · 27/09/2020 05:44

Dunlop wellies

Puddlelane123 · 27/09/2020 06:50

Suprised to hear people recommending Jojo Maman Wellies as I have had no less than 4 pairs develop identical splits in the rubber seals and hence copious leaking. A glance at the online reviews revealed I was not alone in my experience and yet when I complained to Jojos they told me that they are technically a ‘fashion item’ and hence not guaranteed to be waterproof...

movingonup20 · 27/09/2020 07:14

Every pair I've bought have been supermarket ones, asda normally, no leaks ever. My Asda ones are 20+ years old! Are you keeping them standing on something warm? Sharp objects on the floor?

BertieBotts · 27/09/2020 07:17

Aldi/Lidl ones are really good quality.

FourPlasticRings · 27/09/2020 07:18

I like the StartRite ones.

billybagpuss · 27/09/2020 07:18

You can get a welly repair glue for about a fiver. I have a pair of Goodyear ones that started leaking last year and the glue worked a treat.
