Would you travel (in the UK) in October half-term?

Just that really, would love a change of scene but don't know if its wise at this stage. In terms of money it seems that lots of places will refund cancellations up to fairly last minute but I don't know if it would be selfish to travel to another part of the country at the moment.

Why is it selfish? I would do it. I can't see any additional risk in doing it than staying at home. Less in fact as I wouldn't meet up with anyone.

Sirzy · 26/09/2020 14:43

I am booked to go to north wales for a few nights. If restrictions allow it I will go

shinynewapple2020 · 26/09/2020 14:51

I would but I wouldn't book anything until the last minute .

Depends on what you are planning to do while you are away, are you happy to our on waterproofs and her outside of the weather bad, or stay in your accommodation and play games ? Bear in mind that any indoor attraction will require face mask (for adults anyway )

The issue of whether it is selfish is really if you are coming from an area where cases are high and you are out and about in the community (eg schools) so there could be a possibility of you taking Covid to an area where cases are low.

shinynewapple2020 · 26/09/2020 14:53

. If you are happy to put on waterproofs and get outside

This should say

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 26/09/2020 14:54

We have a cottage booked in the Lake District - really hope we can go as our summer holiday was cancelled 🤞

saraclara · 26/09/2020 14:57

We've booked something. I paid the balance this morning having checked on their cancellation policy.

We're not being as anticipatory or excited about the stay, because who knows what the situation will be in a month. But we have something in place.
There's very little availability for that week, so I wouldn't rely on getting anything last minute.

Sophiesdog2020 · 26/09/2020 15:19

We’ve booked a cottage in Cornwall in late Nov., refundable up to 2 days before. It just so happens DD (working PT in retail has some leave booked over DS birthday, hence the timing).

We have been before at NY so happy to potter around the area, walk coast path, it is close to Eden, Lost gardens and Mevagissey, plus has a pool which is bookable for an hour a day by each cottage (7 in total).

Really, really hope we can go, keeping everything crossed we don't get a full lockdown.

We will have a meal or 2 out, but also happy to cook and do takeaways, chill in the cottage etc.

The only thing we haven’t yet done is booked kennels for dog, as they take first 3 nights cost if we need to cancel, but we are not expecting them to be that busy in lat November!

H1978 · 26/09/2020 15:33

According to government guidelines it’s fine to travel as long as you only travel as one household and follow social distancing rules. I say go for it, a change of scene will do you the world of good.

SpeedofaSloth · 26/09/2020 15:35

We were hoping for a weekend away, but have decided to leave it to closer to the time to see how things are. We didn't go away in summer, so that would ha ebeen our only stay away from home this year.

sansou · 26/09/2020 15:45

I've just paid the balance for our HT break - it's just over an hour away on our nearest coast. We had a short glamping break in July but that has been it. It sleeps 10 and they have given us a discount due to the rule of 6. We're a family of 4 and had been thinking of inviting another family household along which isn't happening now - we're just going by ourselves.

On a similar note, I have been tracking the bookings next year for a few UK holiday rentals on our short list. The summer weeks are filling up fast for next year - so much so, that I have just booked a week for one of them that I was holding off from due to the increase in prices generally across the board.

Just want to see a different set of 4 walls...

Aragog · 26/09/2020 15:50

I'm supposed be going to the Scottish highlands with Dh, flying to Inverness and back.

We will be just the two of us and, although in hotels, won't be within in close contact with anyone else. We would be respecting SDjng and mask use etc, and carry and use sanitiser all the time. Although on a plane it looks to be virtually empty and SDing in place.

We were due to go to the Caribbean (booked before quarantine idea came in) but we have been able to cancel despite it not being a quarantine country - I didn't want to take the risk of it coming in as a I teach so didn't really want two weeks off.

We will go away somewhere at October half term if we are able. But we won't be doing anything in close contact with other people.

Guess we will see if it's possible. I booked almost all of it on a refundable basis.

nosswith · 26/09/2020 15:53

I am not planning to go, but any holiday I have planned for the near future is such that I can cancel hotels on the day or at worst on the day beforehand.

sansou · 26/09/2020 16:27

The rule of 6 has meant cancellations for larger properties so I think that there will be last minute deals to be had.

MissCalamity · 26/09/2020 16:39

We've got an inset day on the Friday before half term so we're hoping to get away for a long weekend somewhere.
Haven't yet booked anything was thinking of a Haven site or my friend does have a place in North Wales if there is nothing available when we decide to book.

reluctantbrit · 26/09/2020 17:32

We originally planned to go but are very vary about it and unless the is a significant drop we won’t.

I just don’t feel safe enough going into indoor attractions at the moment and a week just doing walks will be met with moans from DD and me.

We plan to do local walks, carpet picnics, long naps, having the wood burner on and making a pile with pillows and blankets in front of it and enjoying the day.

tenlittlecygnets · 26/09/2020 17:37

We've booked a self catering cottage in a very quiet area with low Covid levels.

No idea if we'll have to cancel. Assuming we'll be able to get a refund if we can't go.

What a shower of shit.

tenlittlecygnets · 26/09/2020 17:38

And when we booked, everything has been booked - very little availability. A lot of people must be planning on travelling over half term!!

MadameBlobby · 26/09/2020 18:54

Yes we have booked 3 nights in a caravan. Have taken cancellation cover so will be OK even if it doesn’t go ahead. We will keep ourselves to ourselves and far away from everyone

Echobelly · 26/09/2020 18:55

I wouldn't plan to necessarily as I think there's a high chance of a lot of places being on lockdown during that period. Maybe a very last minute thing and not too far away

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/09/2020 18:57

We have been booked since January and will go unless rules change. Its just our household and we do lots of walks then chilling and reading, tv, games etc so no more risky than being at home.

MarshaBradyo · 26/09/2020 18:59

Ds moved his Easter holiday with friends to October. I have been wondering if it will go ahead.

EasterIssland · 26/09/2020 19:00

We’re going away on the 8th of Oct. Depending what you do in your day to day life it’ll be safer going on holiday than your current lifestyle.

swimster01 · 26/09/2020 19:04

Yes we have booked (but expect it will be cancelled)

Pyjamaface · 26/09/2020 19:06

We have booked a caravan for half term. As long as we are able/allowed then we will be going. Worst case, it's a different set of walls to look at!

Pootle40 · 26/09/2020 19:07

Yes our half term starts on 10th October so going away in the UK for a week. Just our family and won't be visiting other households.
