Does anyone on here have a Filofax or planner?

Not gonna lie, I am a bit of a Filofax and stationery junkie and as it’s been my payday recently, i was going to treat myself in Ryman’s or WH Smith. But last night, I found a gorgeous vintage leather Filofax Cavendish. It’s navy blue, I’m normally more of a pale pink or purple girl, but the quality looks lovely and despite being personal size, it has huge 30mm rings that are normally exclusive to the bigger a5 planners.

It got me thinking, who else on here carries a Filofax or planner? Obviously I do have an iPhone but something about paper I just love.

Can’t be the only Filofax lover here, can I?Grin

God I love a good diary system! Every year I try and find the perfect diary, but this thread makes me think that maybe I should go back to a Filofax! Started with a 'funfax' at school, and loved them since.
Any recommendations for size etc. I don't work, so don't need loads of room for meetings etc, but have children's activities, the usual day to day stuff to remember - particularly birthdays, I'm always late with cards!!

Sgtmajormummy · 25/09/2020 12:43

I realized the rot had set in when I took a photo of some information I needed to remember (think concert poster) instead of writing it in my Filofax.
That was 8/10 years ago.

Cavagirl · 25/09/2020 12:55

@Sgtmajormummy I've done the reverse & taken photos of important pages in my filofax before if I've know i might need them when I won't have it with me Grin

I have more than 30 Blush

I started with a filofax-alike, too. But I could not handle the rings and then I discovered BulletJournal - not the artisty ones, but the basic method created by a fellow ADHD person.
I just started a new red Leuchttum on the 10th August - the start of DS's last year of school.
Everything that is on, that I need to remember, to plan or to follow gets in there.

I love my filofax. Dsis sent me one from Canada with a Moose on it about 15 years ago and its still going strong.

Helgathehairy · 25/09/2020 17:45

@Honeybeexo You need a personal wide. Same height as a personal size but wider (hence the name). It isn't a filofax standard measurement so you would need to go to some other sellers to get the binder and print inserts for it.

I'm using a pocket size at the moment - not filofax though as the rings are too small. I like 25mm rings and I've got a few with 30mm rings.

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/09/2020 18:13

My firstGrin Filofax is now 30 years old , a personal burgundy calf leather Winchester. After a few years I found it too bulky to carry around all the time, so switched to a personal size for diary only and an A5 at home for all non-diary stuff. Still have the A5, but now use a Moleskine 18-month diary in my handbag.

Yes, I love my Filofaxes. And Moleskines.

SpringFan · 25/09/2020 18:38

I have got a beautiful personal burgundy leather organiser of the same vintage as Whereyouleftit , if not older. It might be a Microfile though. Over the years I've used all sorts of own brand refills, including one I picked up in a French supermarket, that had perforated corner that you tore off each week. No need for a bookmark.
Then I got a special offer pocket sized black leather organiser with Shredded Wheat coupons , I don't know how long ago. I started using it when I stopped using a briefcase for work and it worked well. Since I retired I changed from a week to a view, to week to a page. I am ashamed to say that for 2020 I got a small diary (99p) and have barely looked at it, as I use my phone for everything.
I keep both of them for old addresses and birthdays, and have years and years worth of pages stored carefully. I suppose now, it is too long ago for my expenses or time sheets to be queried , so I could get rid of them......

I gave a raspberry Finsbury too. It’s getting rather battered now but I love it more!

Husband bought be a teal original A5 for Christmas, but it’s just too big. The year before he bought me an A5 Kikki k with rainbows all over it, it’s gorgeous but still in the box

I also have a cherry red leather cross personal which is so beautiful but I’m scared to use it, and three fabric personals - yellow hearts, flamingos, and birdcage.

I only ever use my raspberry Finsbury!

Excuse typos 😧

luckylavender · 25/09/2020 21:08

I have one, it's over 30 years old. It's a J&M Davidson lizard skin one. And it's all worn in & lovely.

UnitedRoad · 25/09/2020 21:09

@inappropriateraspberry you need a personal with a week to two pages diary. I find that perfect for me. They’re paperback sized. I gave bigger, but they just remind me I don’t have constant appointments!

I have been looking i to it and not sure if impact would work, or is it just that bit too small?

torthecatlady · 25/09/2020 22:39

I've had a personal compact zip wallet for 5 or 6 years now.

UnitedRoad · 25/09/2020 23:32

@inappropriateraspberry Do you mean compact? According to this chart, they’re the same size, but maybe the compact isn’t as fat? I don’t know.

If you can go somewhere to have a look you’ll soon see which you love. I don’t think Paperchase stock them anymore, but I think Ryman’s do, and possibly WHSmith. I don’t know if this still happens but TKMaxx used to get old stock in in November (just needing a new diary). You could get some great bargains.

Sorry not to be much help.

That’s what puts me off, that I wouldn’t be able to get the inserts anywhere. That’s why I sacrifice the extra space to use a personal :p

The compact has smaller rings than the personal so can’t hold a full year of diary inserts.

CrepuscularCritter · 26/09/2020 06:36

I probably have around 30 Filofaxes and equivalent Blush including an A5 black Finsbury which holds my work stuff. For a diary this year, I'm using a Japanese Sunny which has the most beautiful paper. Sadly I haven't been able to track down a refill yet, so it may be back to a Moleskine for next year. I also use Travellers Notebooks for project work; the booklets are useful for tracking finances and keeping notes. Bullet journaling served me well for several years, but somehow I stopped last year and haven't gone back to it.

inappropriateraspberry · 26/09/2020 12:36

Sorry, was a bit tipsy last night! I actually meant pocket!! Seems a nice small size to put in my bag, but not sure how much space there'd be to actually write in it!

ilovesooty · 26/09/2020 14:37

I've treated myself to a lovely navy blue A5 Lockwood. It's my present to myself because all my holidays were cancelled.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/09/2020 17:02

Last night I went and looked for my old planner: midi with a zip all around and I also discovered an A5 model I didn't know I still had - need to find a purpose for it.

IloveJudgeJudy · 26/09/2020 20:37

I have been using an Erin Condren for a few years now. I always buy the horizontal and divide each day in half - one for work entries and one for personal. I keep holiday lists in there, presents lists, etc. It's my annual present to me! This year I've ordered the 2x 6-monthly life planners to see if it's better to have a couple of smaller books. I may try her flexible quarterly planners next time. I like the inspirational quotes and the lined page at the start of each month. I used to use lots of stickers but found it made the planner too thick. I also tried an 18-month planner one time. I didn't enjoy that; the spiral was huge and I got bored.

I now use only stickers for significant dates. I use different coloured pens for different activities.

I wish I could find a European/British company that did a planner with such great quality paper. I found the Personal Planners paper not so great and I believe Saturday and Sunday were only given half the space of weekdays which doesn't work for me as I work in a 24/7 industry.

I did try Filofax (well, the Kiki K version) which I loved the look of, but found the rings got in the way.

Perhaps I'll try Moleskine next time. I can't decide between that and the EC quarterly bound books.

I'm really loving this thread as none of my friends use written diaries but I have noticed a few younger (20s) colleagues have started using them.

Honeybeexo · 27/09/2020 14:50

New (vintage) Filofax and charms arrived :)Grin

Do people on here prefer their planners fat or thin? I definitely deliberately add lots to mine to make it fat
