Which prime minister would you want in charge at the moment?

You can chose any PM from recent memory, say about the 1979s.

After a convo with DH this morning we agreed that Blair might have managed this crisis the best, not that it's probably a great bunch to choose from...

I wonder how many if her supporters actually lived through her era, or just heard about it from their parents?

SheepandCow · 22/09/2020 22:48

@ssd

I'm shocked at the support for Thatcher here. I didn't realise mn was so right wing.
It's not about political leanings. It's being pragmatic (and rising above politics).
TheySeeHerRowling · 22/09/2020 22:53

Thatcher would at least have taken a serious interest in the science, as a scientist

But my answer is - surprisingly, as never a Tory - John Major

He seems uniquely to have that mix of integrity, compassion and intelligence so lacking in our own dear current PM

2nd place Blair, although I don't forgive him for the illegal war

(And I have lived through all these premierships, was 9 when Maggie was elected)

SquirrelScorn · 22/09/2020 22:57

Gordon Brown. Can handle a world crisis. Blair suffered a bit too much from love of spin and popularity. He would have struggled with the unpopular decisions in much the same way as Johnson. Thatcher clearly a no because she demonstrated she would not prioritise the impact on individual lives. May I honestly don’t know. Her premiership was a shit show, but Brexit made that inevitable. Major would be my next choice after Brown.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/09/2020 23:08

I can't believe how many people are saying Thatcher. I am hoping none of you had to live through life with her as PM. She'd have been much worse than Boris at killing off the old and the poor. She wouldn't have given a flying fuck - her plan would have been about decreasing the surplus population ...

I lived through it and saw the devastation she brought to the North West (and many other areas). Strong, yes. Cruel, yes. Caring - no fucking way.

Brown for me

Ltdannygreen · 22/09/2020 23:09

I’d rather have Ali g in charge 😂

CokeyCola · 22/09/2020 23:10

May, Brown or Thatcher. I bet Theresa May is glad she's out of there.

Lonelykettleshed · 22/09/2020 23:10

I'd rather import one from elsewhere. Can we have Jacinda Arden? If she's busy perhaps Obama could do it as he doesn't have a full time role at the minute. I'd even take Trudeau if he promised not to don racially inappropriate costumes.

wafflyversatile · 22/09/2020 23:13

Corbyn. We need some socialism and climate change action.

Stinkyguineapig · 22/09/2020 23:13

A half competent cabinet would also help. God help us with Patel, Gove, Hancock and the rest of the muppets.

An MRI cabinet would be more reliable. 🙄

Stinkyguineapig · 22/09/2020 23:14

Doh. MFI! Blush

Nat6999 · 22/09/2020 23:14

Tony Blair, the only qualification Boris has is for knocking out kids & running away.

RAOK · 22/09/2020 23:16

@Goldie01

Jacinda Ardern
Me too 😍
Singinginshower · 22/09/2020 23:17

Gordon Brown

ButterflyRuns · 22/09/2020 23:18

I'd go with Gordon Brown

PercyKirke · 22/09/2020 23:32

Blair.

PercyKirke · 22/09/2020 23:33

Corbyn. We need some socialism and climate change action.

Sorry not eligible. Lost in the lay-offs.

Davros · 22/09/2020 23:34

John Major

remainin · 22/09/2020 23:38

Blair. Not Thatcher.

midlifecrash · 22/09/2020 23:38

Gordon Brown

jakeyboy1 · 22/09/2020 23:48

Maggie.

Blair and Brown god help us - if we think Rishi's about to bankrupt us they'd have done it by April.

I couldn’t agree more. I am staggered by the number of people suggesting Margaret Thatcher and think it would be really interesting if people gave a rough indication of their location when posting as I am convinced this would suggest a strong north south divide. I am from a northern city that Margaret Thatcher despised and that in turn despised her. Whilst we also have no time for Boris (‘self pity city’) Johnson I do think he does want to try and get us through this as a society and I say this as someone who has never voted Conservative in their life
Howslifenow · 23/09/2020 00:11

Not from the previous ones. I would like Nicola to take charge.

PerkingFaintly · 23/09/2020 00:18

Brown, then Blair.

Theresa May would have been shite. She might have stayed up at night earnestly working through the figures, intending well, but she's not actually that bright and has no imagination, and when in power she was fundamentally too keen to placate the right-wing press and pressure groups, and was thus easily herded by the extremists.

peachgreen · 23/09/2020 00:21

Brown. He didn't care as much as the rest what people thought of him and would therefore have made the hard decisions we need right now. He was also a shrewd economist.
