No Flu Vaccinations available for the under 65's anywhere

Baaaahhhhh · 21/09/2020 16:28

Just that really, trying to get vaccinations for DD's, DH and myself, but we don't qualify. A nagging, and I know in my heart, probably unreasonable, little voice, is wondering whether it would not be better to vaccinate the working population in order to keep things going. What happens if we all go down with Covid plus Flu....... unlikely but......

Dh gets a flu jab every year anyway and was in shielding group. Government had said that the households of vulnerable people will get the flu jab this year. Because he is under 65, our GP surgery won't allow him to book an appointment this month but might be able to immunise him in October. Local chemist will not allow him to get the flu jab now, even if he pays, as he is under 65. When we asked about immunisations for rest of household, including teen DC, GP surgery said blanket no. Chemist won't immunise teen DC, we'd have to arrange it at a special travel clinic - nearest one is London (we don't live that close and would need to travel for several hours on public transport, which is not recommended anyway). I get a flu jab through work (education) and I'm likely to be the only member of the household immunised for some time.

My husband had his flu jab today (57), but he has COPD. Mine is booked for Friday - I am his carer (54)

AldiAisleofCrap · 21/09/2020 17:35

Chemist won't immunise teen DC @Chrestomanci3 not for the nhs jab but if you pay you can. I am shielding and my under 16 had hers at Lyoyds £11.99.

Big Sainsbury's near us has a pharmacy that will do it - but it won't be free unless you're 65 or over, or have some underlying health condition.

Can book appointments but also they'll do walk-ins.

Ditto for a local pharmacy attached to the hospital.

I'm sure you'll find one - it just won't be free.

LadyofMisrule · 21/09/2020 17:38

All our local places have stopped taking bookings if you are under 65. They will be re-opening then mid October.

Angel2702 · 21/09/2020 17:41

I haven’t been able to book either first time I even knew I qualified for free vaccine as I receive carers allowance. I usually book and pay in pharmacy.

JellyfishandShells · 21/09/2020 17:41

I’m booked in for next week at Boots ( booked a couple of weeks ago). Something similar happened last year, didn’t it ?

TattiePants · 21/09/2020 17:48

@BIWI are you sure there are still appointments today? I checked Lloyd’s at Sainsbury’s last week and they had loads of appointments from early October so I wasn’t in any hurry to book. They’ve all disappeared from the website now.

emilyfrost · 21/09/2020 17:53

GPs have always only offered them to those who qualify medically eg. pregnant, over 65s, asthmatic etc.

They’ve never just given them out to anyone who wants one Confused

AyDeeAitchDee · 21/09/2020 17:57

My local Boots is booking them. £13

Chrestomanci3 · 21/09/2020 18:32

Aldi, our local independent chemist wouldn't offer the paid jab to under 16s at all, and directed us to nearby Lloyd's. Lloyd's said that for under 16s they would need to go to a specialist travel-vaccines clinic, of which our closest recommended one is London. Thanks to this thread, I'm currently trying local Tesco pharmacy. It's bizarre that shielding dH, who gets an NHS flu jab every year, cannot get a flu jab at his GP surgery or pharmacy, but can get one at the local supermarket!

Yes - I asked this morning!

Baaaahhhhh · 21/09/2020 18:44

So, I have booked for Tesco's late October, for DH, myself and 17 year old. I wasn't looking for a free one, but now hope that they won't run out before we get there. I am assuming they only let you book if they have supplies ready. No further bookings available after October though.

Thanks once again for the heads up about Tesco.

dollypartonscoat · 21/09/2020 18:57

Oh no. I was going to book tomorrow

LondonJax · 21/09/2020 18:58

DS has a heart condition so we have our flu jabs each year - ours to protect him (umbrella protection). We've got all ours booked for October through the GP.

TattiePants · 21/09/2020 19:02

Thanks OP. There are none available for me at Boots, Superdrug or Lloyd’s but I’ve just tried Tesco’s and there’s some available mid-October. None in our local store but close enough and they’ll treat 14yo DS which Lloyds wouldn’t.

WeeMadArthur · 21/09/2020 19:08

Pharmacies in Asda are worth a try too, that’s where I usually get mine done

MissConductUS · 21/09/2020 19:14

The jab for those over 65 is a larger dose, so they've run out of the standard one. The vaccine is still being distributed in the US and I expect the same is true in the UK.

Celena86 · 21/09/2020 19:23

Try a local pharmacy . More likely to have free spaces than places like boots etc

wendz86 · 21/09/2020 19:56

I’ve also booked tesco . The Lloyds website wasn’t working for me .

Meredusoleil · 21/09/2020 20:01

I got mine done at my local Boots on Friday, having booked it over a month ago online. Pharmacist a bit surprised that I wasn't in the vulnerable category thus getting it for free as they are the priority at the moment I think.

I tried the Asda pharmacy repeatedly last year and kept getting sent away saying they didn't have any for private under 65s use yet.

Always stick with Boots now. Even though they charge more than elsewhere. At least you can get Advantage card points now 😉

jasjas1973 · 21/09/2020 20:04

The Govt did promise the over 50s would be included due to CV... i guess another game changer that wont happen.

None available anywhere in my part of Cornwall.

Kittywampus · 21/09/2020 20:06

I get mine from the gp but haven't had the text yet to say that they are taking bookings. It is still quite early in the year for them.

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/09/2020 20:08

One of the many, many things that has fucked me right off today is my GP surgery claiming they have no flu vaccine yet. None. For anyone.

Not even for the priority groups. (I'm immune-suppressed.)

Is this just bollocks then, and I could pay for one? (Although I'm not supposed to go out at the moment.) Sigh.

Advice appreciated.

GruntBaby · 21/09/2020 20:25

IME the GP surgeries never get the flu vaccine until weeks after it's available privately.

Privately - DH had his done at Boots last week. I was booked for today but when I turned up they were running >30 mins late and I had to get to a meeting so rebooked for early October on the spot. Scared now that they'll run out. We have a v vulnerable DS.

Schools are doing the usual vaccines, but if you have a particularly vulnerable child there's a special route to get one of the earliest slots.
