What the hell do I have to do to lose weight? Huh? HUH???

I’ve stopped drinking - 38 days AF so far, with no plans to restart.

I’ve completed C25K, three weeks ago, and have kept up running, three times a week since.

I go open water swimming once or twice a week.

I do an hour-long yoga class every week.

I have three dogs that get walked every day.

I have a Fitbit, and always make sure I do my 10,000 steps and always do more active minutes than the target.

I’m also coeliac, which curtails my options when it comes to eating out and takeaways. Lockdown put a stop to meals out, too.

All this effort, and I haven’t lost an ounce! I don’t have scales, granted, but my waist has INCREASED by an inch and my clothes feel exactly the same tight.

Wtf? I’m so fed up. Yes, I do eat a lot, always have, but it’s mostly good stuff, and with the not drinking, no gluten, tons of exercise, I had hoped I’d be allowed the odd treat. Clearly not.

Is this it, then? Does middle age mean living on lettuce and a dream if I don’t want to resemble a pit pony?

And please don’t take away my carbs. I thrive on them. I’ve tried low-carb and it gives me a headache.

I want to avoid all diets if possible. I’ve done SW and WW in the past, as well as 16:8. I just can’t sustain it.

Is anyone else in a similar position? What do I have to do?!

I feel you OP, totally feel you. I’ve formed out for an “accountability coach” and fuck me its working. I check in with her every day about what I’m eating and what I plan to do and massage her when I’ve done it. I’ve also had my calories limited to 1700/day and I use the Lose It app as I fucking hate MFP.

I now have to weigh my portions and also exercise more; I do HIIT workouts from you tube, strength exercises she’s set me and also yoga for core strength.

Certain exercises will torch calories, HIIT makes a huge difference and actually logging and photographing everything I eat has made a difference; I’ve lost 4kg in a month and gone down a dress size.

Let me know if you want further details but I completely get your OP and was the same until around 5 weeks ago x

@CodenameVillanelle lol to lose weight!! I am VERY heavy but only a size 14. I have other health problems that don't help. My body is weird!!

LunaNorth · 20/09/2020 20:44

Thanks for the kind messages. I shall check back in after a couple of weeks, if that’s ok.

Oh, and yes, I do need to lose weight. I’m a solid 14, with a stupid belly roll that stops me doing the plough position properly in yoga Blush

I have a few observations :)

Aerobic excercise- running, walking, swimming, low intensity cardio- makes me hungry. Especially running. I’m a shit runner so cannot run for long enough or hard enough to burn the calories I want to eat when I’m done.

Weights- i do circuit training, sometimes crossfit, that kind of “stations” mixed up sessions. After I am not hungry at all, and it’s easier to control my eating.

Diet- I eat a balanced diet but watch calories. Cutting stuff out again drives my appetite. Low carb does not work for me at all.

I run. Low intensity for over an hour most days. Doeskin make me hungry. I find if I eat too many carbs and not enough fat I get hungry. Fat is extremely satiating, especially saturated fat, yes, it's calorific but curbs hunger more than just about anything else.

Hyperfish101 · 20/09/2020 21:15

I came out of a heavy gym session with my PT last week and was so starving i went straight to the chippy 😂. TBF, I aim for ‘fit not skinny’ so it wasn’t a disaster. I was famished though!

Read or listen on audible to the Obesity Code. Fascinating. And then you will know why.

@Looneytune253 can I ask your height and weight? I’m 5.1 13stone ish lost some recently, and burning 3000 cals is very rare for me, I once burnt 3369 but that was 25k steps and 221 active minutes. Don’t think I’d ever do 4000 in a day

justanotherneighinparadise · 20/09/2020 21:39

I’ll just leave intermittent fasting here for you Smile

LunaNorth · 20/09/2020 21:40

Fasting makes me so grumpy that DH banned me after one day Grin

Yep. Everyone is different. Running and fat works for you, weights and carbs work for me.

Trick is finding what works for you without yoyoing trying millions of different diets.

RaisinGhost · 20/09/2020 21:40

Yes, I do eat a lot

There's your problem OP!

LunaNorth · 20/09/2020 21:40

Banned the fasting I mean. Not banning me from the house.

Though I imagine that would have followed if I’d kept it up Grin

I suppose that’s it in a nutshell. I’m a pig.

Oh well. Today’s calories come in at 1440, so that’s not a bad start, I suppose.

If you are genuinely burning 3000+ a day and eating 1300 you are dangerously under fuelling your body.

veryvery · 20/09/2020 21:44

So you have to have burned 1940- 2440 cals to start to see a difference on the scales, OP.

ncqtime · 20/09/2020 21:45

Yep was going to echo others. If you eat a lot, and it's mostly good just eat exactly the same but a little less. Can't not work really

Wallywobbles · 20/09/2020 21:47

No. Rather the opposite. More like an aha.

I listened to Healthy as Fuck before hand. She looks at the emotional side a bit more. I'm listening to the books to help me be motivated.

Basically I'm 50 in Jan and I'm over 100kgs. In my late 20s I was 55 kg. And I've yo-yoed ever since.

I've lost 5 kings since the beginning of September. I seem to have fallen into 16/8 just by not eating my first meal of the day before I'm actually hungry.

Sadly I think breakfast maybe gone forever.

But I'm a very good (modest too) cook. With a mass of cookbooks. And we are eating well. The problem in part is 4 kids.

This lunch on a regular basis. Thai peanut coleslaw.

MaraScottie · 20/09/2020 21:48

OP have you considered taking up weight training?

Building muscle is a really great way to feel great, strong and you'll burn more calories. I'd highly recommend including 1-2 sessions a week. It's particularly important for women as we get older to prevent bone density issues.

motorcyclenumptiness · 20/09/2020 21:50

What do I have to do?!
UltramarathonsGrin
Carbs are the only good thing in my life, I don't want to exclude them so I have to outrun them

Namechangeme87 · 20/09/2020 21:50

Have t read the full thread and not sure how much you were drinking but when I quit the booze i was annoyed I didn’t get the weight loss everyone was talking about and then maybe like 5-6 weeks in it just dropped off and contó tied to do so !

Namechangeme87 · 20/09/2020 21:51

*continued

LunaNorth · 20/09/2020 21:52

I’ve burned 2229 calories, according to the Fitbit.

So I’m in deficit!

I’ll have a look at the Obesity Code. Not sure about when I’ll fit weight training in, but I have some little hand weights at home.
