Clothing, I can understand why, but jeez!

AdventureCode · 21/09/2020 18:11

Oh and light shades, why are they £20 odd for a bit of fabric round a wire frame Confused

Astro86 · 21/09/2020 18:17

As a northerner who had to move to the south east I just cannot get over the cost of buying or renting. It’s been over 10 years and I still have go into a slight state of shock!

I also Shock at the cost of decent pans, Lego, storage boxes, school uniform/shoes, parking...

JonSnowIsALoser · 21/09/2020 18:18

Blackout curtains and blinds. We have large windows and lots of them so it's thousands of ££££. It's mostly just fabric!

Likewise, replacement sofa covers. It's cheaper to get a new sofa.

Twiddlingthumbs · 21/09/2020 18:19

Tax.

Income tax, road tax, council tax, capital gains tax, stamp duty land tax, inheritance tax, you name it. We pay tax on basically everything. Soon there will be human existence tax.

Train fares - when I started working my season ticket cost as much as my rent! I bought a flat in town for the week as the mortgage payments were considerably cheaper than the commuting costs. Nowadays the other way round of course.

Later on I discovered the eye watering costs of school uniform.....

@FixItUpChappie

I completely shocked when we went bought our first couchShock. Had 2nd hand ones until in our early 30s.....

Actually furniture bought outside of Ikea when that's been your soul diet of home furnishing is a shocker

Tbh I've gone back to buying from Ikea in recent years as frankly it's better value for money then SCS, DFS, et al.
WendyE · 21/09/2020 18:29

Parking charges, any building or repair works around the house, replacement double glazing, car/home insurance.

Changethetoner · 21/09/2020 18:31

Headboard for beds. Who knew beds didn't automatically come with a headboard, and that they are an extra cost?

Werk · 21/09/2020 18:31

Yy to cheese!
When I lived at home I used to eat a good 100g chunk as a snack most days.
Got to university and went shopping for the first time - nope! No more cheese for me Sad

Those that are saying legal fees - are you talking about conveyancing fees? If so compare to Estate agent fees and then decide which is better value....
Plus solicitors/ conveyancers are regulated and insured. Estate agents? Hmm

mumda · 21/09/2020 18:51

Gas boilers. It won't be a repair bound to be a new one needed.

I went to the US last year for a week and rented a car and it was £450! It was in the suburbs no public transport options, so I needed a vehicle. I had no idea prior to starting the planning process that it would take such a big chunk of my holiday budget.
