Worrying child comment

“So-and-so’s dad has special sugar that’s not legal in this country. It makes you really hyper.”

Does your brain go to so-and-so’s dad selling or using drugs? And what would you do about it?

OP posts:
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/09/2020 20:49

How old is the child in question?

SebastianTheCrab · 19/09/2020 20:50

It depends. How old is the child who said it? Do they have form for telling the truth or exaggerating? What do you know of So and So and their family?

Emergencyusername467 · 19/09/2020 20:50

7

OP posts:
Mamette · 19/09/2020 20:51

My brain would go to drugs but thinking more rationally it could be pixie sticks or something american like that.

FlorenceNightshade · 19/09/2020 20:53

Not legal in this country strikes me as odd for a young child to say

lughnasadh · 19/09/2020 20:53

I'd say someone was just steering a child away from the sweets cupboard.

Mine thought cola was practically illegal for children until they were about six.

Emergencyusername467 · 19/09/2020 20:54

I’d describe my child as generally truthful, but can be naive. So and so is the same age, immigrant family where the adults do not speak much English and I’ve not really spoken to them beyond smiling and nodding. Kids are at school together and play out on housing estate.

OP posts:
Karwomannghia · 19/09/2020 20:55

I wouldn’t think that, I would think was he talking about some kind of sweetener he imports from abroad. Cocaine is illegal everywhere.

lughnasadh · 19/09/2020 20:55

Aren't there loads of American sweets made with stuff you can't use in the EU?

MajesticWhine · 19/09/2020 20:57

Overthinking. I would do nothing.

Mamette · 19/09/2020 20:58

Yes. I mentioned pixie sticks upthread because they’re like coloured sugar in a tube.

There’s also crazy things like those yellow birds, I can’t remember what they’re called but they are practically radioactive, Tweets or something.

Mamette · 19/09/2020 20:59

Oh. My post above was meant to quote @lughnasadh but it didn’t work.

everythingbackbutyou · 20/09/2020 09:02

@Mamette, do you mean Peeps?!!

something2say · 20/09/2020 09:06

Someone's dad got caught using cocaine or speed and the kids asked what it was. I've also heard 'daddy grows special tobacco.'

Camomila · 20/09/2020 09:13

I'd think it was more likely to be some imported sweets with lots of e-numbers (based on the 'makes you really hyper').

Isn't aspartame illegal in some places?

FTMF30 · 20/09/2020 09:23

If they are sn immigrant family, I would just assume it's some kind of sweet from their home country that wouldn't pass food standards here.

rorosemary · 20/09/2020 09:54

Could be drugs. Or simply that dad has diabetes and the kids need to stay out of his snack drawer for when he gets a low.

something2say · 20/09/2020 11:03

Goodness the naivety!!

Sugar is a well known name for speed.

Mamette · 20/09/2020 11:20

Yes!

Mamette · 20/09/2020 11:21

Not really. We’re just discussing possible alternatives other than the obvious.
DetectiveRandySomething · 20/09/2020 11:23

I'd think it was children one upping each other about stupid shit that only kids care about.

TyroSaysMeow · 20/09/2020 12:32

Sounds like So-and-so's dad hasn't been taking adequate steps to shield his kid from his drugs, and has had to come up with a child-friendly explanation when questioned by his kid. So-and-so's dad is a fucking idiot for not keeping his drugs and his kid separate.

Not much you can do though, OP - there's plausible deniability, as other responses demonstrate.

AmyandPhilipfan · 20/09/2020 12:40

I would probably assume that the dad puts sugar on his cereal or something but wants to protect his child’s teeth so has come up with some kind of story as to why the child is not allowed it. I admit I am quite naive though!

Thenneverendingstorohree · 20/09/2020 12:42

Could be, but can also imagine mine saying that about some stick of sugar type sweet!

slipperywhensparticus · 20/09/2020 12:42

Are they nice people? At 7 it should be fairly easy to keep a friend as "school only"
