What's your favourite non-swearword?

DH and I are giving up swearing as toddler DS is getting quite chatty. We try not to swear in front of him but need to redouble our efforts. This got me thinking- what are the most satisfying non-swear alternatives?

My personal favourite is 'Schostakovich!' instead of shit. I also enjoy 'Jeepers!'

I would consider sod a bit of a swear. Surely it’s a reference to sodomite. Similar to bugger.

Dd (4) rather likes ‘oh snot bubbles’.

My DF never ever used anything you could identify as a swear word but for some reason when things were at their very worst - hitting his thumb with a hammer type situation - he would shout: District Nurse!

My kids would refer to each other as "You son of a motherless goat!"

Hells teeth

TOFO1965 · 15/09/2020 18:49

Cripes is a fav of mine.

dollypartonscoat · 15/09/2020 18:54

Gee whizz

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2020 18:55

Not one I've really used myself, but the one I've most enjoyed hearing was 'Fiddlepoops', uttered forcefully by a wonderful woman, in a working environment. The object of her wrath was usually her computer.

powkin · 15/09/2020 18:56

Jesus H Christ is probably my most used. But we had to give up a swear jar for me as I was going to have to declare bankruptcy. DD is 19 months but hasn’t started swearing yet.

SingingSands · 15/09/2020 18:59

Jeff

"What the Jeff is that?"
"I can't find the Jeffing car key"

TroysMammy · 15/09/2020 19:03

Chicken pasta instead of cheeky bastard
Oh sugar
Knickers

BlusteryShowers · 15/09/2020 19:32

I do like "Crikey!"

I like "oh dash!", "Flaming Nora". We do end up with a lot of "flipping" and "blooming" as well.

Frownette · 15/09/2020 19:38

Lot of them have been mentioned but shoot (instead of shit) as well

Frownette · 15/09/2020 19:39

Drat

JustSaying101 · 15/09/2020 19:52

Scheisse is one that gets mumbled by me now and again. Does it count if you swear in a different language to your mother tongue...?!

Jennygentle · 15/09/2020 19:55

Hold the phone! (Holy fuck)
Cripes!
Knickers!

daisychain1620 · 15/09/2020 19:59

Omg I do this too lol. I say frigging but it's maybe swearing? I dunno? Flip
afaloren · 15/09/2020 19:59

One of my friends exclaims, ‘Shine a light,’ which is quite good, and my uncle used to say, ‘Flaming Nora.’

LlamaofDrama · 15/09/2020 20:03

My friend says "rats knickers" which I've always loved!

OrigamiOwl · 15/09/2020 20:08

Absolute coin & complete biff are my two favourites...

FippertyGibbett · 15/09/2020 20:12

Chuffin, as in chuffin heck and for chuff’s sake.

merryhouse · 15/09/2020 20:13

@Inextremis could that maybe have been a corruption of "pox on it"?

My mother used to say "for CRYing out loud"

I went through a phase of using "rats" a fair bit.

Otherwise I might use "bother" (which by reminding me of Eeyore's attempt at poetry (those two bothers will have to rhyme with each other... BUTHER!) always makes me smile)

Nowadays I often say buggery bollocks (sweetie darling) but only when by myself!

missmouse101 · 15/09/2020 20:15

Shish kebab!

whatnow41 · 15/09/2020 20:25

Cheese and rice!!!

pinkyboots1 · 15/09/2020 20:26

We have "Christ on a motorbike" no idea where it came from and snarling "Shnorbitz" aggressively under our breath (for those too young to remember it was a St Bernard dog belonging to Bernie Winters!)

tornadoalley · 15/09/2020 20:28

Oh Sugar (instead of, oh shit)

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 15/09/2020 20:30

Common ones in my area are "go comb a monkey" and "go pick coconuts" instead of "go fuck yourself."
