If DC have one day off now eg for a cold, do they have to be off for 14 days?

Back in march if DC had a day off for any illness they then had to stay off for two weeks - does anyone know if that is still the case?

Haven't your school sent out guidance? Both my DCs schools did before the start of term.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:15

Not specifically on this, no.

Ours only stay off to self isolate (in the case it being them that's ill) if they have one or more of the three main symptoms - and even then if they have a negative test result they can return.

Not if you can get a negative test result - presuming they even have one of the three main symptoms.

Ring school and ask, if you can't find an email about this.

audweb · 14/09/2020 07:21

Why would they need two weeks off for a cold? I wouldn’t even get a test if they caught the cold. Most of the kids in Scotland caught it as soon as they went back and were told not to test if it was just the cold. The symptoms are different.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:21

No coronavirus symptoms but just bad cold, sore throat, not well enough for school.

Think day off is best but not if it will be for two weeks!

I've not heard of a 2 week sick time for every bug/virus. I'd ask tye school for a witten copy about it.

bristolone · 14/09/2020 07:24

Same situation. Heavy cold, lots of snot but no coronavirus symptoms at all. Fine in themselves.
Caught from school as have been nowhere else.

We have no chance of a test as a rising area. I'm hoping the school don't insist on a test as it most definitely is a cold.

One of mine has a cold every two weeks in winter. If we can't access tests she is going to be absent most of the term if the policy is to test or isolate for 14 days with every cold.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/09/2020 07:26

Our school has been fine with a snotty nose type cold. DS was perky enough not to need time off for it and had none of the three cited symptoms.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:26

@bristolone are you sending yours in?

OP posts:
bristolone · 14/09/2020 07:29

Not today as although they are fine, they are snotty, I don't want to spread it and cause other parents angst.
However, I'm not working at the moment so am in a fortunate position.
I'm hoping to send them back tomorrow after a restful day. 🤞🏻

I'm more worried the school will demand a test or refuse entry for 14 days.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:29

The only thing is one DC has the odd cough when clearing her throat from snot - it’s not continuous at all but I don’t want to worry anyone

OP posts:
bristolone · 14/09/2020 07:30

Same - one of mine always clears his throat with a cold.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:31

@bristolone yes exactly. A day off will be good but not two weeks. No tests here either.

tiredanddangerous · 14/09/2020 07:31

No they don't have to be off for 14 days with a cold. No school would want that...they're too worried about their attendance figures!

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:32

Sorry x post

I sent my dd to school with a cold last week and you get dd went to nursery with one. An occasional cough from nasal drip is not a continuous corona cough.

Our school specifically sent guidance out saying that they know the winter bugs have started to do the rounds if they’re well enough to come in with a cold then send them in unless they have one of the main coronavirus symptoms but even then with a negative test they can come back to school.

Weepingwillows12 · 14/09/2020 07:37

My schools policy is if you have a cough, high temperature or loss of taste and smell then off for at least 7 days and rest of family self isolates for 2 weeks unless the sick child gets a negative covid test (good luck getting one). Any other illness, like a cold, stay home until you feel better. Basically act as you normally would if no covid symptoms.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:39

I’m not sure why we haven’t been sent any illness guidance I’ve looked through my emails...

Benjispruce2 · 14/09/2020 07:39

If hot or cough get a test. Otherwise carry on. We had a child in with a cold so we took her temperature and it was raised so sent home. Tested negative.

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2020 07:41

If they don't have a new, continuous cough, or a temperature, and there's no change to their sense of smell or taste then they don't need to isolate and they don't need a test.

An occasional cough to clear postnasal drip isn't a new, continuous cough.

Happyhippos2020 · 14/09/2020 07:48

Thanks all... what would you think about sending to school? I’m inclined not to, but think in pre-corona days I might have (we were always encouraged not to keep them off for a cold), at least with the one who is lively and seems fine in herself.

I’m worried that the occasional cough would be taken for a symptom and she’d be isolated and sent home which would be unpleasant for all...

OP if her cough gets to the stage that it's noticeable, then at that point she'd be eligible for a covid test and could go back once results are negative.

I have the same with DD this morning - she (and I !) had a very restless nights sleep as came down with a cold last night. Full of snot etc today and the odd cough just clearing her throat. I'm keeping her off at least just for today as don't want the school/other parents going into hazmat crisis mode if she does the odd cough

No tests available in our area Sad
