Are you thinking of a UK holiday at half term?

We didn't get away in the summer. Various reasons, mostly that we didn't fancy it when restaurants etc were still getting to grips with the procedures and lots of places still closed, plus the prospect of hostile locals.

I was hoping we'd do something at half term, but now with the prospect of more local closures, I'm not sure if booking something is wise, partly because of the inconvenience and possible cost of having to cancel and partly because it doesn't seem entirely sensible to travel.

It would be lovely to do "something" though.

I also wonder if everywhere will be very busy, with lots of peope like us who didn't get away in the summer trying to make up for it.

We are going camping

bloodyc · 13/09/2020 19:44

I'm considering butlins but a friend told me I was mad to book anything. Place is nearly fully booked though and that's for the week before half term.

dollypartonscoat · 13/09/2020 19:46

Yes, booked a pitch for the motorhome already

RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 19:47

Shock really?

No, I'm back to sticking up on catering bags of rice Grin

RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 19:48

Stocking up

supersonicginandtonic · 13/09/2020 19:49

Were off to Butlins. Been booked a year.

Orangesofaandcoffee · 13/09/2020 19:52

We are going to the lakes, its been booked a year, planning on doing lots of out door things and taking lots of games for the evenings!

JustSaying101 · 13/09/2020 19:54

Are you hoping to go abroad OP or stay within the UK?

JustSaying101 · 13/09/2020 19:56

Ignore that, just seen you've put UK holiday! My bad for skim reading!

chutneypig · 13/09/2020 19:57

I’ve taken a punt on a campsite - we’ve got a trailer tent. Might be a bit nippy but it’s not too expensive if things don’t pan out.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/09/2020 19:58

No, don’t feel the benefits are worth it. It would be a change of scenery but that’s it. I’d not want to eat out, go anywhere with crowds and who knows how bad it will be given rising case numbers.

snappycamper · 13/09/2020 19:59

I have the week booked off work and would love to do something with the kids but just can't decide what. I've often done a city break for a few days with kids at October half term but I'm not really up for the indoor activities that we'd normally do in a city.

SimpleComforts · 13/09/2020 20:04

I fancy just a few days in a good hotel with a decent restaurant and bracing walks.

Camping in October! Brrr rather you than me

Dailyhandtowelwash · 13/09/2020 20:06

We’re booked for a long weekend in a posh B&B with nice restaurants nearby. I am fully expecting it all to collapse though.

SydneyCarton · 13/09/2020 20:07

We’ve booked Center Parcs but I’m holding off paying the balance until the last possible minute. They’ve confirmed we’ll get a full refund if the holiday gets cancelled because of Covid but I’m wary of some loophole suddenly appearing Hmm

Snailsetssail · 13/09/2020 20:08

We’ve booked a cottage somewhere rural for half term. Lots of walks along the beach and then a film and snacks in the afternoon.

pandafunfactory · 13/09/2020 20:09

We will be gong to in-laws caravan hopefully. It's our usual Scottish half term break.

SimpleComforts · 13/09/2020 20:09

My worry with those is things getting to a point where you don't want to go but it isn't actually cancelled. E.g. a lot of the facilities or local attractions are closed but the accommodation remains open.

We're going to Cornwall, at least I hope we are although I'm not optimistic. It's been booked since Christmas and we've really been looking forward to it.

tinytemper66 · 13/09/2020 20:11

Either Windsor/London or Devon. Not booking until the night before we go in case of local lockdowns etc

cheeseismydownfall · 13/09/2020 20:12

We have booked 4 nights glamping, having also had a week in a cottage and a long weekend glamping over the summer holiday. All of these are/were within a 3 hour easy drive, with lots of walking and quiet evenings.

I feel differently to IceCream - our summer break was x100 more than just a change of scenery. It is a change of pace, a change of mindset, proper time together as a family. Obviously if we are prevented from going due to lockdown restrictions so be it, but assuming we can legally still travel within the UK it is worth every penny for us as a family.

SydneyCarton · 13/09/2020 20:17

SimpleComforts Exactly, and they won’t honour the refund because technically the holiday can still go ahead, and then you find you’ve basically shelled out a month’s mortgage payment to sit and play Connect 4 in a slightly different living room Hmm

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/09/2020 20:30

We’ve got a reunion in Edinburgh booked since last December. A few people have flights booked from down south. I’m not optimistic it will happen.(tbh, I’m not wanting to go)

Fantabulous1 · 13/09/2020 20:34

@SimpleComforts I'm not sure if it was another place or centreparcs, a friend of ours recently went and booked out a premium lodge for his family stay. He expected some restrictions but with the pool they only allowed him 45 minutes per day and he needed to actually pay more to enter the pool (think it was £10 per guest).

It may be another one of the larger Lodge places but I'd suggest you give them a ring or drop an email to see what is actually included. When he queried why it wasn't made obvious on booking they explained it was all in the T&Cs link next to PAY NOW!
