Do you have a kitchen bin?

And if so, how do you keep it clean?!

I've lost count of the bins I've binned because they just end up rusty and minging. Atm we're back to putting rubbish in the wheelie bin as we go along but that's no fun midwinter

And yes, I use liners and wash it often but it just doesn't cut it.

We have a Joseph Joseph totem as well and we use the Joseph Joseph bags too. I've never needed to wash the bin itself out but clean the lid every so often.

Animum2 · 13/09/2020 20:10

No bin as kitchen is tiny, but we live in a block with bin chute so any rubbish goes straight down that

H1978 · 13/09/2020 20:29

Been through a few bins over the years but the one I have at the moment is the best one I’ve ever had. It’s the 50l black simple human one. I put it in the bath to wash it then leave it to dry overnight.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/09/2020 20:43

@NannyR

I have a small plastic one from ikea that lives in a cupboard. It's really easy to wash out and keep clean.
This. It goes in the dishwasher.
Happydaysforever123 · 13/09/2020 20:46

I use a small lightweight bucket under the sink, I use bin liners. I wash it with hot water and washing up liquid in the sink regularly.
It never gets smelly, no lid to open. Plus I use the small bucket for cleaning jobs,

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 13/09/2020 20:48

Nope , my rubbish goes straight outside in the wheelie bin. I cant get it out of my mind that I'm keeping rotting food in the house ! I think because there are only 2 of us here it would take a while to fill up and by then it would stink.

It's easy to get rid of the general waste and recycling as I go along , but others may have a more complex wheelie bin situation !

purplepolarbear · 13/09/2020 20:50

We have an Ikea bin recycling system in a drawer under the kitchen sink. Most of our waste food and packaging is recycled so we just have a small bin for other rubbish. Keeping food waste separate helps and washing out containers. Bin area gets wiped daily and cleaned out properly once a week. Had them for 5 years and its never been disgusting. You just need to keep on top of it.

AriettyHomily · 13/09/2020 20:52

I tend to use a bag on the door handle and chuck it daily. Not ideal but I get so pissed odd with ripping liners in the actual bin plus smells that this is just easier.

Passthecake30 · 13/09/2020 20:54

I’ve had many, but settled on a small one now - fits a carrier bag in. I only want to use old/spare carrier bags for rubbish, and not buy specific ones when I get enough in my daily life (even though I try my best to not to) so that solves the issue.

GoldenPlover · 13/09/2020 20:58

Me and my DH both grew up in homes that just had a plastic bag on the kitchen door handle and we did the same for a long time as we didnt have space for one, but now we've moved house and got the space we've got some fancy one with a touch free sensor on it. We wipe it out/clean it every time we take it out to the big bin tho to make sure it doesnt go all manky

thelegohooverer · 13/09/2020 21:07

I have 3 plastic ikea bins in a cupboard for food/recycling/general waste. Liners in the dirty ones and no lids. They’re small, so they have to be emptied daily. I wipe them out now and then, but not even weekly. I lined the cupboard with cheap stick on tiles from a pound shop, and it gets an occasional spritz of dettol. But nothing sits long enough to get stinky or stuck.

GetRid · 13/09/2020 21:08

@sunnysidegold
We also have the 30l Brabantia bin. You can get cheap versions of the bags from Tesco.

We've had ours for years and it's not rusty despite heavy use. It gets an occasional spray and wipe with multi surface cleaner and seems just fine.

AlCalavicci · 13/09/2020 21:20

I have this one , It is one , it is only small so all carrier bags fit it.
I had to trim a bit of the shelf ( about 2 niches deep ) in the cupboard to get it to fit. the only down side to this one is the lid doesn't stay open on its own , presumably so you don't trap it when shutting the cupboard door but it is annoying when you have several things to put in the bin but i solved this with a very small bit of self adhesive velcro

Sgtmajormummy · 13/09/2020 21:37

I have this kitchen bin. I bought it not expecting much and it has lasted more than ten years, the longest ever!
My usual problem is whacking the ground coffee filter on the side of the bin and cracking it but this seems to be quite rubbery, not brittle, plastic.

I use it for compost waste on the smaller side and non recyclable on the other. Everything recyclable leaves the kitchen on a daily basis.

MaryBerrysChutney · 13/09/2020 21:45

Metal bin, stood on a drawer liner (Ikea) and line the bottom with newspaper and then the bin liner(costco). Wipe the ouside and inside clean everytime I empty it. Change the newspaper as well, Obviously. I have had my bin for 6 years and it still looks good. No rust.

Fatted · 13/09/2020 21:47

We didn't have one in our old house because of a lack of room in the kitchen. It was OK when it was just DH and I, but a nightmare after the DC arrived.

Now we have a kitchen bin. One of the metal, pedal lid ones. It's looking OK. It has a plastic bucket insert that gets taken out and hosed down every so often. We use cheap liners and never had a problem. I do tend to put anything particularly manky straight into the wheelie bin though and if the kitchen bin gets stinky, the bag goes out in the wheelie bin whether it's full or not.

CorianderLord · 13/09/2020 22:11

Food goes in a food waste bing which I just wash with soap and water.

Main big plastic bin doesn't get mucky as all the food goes in the little bin.

reluctantbrit · 13/09/2020 22:14

We have four. A food waste caddy on the worktop, small crate one for paper under the sink and a pull out with two compartments for recyclying and general rubbish, this one similar to the link TheHighestSardine quoted. The kitchen company who did our kitchen four years ago had it in their range.

All apart from the paper one have bin bags and they are tied when full and brougth out to the respective bins. When emptied we clean them in the bath with hot water and washing up liquid. But in general there is not a lot of dirt as the bags prevent it.

CorianderLord · 13/09/2020 22:17

Ours is the IKEA Gigantisk

notso · 13/09/2020 22:19

Costco sensor bin. It's almost the best bin I've ever had. A plastic simple human one was the best nicer looking but I foolishly got the sensor bit too wet when cleaning and knackered it.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 13/09/2020 22:23

@Sarafive

Plastic, wash it regularly. Bin liner. Lasts indefinitely.
Yup. I have a cheap Addis, swing top one that is at least 15 years old and looks good as new. I wash the lid with hot soapy water every time I change the bag and occasionally wash out the bin with boiling water and beach. It never gets too minging as it's so easy to keep clean.
FelicityFisher · 13/09/2020 22:25

We have a Simple Human one that was very expensive but looks lovely and looks pristine. I wipe it over with a hot cloth and disinfectant every other day

A plastic bin would look rubbish in my kitchen

Pombearbuffet · 13/09/2020 22:25

Plastic bin in the cupboard under the sink with a bin liner. It gets emptied daily. I put a piece of kitchen roll with a splash of bleach in the bottom to soak up any liquid.

RandomUsernameHere · 13/09/2020 22:44

We have a stainless steel brabantia one with a plastic lid. I just wipe it with kitchen spray and kitchen towel. It's about 6 years old and has never rusted.

Furries · 14/09/2020 03:48

Brabantia tall bin. Had it at least 10 years. Gets wiped down with antibacterial wipes, but it doesn’t get that messy.

First few years bought the expensive brabantia 50L bin bags. Now I buy my bags from Aldi - they look exactly the same, but it’s around £2 for a roll of 30 50L bags.
